#Repost @vrye with @get_repost ・・・ it is laughable that we would should believe anything the US empire says - which was built and maintained by the most barbaric and abhorrent violence the world has ever seen - as they demonize cuba. the constant attacks by politicians and corporate media (also seen against china) show how desperate the imperialists are to maintain their credibility in the midst of a crumbling capitalist economy. they want us to believe capitalism is irreversible and permanent, that we have no other option. but cuba has proven the many successes of socialism and the ability for poor working class people to organize and take up arms to successfully overthrow the oppressors, and then continue to defend their revolution for decades in a small island country just 90 miles from empire, in the face of a brutal embargo & continued attacks (fidel survived over 600 assassination attempts). . cuba is ranked the most sustainably developed country in the world. life expectancy in cuba is 78.05 years old (in comparison to US which is 78.62 years and now declining). homelessness in cuba is near 0% (vs 17% in the US). cuba has 99.75% literacy rate. more than 80% of cubans own their homes. cuba has 1.7% unemployment rate. everyone is guranteed food, housing, and healthcare. cuban socialism is highly effective direct democracy where voter turnout is over 90% (vs 50% in US). cubans, with or without party affiliation, nominate and vote directly for over 12,000 delegates to the 168 municipal assemblies in highly participatory local processes. cuba has a lung cancer vaccine. cuba is the first country in the world to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV. people in the U.S. are 15 times more likely to die in a hurricane compared to cuban residents. cuba has the best doctors in the world, and has sent them to assist countries all throughout the world. cuba has also sent people to fight / support liberation struggles, particularly in Angola against apartheid South Africa. and this has all been achieved under a brutal / crippling embargo imposed by the U.S. that has made cuba’s achievements even more remarkable. they have taught us a better world is possible if — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/32s9xWp

#Repost @vrye with @get_repost ・・・ “Most societies in the West are not opposed to violence. The oppressor is only opposed to violence when the oppressed talk about using violence against the oppressor. . .The way the oppressor tries to stop the oppressed from using violence as a means to attain liberation is to raise ethical or moral questions about violence. I want to state emphatically here that violence in any society is neither moral nor is it ethical. It is neither right nor is it wrong. It is just simply a question of who has the power to legalize violence. . It is not a question of whether it is right to kill or it is wrong to kill; killing goes on. Let me give an example. If I were in Vietnam, if I killed 30 yellow people who were pointed out to me by white Americans as my enemy, I would be given a medal. I would become a hero. I would have killed America’s enemy—but America’s enemy is not my enemy. If I were to kill 30 white policemen in Washington, D.C. who have been brutalizing my people and who are my enemy, I would get the electric chair. It is simply a question of who has the power to legalize violence. In Vietnam our violence is legalized by white America. In Washington, D.C., my violence is not legalized, because Africans living in Washington, D.C., do not have the power to legalize their violence. . I used that example only to point out that the oppressor never really puts an ethical or moral judgment on violence, except when the oppressed picks up guns against the oppressor. For the oppressor, violence is simply the expedient thing to do. . Is it not violent for a child to go to bed hungry in the richest country in the world? I think that is violent. But that type of violence is so institutionalized that it becomes a part of our way of life. Not only do we accept poverty, we even find it normal. And that again is because the oppressor makes his violence a part of the functioning society. But the violence of the oppressed becomes disruptive. It is disruptive to the ruling circles of a given society. And because it is disruptive it is therefore very easy to recognize, and therefore it becomes the target of all those who in fact do not want to cha — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/3bxAMTs

#Repost @ibramxk with @get_repost ・・・ On this #mlkday honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., millions of Democrats are deciding whether to vote for a White progressive or a White moderate in the Democratic primaries. Americans love to impose their ideas onto King as opposed to listening and learning from King's ideas and changing accordingly. And so, on this day, I thought we'd remember what King actually wrote about the White moderate in his letter from a Birmingham jail in 1963. “I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action’: who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a ‘more convenient season.’ Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection." — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/37arr1v
