The walls sweat a yellowish tint stained from decades of cigarette smoke and cheap bourbon breath. No renovations since the summer of ’87. The paint peels in long curling strips like dead skin and the ceiling fans cough instead of spin.

Back in the early ’70s this place was a clean familiar stop, a decent roadside joint where truckers and families could eat a hot meal, no roaches in sight, no powder behind the toilets. Coffee refills were free and folks knew your name.

Now the neon out front sputters half dead the E and L in MOTEL barely holding on. The carpets reek of mildew, piss and old carpet glue, long since given up on pretending. Cigarette burns dot the furniture like constellations mapped out by addicts killing time between hits.

A couple of junkies nod off in the corner, needles still dangling from limp hands, plastic motel chairs creaking beneath them. Someone’s TV blares a late night infomercial no one’s watching.

The American Dream sleeps here now too on its side, face down, overdosed in a pay by the hour room with stained curtains drawn.

Outside rain mixes with oil in the parking lot making little rainbow puddles no one notices. The ice machine’s broken, the vending machine hums like it knows a secret and somewhere upstairs, a couple fights quietly through the walls, careful not to wake the kids they forgot how to raise.
