Type Map for When the Tides Held the Moon by Vanessa Vida Kelley

I would never claim to be able to draw Río as beautifully as the author/artist themself, but he is so soulful and striking that I wanted to create a portrait that’s all flowy watery vibes. Río is surrounded by my favorite words and quotes from this book (there are too many to choose from!) No wonder Benny is so smitten 🥰

One of my favorite details in The Bone Season books is the use of floriography: the meaning of flowers from Victorian times. So I thought I'd combine these in a post. :-)

April Reads 🖤

So many amazing books this month! I’ve been reading a lot of 5 Star books lately and I’ve been lucky to get advanced copies from some of my favorite authors!

I loved WHEN THE TIDES HELD THE MOON so much that I had to feature Vanessa Kelley's gorgeous pre-order incentive artwork of their 2 MCs Benny & Rio for this post. This book is magical and I would recommend it to anyone who loves historical romance.

Since SWEET OBSESSION is Book 8 of a 10 book series I wasn’t sure if I would like it? I didn’t love 6 & 7 as much as some of the earlier books. Surprisingly it’s Katee’s first M|M romance and I really loved it! Poseidon & Icarus are sweet together. And it sucked me right back into the series for the highly anticipated Book 9 coming out later this year.

SAY YOU’LL REMEMBER ME and DONUT SUMMER are both fantastic. I think the new Abby Jimenez may be my favorite of hers out of the 5 I’ve now read? Such incredible chemistry and funny banter. And the upcoming Anita Kelly is a must read if you like their other books. I can’t wait to read it again.

But the highlight of April had to be getting approved for the ONCE A VILLAIN Arc which I gobbled up after rereading NEVER A HERO. I really didn’t want it to be over because I love this world so much. There are SO MANY surprises, twists and turns it’s a wild ride. She really nailed the ending!

Paige is eating a margherita pizza for the first time, and Arcturus speaks gloss to a stray cat who falls in love with him! It's so cute!!

March Reads 💕

I loved Oathbound so much, the next installment in the Legendborn Trilogy. Easily a 5-star read for me. It was such an incredible ride with the wildest ending that the only thing I could do was to immerse myself in a steamy romance bubble.

From Sierra Simone's back catalogue I read the entire Markham Hall and London Lovers series. If you like historical romance with some kink and compelling characters, you'll like these!

I also decided to reread the Thornchapel series since I am helping Sierra’s team promote the new releases. I absolutely love this series. It's mysterious, angsty and naughty and very wild. But in the best way.

This month was all about waiting for The Dark Mirror and I loved it so much. But there were a few others that I really liked including Scythe & Sparrow, Sinner and Deep End.

Review : The Dark Mirror by Samantha Shannon

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars

Wowza. After waiting for 4 whole years for this next installment after the most devastating cliffhanger in The Mask Falling, I am blown away, relieved and just so happy. I gobbled it up in 24 hours and it was everything I wanted and so much more. Completely worth the wait and I absolutely loved it. 🥰

This book had so many questions answered, heists, some angst, friend reunions, villain reunions, incredible battles and the most romantic moments we’ve all been dying for, surrounded by a backdrop of Prague, the Alps, Venice and Rome. I’m not going to spoil anything in here, but this book felt a bit calmer (just slightly) and makes a great "bridge book" before the final two. Paige grows and learns to slow down and accept help for a change! The stakes have changed, the players have realigned and Paige and Arcturus are at the center of it all with their special Golden Cord connection, learning from each other and growing together. It’s just delicious. And it's also very funny!! Maria and Paige have the most hilarious and iconic lines.

If you haven’t read this dystopian urban fantasy series yet I can’t recommend it enough. I started reading The Bone Season in 2013 when it first came out and this is my all-time favorite. Where some fantasy series are as satisfying as eating a bag of candy in one sitting, this series is like eating a 5-course meal in a Michelin-star restaurant where every bit is meant to be savoured. Shannon’s writing style–the prose–is so gorgeous, creative and well-researched, I have about 220 perfectly written sentences and paragraphs in this book alone! Her world building is like no one else’s and it continues to grow along with the incredible character development and arcs. I don’t know how she spins her magic, but she is so talented!

Feel free to squee at me if you've finished The Dark Mirror. It was sooo gooood!

Review : Scythe & Sparrow by Brynne Weaver

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars

What is the likelihood of 3 killer brothers falling for 3 murdery women you say? Probably slim. 😉 But I say to just roll with it cuz it’s deliciously dark and it somehow works.🖤

I really liked this one to round out the series and if you liked the first 2 books, you will like this one. The Kane brothers are endlessly fascinating and are all so different from each other, yet so similarly wired from their shared experience when they were young. Rose, Lark and Sloane are lethal and alluring and also fascinating. The combo of all 6? A killer found family in a dark and edgy world.

I loved Butcher & Blackbird because I love Rowan and Sloane's dynamic, but this one featuring Fionn and Rose was the softest and sweetest of the three stories. Yes, there's murder and dark desires, but it's the most romantic. They're relationship is more subtle, a slow burn, and very sweet especially when Fionn starts writing letters. The most romantic letters you could ever read. I think they even made me weep at one point.

I will say that I had a couple of issues with plot points that were kind of brushed off, but as a whole I loved how the story wraps up and the cameos from everyone else make this book so good. There are scenes that you've read before now told from Fionn's POV and it's wild to get the other side of the experience. It was clever and my favorite part of the story.

Although I didn't do this myself, I think this book would benefit from a reread of Butcher & Blackbird and Leather & Lark first. I'll definitely be binge-reading this series again soon.
