no but the thing is, when the hero falls in love with the villain she is falling in love with the darkest parts of herself. she is owning her shadow and the owning makes her stronger. it is not about whether a ship is toxic or romanticising abuse because it’s not about two individuals. the struggle is not one between two people, just like the love is not between two people. when the hero falls in love with the villain she is loving herself. when she loves herself she is stronger, better, able to transform darkness instead of running from it. at the moment of loving, a person changes. the loved changes. and the love of the villain changes the hero. it’s all about this, don’t you see?

In one timeline, I bet Viktor and Jayce get their docarates together, graduating hand-in-hand as Doctors Viktor and Jayce Talis PhD.

In another remarkablly similar timeline, Jayce graduates with only a photograph, giving a valedictorian speech through his tears.

I don’t think that Jayce was completely oblivious about Viktor for 7 years. I actually think it’s the opposite.

I think Jayce was quite painfully aware of how Viktor felt about him. Even more aware of how he felt about Viktor. But it’s a twofold problem…

One - It’s possible and entirely likely that Jayce was coming to terms with his sexuality to begin with.

And maybe it was something he really wasn’t sure about because let’s face it …beginning s1 Jayce was so hyperfixated on proving his work was possible that he didn’t have the time or energy to think about his personal feelings or romantic needs, even as he grew up and started looking how he did.

He was still the weird, brilliant kid people didn’t understand, who people ridiculed, who was often left so isolated by the people around him that he was premeditating his own suicide.

He likely hadn’t even considered seriously liking anyone in that way until Viktor literally interrupted his attempt and essentially collided into his life.

Viktor looked at him, believed in him, validated him in an instant in a way no one ever had. There was a feeling he got from Viktor that he never felt with anyone ever again. A feeling of being truly known for the first time.

And it took Jayce awhile, admittedly too long, for him to realize that feeling was love. Jayce is a man who realizes everything too late. It’s just his way. And when Viktor essentially died that was the panic induced wake up call he needed to realize he was not just a work partner to him, he was in love with him. He needed him. He didn’t know life without him.

Two - Jayce was too afraid to let Viktor down by complicating their working partnership with his personal feelings.

Jayce is shown to be expressive, touchy feely, and fairly emotionally open with the people he cares about. Whereas Viktor….he is comparatively far more stoic.

When they start their partnership, Viktor tells Jayce his entire story. Where he came from, what he was working toward his entire life…this work was his dream as much as it was Jayce’s.

For Jayce…how could he open his heart to this man and potentially ruin achieving both their dreams by complicating everything with his big sensitive messy feelings for him? Wouldn’t it be so much easier if he was professional? If he just kept it to himself so that Viktor could have everything he wanted?

Despite Viktor being quite obvious in his own way at showing Jayce he was clearly interested in him, Jayce acts pretty oblivious. But there are so many scenes, so many glances and looks between the two that suggest otherwise. But maybe that’s not because it was purposeful. Maybe that’s because it was easier. Keeping their relationship professional even if it killed them both secretly was the best way Jayce could guarantee he gave Viktor the life he deserved.

Perhaps that was the best way he could figure to repay Viktor for saving his life years ago. To give him the one he had always deserved. Whether Jayce was in it the way he really wanted to be or not.

So I think it’s much less likely that Jayce is oblivious but more that he was trying his best to be selfless. To put his personal, ever-growing and confusing feelings for the man he loved aside to ensure they achieved the dream they sought out to achieve together. That he was too petrified of letting his Viktor down both as a partner in work and in life. And that’s why it was so complicated.
