The Owl House Cookbook Zine FAQ

What is this?

We are putting together a free, digital cookbook fanzine with recipes, fanfic, meta/trivia, and fanart inspired by the food of the Boiling Isles. To honor Luz, Camila, and Manny, we would also like to include Dominican and Puerto Rican cuisine — potentially with a Demon Realm twist. 

We're taking inspiration from cookbook fanzines in other fandoms as well as the fantastic @vee-fanzine (check it out!).

Are there content restrictions?

Contributions must be food-themed and related to The Owl House. The main zine will only accept G or T rated fanworks. We are still deciding on whether to include alcoholic beverages in the main zine, as a separate download, or not at all for this volume.

What roles are there?/How can I contribute?

We'd like 2-5ish mods in total, chefs who can take the lead in developing recipes, recipe testers, people who research food-related trivia from the show, writers to put relevant trivia/meta in blurbs/recipe notes, fanfic writers, beta readers, fan artists, and anyone else who'd like to brainstorm/discuss recipes, bread puns, and other fanzine contributions.

Do I need to apply to contribute?

Mod applications are open through June 22nd since @findmeinthefallair and @zyrafowe-sny would like a couple more people to help run the event.

Starting June 14th, we will have a non-binding interest form we'd like all potential participants to fill out. We do not have a formal application/screening process for contributors. Because this is a digital zine, we don't have to worry about page length and can accept all contributions that meet the guidelines and are submitted by the due date.

When is it being released?

We are aiming for the third anniversary of Thanks to Them (October 15, 2025) and are hoping to release a second volume on the anniversary of Watching and Dreaming (April 8, 2026).

Will there be a print edition?

At this time, we want to keep this zine relatively simple and accessible by only providing a digital download. We're hoping the digital edition can be printable for personal use and are not completely ruling out an organized print run in the future, but the logistics around a print edition are complicated and hard copies/shipping can be pricey.

Vee Week 2025 FAQ

What is this?

Vee Week, or Veek, is a celebration of our favorite basilisk. We're hoping to encourage new fanworks of all kinds!

When is it?/Why those dates?

Veek will take place from Thursday, August 14th to Wednesday, August 20th. Those dates were chosen because Yesterday's Lie (Vee's debut episode) first aired on August 14, 2021. It's also the planned release date for the @vee-fanzine!

That said, it's never "too late" to be inspired or post fanworks. We'll be most actively reblogging tagged posts during actual Veek, so keep that in mind if you decide to post early or late.

Are there prompts?

There will be three to choose from each day and five alternate prompts as well. For each day, you may choose one or more of that day's prompts, or use an alternate prompt. The prompts are shown below:

Are there event graphics?

@lunar-jewels put together the banner and prompt list in this post, along with participation badges! The participation badges will be linked here soon.

What can I make?

You can make or write basically anything: meta, headcanons, haikus, limericks, 100 word drabbles, ficlets, long fics, traditional art, digital art, gifsets, rec lists, cosplay, embroidery, latte art, fanvids, etc. One fanwork can be used to fill multiple prompts. If you have an ongoing WIP and want to incorporate a prompt into a new chapter, that's fine too!

What if I'm not interpreting a prompt correctly?

We are not policing people's interpretations of the prompts. If a prompt inspires you to create, that's fantastic!

Is there an AO3 Collection?

Yes! This will open around August 13, 2025. You can post fanworks there, or add bookmarks to external links (like Tumblr posts with fan art).

Are there any other Vee fandom events?

YES! The @vee-fanzine is accepting contributions from anyone until August 1, 2025 and will release on August 14, 2025.

There is also the @toh-cookbook-zine! While not Vee-specific, you are more than welcome to contribute Vee-centric recipes (edible Hexes Hold'Em cards, anyone?) along with food-related trivia/meta, fanworks, and fanfic. Volume I submissions due by the end of September.

Were you, at any point, a fan of the Vee x Cheerleader pairing?

Before Vee x Masha really became a thing, yeah I would say I shipped it. Luz learning to be a witch and Vee learning to be a human, all the while both of them pick up girlfriends.

So just got into reading your Good Basilisk story and its really good. One interesting thing is how with the characters of Camila and Amity, you chose to change to some things about them and the choices they made, things that caused some to dislike them (Amity wasn't a bully, Camila didnt choose the camp). You already explained why you changed Amity in an author's note, but why in Camila's case. Also how does principal Hal have the power to send Luz to the camp?

Thanks! In Thanks to Them during Camila’s dream sequence we see that she was kinda guilt-tripped into agreeing to send Luz to the camp by a counselor or someone, so something similar definitely could’ve happened in GBL. As for Hal having the authority to force Luz into attending the camp: schools can do mandatory summer school, so the camp probably worked out a deal with the school admins.

Out of curiosity if it isn't much problem, is there anything you could share about your AUs or other ideas? The one about Vee growing up in the human realm really caught my attention but I'm also curious if you are cooking something else

To be honest, I don't really have the brain power to come up with too many ideas for more than one AU. My main story, which I plan on making a fic about eventually, is called Snakes and Mirrors (where Vee gets rescued and ends up in the human realm MUCH earlier, and it's also kind of a swap au with Luz being raised in the Demon realm).

An offshoot I thought of has the older basilisks, Three and Four come with Vee to the human realm. I headcan them being only like, 5-6 years older than vee, and she's a baby at this point. So it's a couple of scared, cold little snake kids being incredibly defensive over their smaller, even more scared baby sister. Then, the three of them get discovered by Camila and Manny Noceda, and after a tense encounter, get adopted real fast.

In the main story, Vee doesn't know she's a demon. She knows she's a reptilian shapeshifter of unknown origin, and she can sniff out and consume strange energy from mystic objects, but that's it. Having siblings that are both able to remember and tell her about the Demon realm (specifically the Emperor's coven) makes her and their new parents terrified of the demon realm, given that those experiments were all the three of them really experienced.

Thirteen years passed, and Vee's older siblings have both finished high school and have begun looking into college/jobs. Vee and Masha find Eda's portal to the demon realm, and shenanigans ensue. They have a lot of assumptions about how terrible the Demon realm is, and in turn, it takes a long time for them to warm up to Eda

I'm not sure how much would change overall for the story, but I think it's an interesting concept.

There was an AU conxept post by LuminousShane about Amity being forced by Odalia into being an oracle, leading to her encountering Evelyn Clawthorne's ghost and she ends up being an actually good parental figure for Amity. I feel like I'd want to make a story exploring that premise just because I don't know if anyone else would make it into a fic. I don't actually have any ideas for it, though, just a thought.

Sorry for taking so long to get to your ask, btw. Idk what took me so long, but I will try to answer some more going forward. I am very inconsistent.
