Thursday Check-In Post
As we move into this next module of our big project I have a few questions:
As mentioned, we will be working with lots of data across multiple accounts. I was curious if we should looking at them on the same standard or is that not fair/ accurate to do so? If one is larger with maybe a different form of content, should it not be judged against another? Is it still good to compare or is it not on the same playing field?
Also, what are some tips you have on managing such a large amount of data, making sure there are no errors to get the most accurate read?
Finally, with data-driven writing how do you keep the balance of the facts and your opinion on the analysis? Is there space for that? I’m navigating through bettering how I approach and explain things throughout the analyses.
I’m excited to grow a deeper understanding in this content area as we get more experience!

The data piece that surprised me is also what I am excited to analyze! When recording the data I realized that while views/likes and comments generally correlate, that is not always true. I was surprised that posts with lower impressions actually had a higher number of comments. It seems that it may be in a call to action, intentionally asking for users to get involved. I’m excited to analyze this further to deepen my understanding of what it really means and improve my content.

I love how you shared the adaptations you are making to make your writing data based! I feel like I struggle with putting it into words with my process because it’s so natural and obvious to me, but everyone does things a little different! This post explains it very well and aligns perfectly with web writing!
How I am adapting my writing process
The first step I took was thoroughly breaking down the assignment prompt and identifying the core objectives. By focusing on understanding what data-driven writing is and how it applies to web writing, I made sure to outline the main points that needed to be addressed. This approach helped me clarify my central research question and hypothesis, and it allowed me to structure my thoughts before diving into data analysis. Since the assignment requires using data to support my analysis, I began by revisiting the data I have from my personal Instagram account, focusing on engagement metrics like likes, comments, shares, and overall audience attraction. This helps me focus on specific examples that will support my hypothesis and conclusions. I took the time to reflect on how the data directly relates to my audiences' interactions with my content. For instance, analyzing which types of posts (motivational, personal, or family-related) generate higher engagement has guided my approach in this assignment. I used those observations to make sure the points I’m discussing, like the importance of personal connection in content, are clearly backed by my data. This method ensures that my writing is both relevant and well-supported. Since we are including our data I am already thinking of how and where I want to insert graphs, or charts, and even pictures.

This is such an interesting topic to look into! I’ve also wondered how much hashtag use plays into the performance of a post. It seems to me like that’s what people would always talk about when sharing how to post content. I guess the video or image(s) should be good themselves first, but they does the hashtags really make that much of a difference? I’m enticed to see what you can find on this!
Original Content
how does the data prove/disprove your hypothesis?
My hypothesis for this assignment was whether or not hashtags increased the engagement on posts on the Millersville English and World Language instagram page. After looking the the data, I was able to conclude that while hashtags could increase engagement on posts, it is not the sole reason for posts to have high engagement. The type of content that is posted seems to have a more deciding factor on how much likes a post gets rather then the type of hashtags a post uses.

This is so true! I also wrote a similar post since I am an Early Education student as well. Our teachers have really said that it is so important to back up all our decisions of the data. The points you brought up will be very applicable as we go into our career!
Original Post #3 (Week 4)
Explain how data-driven writing will help you in your post-undergrad life
My major is elementary education, so data-driven writing will help me figure out students accommodations. With data, I can see if students need to be challenged more or if students need to be accommodated to fit their needs. Additionally, the data can be shown to administrators to receive resources and support. Lastly, data can be shown to parents for progress reports or and evidence-based updates. Overall, it will be important to have data-driven writing in my post-undergrad life!

Thursday Check-In Post
For me it takes a long time to piece things together, so it has been a struggle to keep up. I fully care about what I am working on but need to find a way to balance it with time and being more efficient. It feels overwhelming trying to figure out what is coming with the next step.
With this being a peer review week, I am a bit confused on what that looks like on here and Dr. P saying she is very particular on this assignment, I’m not sure how to tackle this the right away. I’m having a hard time putting my thoughts into words that sound professional for this course. I’m still not sure what the expectations are with the peer review exactly, but need to figure out how to execute it all. Getting specific with peers responses will be super helpful!
Do you have any suggestions for good “buzz words” that may come up in our analysis of social media that’s not already in our key terms?
Overall, I still need to put together all the parts on my end to then work on the reviewing process. I’m sure more specific questions will come up soon and will have very different thoughts come the next check-in.

Data-driven writing will be so so helpful in post undergrad life in my career! Over the past year in my Early Education classes I have learned just how important it is to use data.
As a teacher, we provide kids with different levels of support based off of what they need. There is a process when referring a student to a special needs program and getting an IEP. In order to do this you have to provide data! Through different types of assessment we can see what the child knows, what works well for them, and the struggle points. This data has to be collected before moving onto the next level. We should be making our decisions based off of that when writing referrals. When you provide that, it covers you because there is evidence/ proof of what has been done and where the student is at.

I want to look into how my data is comparing with my hypothesis. My prediction is that the most engaged with content is what provides value to the audience through interests, learning new information, or relatable videos by using key words and aesthetic appeal.
It seems my shopping type videos perform pretty well with views and engagement. People are being provided with items they could buy. Also there are key words such as Valentine’s day which was an upcoming holiday, also names of stores such as Target and Ross. I am displaying those words on both the cover and in the caption. This does prove my hypothesis, going along with that thinking. Also, using the sounds that are trending in a video, generally gave higher numbers.
However, there was some videos that have lower likes and views but generally had more comments than the others! If it’s more tailored towards asking people’s opinions you will reach the audience to engage.
I think the fun part of TikTok though is sometimes it’s not always 100% one type of video that gets high engagement, there’s some unexpected curveballs in there!

What trends am I seeing as I collect the data?
Well first, it is more difficult than I thought to really define a certain trend and what that actually looks like/ would be called.
I am collecting data from my personal TikTok account and here is what I’m seeing:
- likes generally are around 20-60
- comments, shares and saves are all consistently low (ranging from 0-6)
- views typically sit around 500
- shopping type videos have better performance
I’m excited as we dive in more to see what this means for my content.

Thursday Check-In Post

I’m still in the process of figuring things out but I think I will have many questions after the analysis. There is still so much it seems hard to put words too.
I was wondering about the creator data. When collecting data from my own videos, I am able to see more analytics. Is that allowed to factor in or no because it’s not public?
Also, with data driven web writing are there specific things we need to avoid or any bad experiences you have had with it?

Patterns tend to be found when studying a social media space. As we collect data, I’m expecting for a few patterns to emerge.
Typically I get around the same number of views pretty consistently so I don’t think there will be a drastic difference between all posts. I expect the posts following a trend to perform better because that is what the algorithm is pushing out to others. Also, I expect there to be a pattern of lower likes and comments. In my hypothesis I also mentioned there that posts with high quality videos and displayed keywords will perform well. I’m interested in seeing what patterns will arise as I complete this project and what can be analyzed from that data.

For the Data Collection Practice Assignment I am choosing to collect my data on Google Sheets. This platform I am most familiar with because of club involvement so it will be the best way for me to record everything. It makes it easy to keep everything organized and provides tools such as charts.
I am using my personal TikTok to collect data on because there are plenty of posts to choose from, as well as having the most easily accessible data. I am being sure to collect all data at the same time so there is no factor of time and changes of numbers across the posts. I am very interested to see what the collected data will show me about the audience and my content.

Over the course of my education, I have been trying my best to develop strategies for completing assignments. When tackling a longer project it’s important to break it up to have less stress. Splitting it into smaller tasks makes it become more manageable and less overwhelming. When I write out a checklist it makes me feel more organized and accomplished when I can check things off. So, I have been trying my best to create a schedule where I can plan time to do each part throughout the week.
Other strategies with assignments include setting up a workable environment. Have a desk space, eliminate distractions, play soft instrumental music, have some sort of candy or drink, whatever works best for you. I try to take some breaks and prioritize the work. Occasionally I will ask for an outside perspective from my friends.
These are all the pieces I try to factor in to get large assignments done and would love to hear if anyone else has useful strategies!

It’s super cool how you chose to collect your data from your personal TikTok account. I also enjoy posting lifestyle content on my TikTok account so I can relate to your post. It is interesting to see which posts get more views and why. I will be interested to see how the project turns out and what we learn through it!
Content Writing 3
I am collecting data from my personal Tiktok account for this assignment. I post videos under specific topics that bring me joy like makeup, reading, hauls, funny videos with my friends etc. I think I will notice patterns in the data because I notice patterns in the interactions on my profile already. Any book videos i’ve posted always have less views and likes then let’s say a video of me and my friends dressed up for the night. I’m excited to look more into the changes in data from post to post.

I think that’s a very smart idea to set deadlines for yourself. I tend to get overwhelmed seeing a huge project that is due but breaking it up into smaller portions and sticking to those goals is something that I should start practicing more. I’m working towards building more strategies for success!
Original Content Post 2
When tackling a longer project there are a few strategies I practice to be successful in the assignment. I typically set deadlines for myself for small parts of the project so completing the entire project is more manageable. I write these deadlines in my planner to encourage me to stay consistent in meeting them. A mistake that can be made when making deadlines is not being flexible. Sometimes things can take longer or shorter than expected. When hurdles or changes arise, it is important to be flexible in the plan. It is also vital to stay organized keeping all project elements together in a folder. This way if you have to make changes to your plan everything is easy to navigate. It will also make your life much simpler when it comes time to submit all elements of the assignment.

I like how you chose to document the data from the latest to earliest post. This allows you to get more accurate data results. I plan to use google sheets as well since I am more familiar with that platform. I am looking forward to seeing how it develops as we go forward.

How I am collecting data...
I am collecting data from the English and World Language Instagram page. I am using Google Sheets and I created different columns for the information. I went on the Instagram page and started with the first post from 2 months ago. I documented the data from the latest to the earliest posted. I am doing it this way to see if the timing of the post impacts the interaction of the audience. 2 months ago was around fall graduation and went into the start of this semester. It will allow me to see if there is more engagement at the end of the semester or the beginning. I chose to use Google Sheets because that is what I am most familiar with.

Thursday Check-In Post

There are many key concepts throughout the course that we will get to unpack as we go. But after the readings and where we are at now, there are some that are still a bit fuzzy on what that actually looks like. Terms that are new to me are information architecture and discourse community, as well as the effects of that on user experience.
Are you able to provide examples of what effective use of information architecture looks like in large well known companies/platforms? Also, can that be adapted easily and how? Finally, are there any tools or methods you have found to be the best for analyzing these things?
I’m looking forward to putting these all into play throughout our web writing experience!
