I think a lot of art and writing advice channels out there on Youtube technically give good advice, but a large portion of the audience seeking out these videos are people who are just getting into art, and it turns into pretty bad advice in that context.

"Make other projects first before jumping into your dream project" Well every idea I got when I was a tween felt like my dream project, so being worried that they'd be bad meant that I made none of them.

"Kill your darlings" I mean if you're making a feature film or AAA game then sure I suppose, but making some silly crap that ends up not furthering the plot is the most fun thing for someone making their first project.

There's a lot of story development mileage you can get out of "how do I make this contrivance I put in to make the plot work something more natural". For me 90% of it is realizing that's what the villain is usually for.
