while we’re talking about mental health, i’ve shared this before but i’ve had 3 white psychologists and all of them and i mean all of them did not take my experiences with racism seriously. it wasn’t until i got to my current psych (who is a woc) that i felt validated in my fears and anxieties. my white psychs felt that my fear surrounding being a black woman was unfounded, ridiculous, and hypersensitive. one of them even suggested that i might have a psychosis that made me believe i was being persecuted. i left after that, but it still made me think to myself, “well maybe i am making it all up. a woman who went through school and is knowledgable said i might be making it up, so maybe i am.” i have no idea how setback i am because of these women, where i would be if i could actually address the experiences i had without feeling like it was fake. people need to know the experiences people of color, especially black people, have in the mental health care system. it can be incredibly demeaning and discouraging to engage in at the best of times and deadly at worst.
