SFTH MURDER MYSTERY - PART 24 [HELTER POV]

The silence was deafening, Ethel wasn't even making any noise. All four of them just stared over the edge, watching any sign of life drain from Rumpled's eyes.

Helter felt his breathing quicken, but he forced it to regulate when he heard chocked sobs from beside him. Tears begun to fall from Margaery's face. John had already begun to pull her away by an arm, so Helter took the other.

The two dragged her to the desk chair, and sat her down on it. She didn't look fully in the moment, her eyes weren't focused on anything and she was shaking. She'd done so much for them, trying to stop everyone from dying and finding a way out. She needed a break.

Helter almost groaned when he heard the tell-tale noise of a computer booting up. He just wanted Margaery to have one moment where nothing happened and she didn't have to be the hero. Margaery didn't seem to have processed the sound, so maybe she would have a break.

The monitor booted up, revealing a still of Bruce Wayne, dressed up in a suit and tie and sat in the same chair Margaery currently was. John leaned over and whispered into Helter's ear, “I didn't know that computers were also a type of sorcery.”

Before Helter could answer, Bruce Wayne did, “they aren't, it's just fancy technology that will be invented roughly fifty years after your time.”

The still, evidently, wasn't a still. Helter had to take a moment to process, because Bruce Wayne was dead and he was speaking at them, “what.”

John, once again, whispered into his ear, “it talks.”

“Hello, Brucie!” Ethel practically screamed, it hurt Helter's ears, “I haven't seen you since you put me in Arkham all those years ago. It's nice to see you again!”

“It's nice to see you too, Ethel,” Bruce replied, “and, I understand you're confusion, Mr Skelter. Dinnae worry, I am still dead, in your current time at least. This isn't a call, it's just a video.”

“Right-”

“Let me explain,” Wayne sighed, cutting Helter off, “as you already know, I was.. aware of my untimely demise. That's thanks to my good friend André Beetroot, who brought you here, Mr McAllister. I had the unfortune of watching it, alongside the deaths of my own surrogate father, my son and then all the guests, minus Tarquin's.”

“How did you-”

“André showed me the security footage from the cameras I have hidden all around the manor-”

“Excuse me?”

“In every room but the bathrooms of course, I'm not a freak. That's why I didn't see Tarquin's death. Anyway, I saw the footage of the deaths, hence why I knew when to schedule the lights to turn off and how long they remaind off for. I'm also watching the Batcave footage currently, so I can keep up with what you're saying and give you any answers you need.”

“You helped them kill people?” John asked.

“Yes, I have.. regrets about that,” Wayne had the audacity to look genuinely guilty, “but I needed to, for the sake of the timeline.”

“What on earth is that supposed to mean?” Helter had to physically restain himself from throwing one of those stupid bat-a-whatever-the-fucks into the screen.

“And if you knew about all the murders,” John's voice lost confidence as he spoke, he curled in on himself, “why did you bring us all here?”

Wayne sighed again, “the event I invited you all to is trapped in a time loop-”

“Does that mean that everyone who dies comes back?” John's eyes widened.

Wayne shut him down immediately, “no, unfortunately. It means that certain events must happen, or the timeline is fucked. And it all starts with your ‘friend’, Rumpled.”

“I wouldn't call him our 'friend,'” Helter crossed his arms.

“That's.. fair,” Wayne shrugged, “but the loop started when André, an André that wasnae aware of the loop yet, genuinely messed up and caused him to get to the event ten days prior.”

“That's when you died.. or will die?” John raised his hand to his forehead, “I've got a headache.”

“Correct. Margaery knew him before coming here, and Rumpled disappeared. If he never did-”

“I would have never moved to Devon,” Margaery said, absentmindedly.

“And she would have never met the farmers” Wayne finished, “the loop is a fixed point in time, everyone here had to die or the universe might have ended. André says it did once, and it was not pretty. Though, not everything is fixed - in certain goes somebody else would have picked up the phone, or Margaery would have looked at the emails instead of the notes.”

“But,” John's voice was barely above a whisper now, “if André was the strange man in the strange hat that brought me here.. he didn't seem too.. concerned about all of this.”

“That's because André is a being outside of time,” Wayne explained, “the André that brought you here wasnae aware of the loop, much like the one that brought Rumpled here.”

“I think I understand..” Helter's hand was resting on his chin.

“Good, because there's only a few minutes until midnight,” Wayne said, “but.. one more thing before the exits open.”

A newspaper article appeared on the scream, the headline read ‘WAYNE MANOR FIRE - ELEVEN UNIDENTIFIABLE BODIES FOUND’.

“The building is supposed to burn down by morning,” Wayne shrugged, “do with that what you will. The shutters will go up at midnight,” there was a brief pause, “I'm sorry, for everything.”

The video ended, and the large monitor turned off. Helter stared at their reflection in the screen; Helter and John were stood up, looking quite disheveled. Ethel had draped herself over Margaery's knee, and Margaery herself was still in that trance like state.

Even from hundreds of feet below ground, Helter could hear the Tolbooth Steeple strike twelve.
