i'm gonna be honest here and say that It baffles me that Mickey 17 didn’t land well with audiences...I literally don't get it. we always complain about hollywood being obsessed with sequels reboots and superhero fatigue and yet, when we get an original sci fi movie, it suddenly gets a lukewarm reception?!?! idk what went wrong but i'd rather have an ambitious and genuine sci-fi movie that takes risks than another generic blockbuster. who's with me

Personally I hope that no one begins to do a disservice to Haruka's characterization by fixating on one singular thing.
Such as the murder, parental neglect, the possible diagnoses and mental health struggles he had etc. Because fixating on that is no different than what his parents did. Fixating on the label of the issue more than the person with it. Doing this ignores that Haruka as a character was someone committed to changing for the better. So for once in his life he could do something to benefit the people in his life who he cared about and were there for him.
He constantly worked in order to not be a disappointment and died trying his best to repent and at least be useful to one person before he left this world. Regardless of if he was being used or not. He recognized that what he did was wrong. The report illustrates this again and again.
It highlights how he was tormented by his own actions,
Haruka weeps, as he clumsily hides the body, "This child's life was probably much more valuable than my own." "A future much brighter than mine was probably awaiting this child." "Why did I end up like this?" Haruka cried, night after night after that, and repented. He thinks about the future of the child he murdered, and claws at his chest. When he comes to, he was strangling the neck of a second child.
It showcases how he wasn't fully cognizant that he was repeating this pattern with the second child and his music videos display that as well. Going further to imply by not labeling this as a murder that once he recognizes what he was doing he stops himself.
Something alluded to in the series by the fact that Haruka states he's afraid to be near children. A fear more than likely brought about by the fact he did this with no awareness of it.
Haruka's First Voice Drama 4:25s
"A-Amane." What's wrong? "I-I'm not good with them. Children at that age. A-Amane is a good girl but she brings back b-bad memories." Are you alright? You're looking pale, you know?
That he warns people not to get close to him because bad things happen to those that get close to him,
Haruka's First Voice Drama 4:44s
"I shouldn't be too i-involved with people in the first place. Even with all the prisoners they might misunderstand. It's no good." Why is that? Just do as you please. The bonds we share with other people are the very thing that shows our human nature, that's what I believe. "It's something I can't even tell you, prison guard!" Even to me? "You shouldn't get so close to me. Bringing misfortune to people is the only thing I'm naturally good at."
The only thing I'm naturally good at./When he comes to, he was strangling the neck of a second child.
Haruka's First Voice Drama 5:15s
"The more you know about me, I'm sure I'll bring misfortune onto you as well, prison guard." Haruka. "Because! Because... Ah, I'm sorry... for just talking by myself." Continue. "It's happen sometimes. I... I... Even though I try to be normal, everything gets ruined. You, everyone, if you knew me... If you knew everything that I did... I'm gonna be abandoned, that's bound to happen."
Because I'm a selfish killer.
Doing that would ignore that Haruka consistently did things within Milgram to try to mitigate and work on the issues he's constantly faced throughout his life.
Focusing on just one thing ignores everything we saw Haruka's character try to do over the years that he was in Milgram as well as everything that has transpired as Milgram has gone on.
Something that he died continuing to attempt to do.
It ignores the fact that Haruka didn't think his actions or the murder were right. It ignores the fact that he came here admitting fully he was wrong and was told actually no you're wrong about being wrong what you did here was okay.
Haruka Metamorphosis of the Weak 2:30s
"It is. I felt uneasy about it this whole time... Someone as worthless as me having killed someone to gain attention, and a person who surely had more worth and more of a future than me, at that..." ... "But it turns out that I did nothing wrong after all! It wasn't wrong of me to kill her. There was never anything for me to worry about...!" Oh...? "It felt so strange warden...! Warden-san, you forgave me so, so much, it felt like a whole lot of people had accepted me! Ahh... It was the first time I've ever felt something like that!"
To reduce all of that characterization down to mental health struggles, neglect, or one single issue at all is to miss what makes Haruka a great character entirely.
He is all of his flaws and successes.
Yet beyond all that in his dying moments he was someone who was trying his best to do right by someone and prove to the people that gave up on him that he wasn't a failure and he could be useful. He was a character that died crying out for a mother who abandoned him saying,
"I changed……I'm……useful now……Mommy."
Tumblr media
Even if the only way he could be costed him his life.
Still none of that negates the fact that he was and will always be a murderer. That he cut a child's life short. All of those things can be true at once.
Because for a character to come off as human for them to be compelling is to hold space for the fact that like people they will be flawed, they will be pitiable, they will be undeniably wrong in some areas and justified in others and they won't exist forever.
People will grow to like or hate them in equal measure and find reasons to justify those feelings just like with any person in real life. Yet at the end of the day beyond like and dislike, hate and ok- There's a complicated characterization there waiting to be appreciated for everything it is not just what's easy to enjoy or dislike about it.

I recently had the joy of watching Mickey 17, and as someone with an unintentional interest in clone concepts - as a result of hypmic, alien stage, etc - it got the cogs turning in my brain. I'm a sucker for a crossover au, and believe there is ounces of potential for a hypnosis mic x mickey 17 concept; Ramuda....Mickey Barnes....you get the idea. p.s. the movie is defo worth the watch...

I saw another user on Twitter (moonlight_syndr) note that there is usually a month-long grace period in between Milgram trial songs, as seen in the last two rotations, yet Yuno is scheduled for June. So there may just be hope for a Haruka trial 3 song alongside his report...? some are saying this is a stretch purely because Milgram is unpredictable as is but... Haruka fans, let's all hold hands. I highly recommend checking out their thread on this as it also goes into the possible scheduling for Mahiru and Shidou if this is to be true! what do you guys think?

Back with a third interpretation, but in reblog style as it fits nicely into the narrative we have going in this post. A user on twitter (kindnapkin) noted the possibility that Haruka is viewing himself as a child during the first crime, hence the imagery of a younger him hand in hand with the girl in Trial 1. This does have some clarity, taking into consideration that Haruka has stated he is unsure of his exact age. Again, would love to hear what others think of the interpretation...
Haruka Sakurai 'Trial 3' Observations Pt.2
I have seen some interesting interpretations on who the second child mentioned in the report could possibly be, with a heavy leaning towards it being Haruka himself. This theory is really interesting, considering we are aware of his suicidal attempts through the trial 2 MV. Furthermore, the deliberate imagery of younger Haruka enjoying the festival with his first victim elevates the imagery of an afterlife/dream, in which they are both alive. It raises the idea that Haruka strangling his younger self in trial 1 is more literal than my first theory of visionary punishment; he is visualising himself harming or killing himself, rather than it being a stand in for a third party, or literal 'second child'. As many have pointed out, this would make sense with the deliberate vagueness of the second victim in the report, and further bolsters the idea that Milgram is a purgatory between life and death - perhaps Haruka was already dead before arriving there? Lots of theory's swimming around at the moment, I'm trying to map out all of my varying interpretations here before brushing them up into a chronological account, but....who knows when that may be. I would love to hear what others think!

genuine chills over the buildup of harukas death and his dead body and how BAD the effects of his self inflicted starvation malnourishment actually were, starting with the exposed ankle bones and building up to his lifeless face. i dont think a media has made me feel like this in a really long time, actually breath taking in the worst way possible

Finally getting Haruka's report has really put into perspective just how many things he has been let down by in his life: The education system, the medical system, his parents, the police, and now us. He really did not get a break until the very end.

MILGRAM SPOILERS
Tumblr media
Seeing people's reactions to this part made me think, is the second child really a literal, new person we haven't met before? I don't think so.
At first I thought the young Haruka being strangled in his first MV was a metaphor and/or a stand-in for the girl with braided hair we see during the second trial, but her death is indeed shown as a separate one from young Haruka's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(note the straight bangs vs. spiky hair) The siblings theory seems to be denied by the final report, since everything's now in the open, I feel like it would've specified if they had a deeper relationship instead of calling Haruka's victims just "a child".
Tumblr media
But we see young Haruka and the girl holding hands. What do they have in common then, if they didn't know each other and hadn't met before? Perhaps it's meant to symbolize how Haruka led her away from her parents to commit the murder... ...But maybe they're shown together because they both died at Haruka's hands. Could it be that the second child was himself? "Claws at his chest" makes me think that what followed were his hands rising to his own neck and that he tried or maybe managed to commit suicide.
Tumblr media
If we take into account the mismatched dates (if Haruka was born during 1997 and Milgram began in 2020, then he wouldn't be 17 years old) and this especific sentence at the end of the report (Dawn of the following day to MILGRAM? You mean the day after Milgram?) then we can only conclude that Haruka was brought into Milgram at a specific time frame after his murder, or in this case, his own death. So, is every prisoner brought into Milgram at different moments in time, perhaps after their own deaths? Does this point towards the afterlife/purgatory theory as presented in the novels? (Just wanting to mention, I haven't read the novels so I'm saying this based on other's comments about it. I myself am not entirely sure if I believe/agree with the Purgatory theory or if I would even like if it were true, but I want to see other's opinions on it!)

Prisoner No.001: Haruka Sakurai Spoilers
Tumblr media
Born in 1997, in Nagaoka, Niigata.
Tumblr media
From an early age, Haruka Sakurai developed more slowly compared to his peers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His overprotective parents would not accept that their child had devlopmental delays, and did not provide him with an educational environment suited to his needs. The gap in developmental achievements between him and his peers kept widening, so much so that when Haruka reached 15 years old, he could still not adequately read kanji.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was around that time his parents simply gave up, and they shift from overprotectiveness to disinterest. From then forth, his parents acted as if Haruka did not exist.
Tumblr media
Haruka tried to regain his parent's attention by causing problems and disturbances, but his parents' attention was never directed at him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Haruka starts to kill small animals in secret from around that time. He killed insects, he killed mice, he killed stray cats and dogs. He felt relieved that there was life in this world that was inferior to him. Haruka 's actions soon escalate, and he starts to kill pet cats and dogs as well. The following day, as he witnessed the tormented screams of the people who had suddenly lost a life they so cherished, he has a deep emotional reaction where he feels for the very first time he is indeed connected to the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The neighborhood increased its security soon afterward, and Haruka 's unsophisticated crimes soon came to light. The police detained and questioned him harshly. Haruka experiences a heightened sense of excitement with all of this interest and attention directed at himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he saw the faces of his parents, who were called in for him and him alone, that heightened excitement reached a fever pitch, and he fainted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The day he was released, Haruka commited murder. The victim was a small child, clearly much less powerful than himself. It was the day of the fireworks festival. He targeted a child who had strayed from her parents.
Tumblr media
Haruka weeps, as he clumsily hides the body. "This child's life was probably so much more valuable than my own" "A future much brighter than mine was probably awaiting this child" "Why did I end up like this?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Haruka cried, night after night after that, and repented. He thinks the future of the child he murdered, and claws at his chest. When he came to, he was strangling the neck of a second child.

Haruka Sakurai 'Trial 3' Observations
With the release of Haruka's third and final trial today, we can finally piece together the details of his life and crime, so here are some of my own observations from a select few frames in comparison to his report. The frame displayed below suggests that he may be experiencing a psychotic episode or frequent dreams post-killing of the girl at the festival. Haruka feels an overwhelming sense of guilt, combined with “the heightened excitement” he is said to have in response to the reactions to his killings; he imagines a life in which he was friends with the girl rather than the one to kill her, suggested when his report states 'he thinks about the future of the child he murdered.' This is a visual representation of said future, in which she enjoys the festival with friends - supported by the firework-like imagery displayed in the background of the frame. All of this is further affirmed when this sequence is interrupted by him strangling 'his younger self', which the report confirms as a potential second victim, yet due to his state of mind, Haruka views it as punishing himself. It can be guessed that the episode displayed in his first trial took place between the murder or the first child and the incident with the second. Whether he went on to kill this child - we do not know, but the time in between the two cases is represented in the MV through dream-like visions of younger, happier Haruka. He wishes for a life where he is friends with those who fall victim, and his mother cares for him rather than neglecting him, forcing him to turn to taking the lives of the innocent rather than peacefully existing within them.
“Why did I end up like this"
"Haruka cried, night after night after that, and repented."
