Is Peter Pettigrew dead?
Yes, Petter Pettigrew is currently dead. However, if you are desperate to play him, please let us know. The nice thing about an AU like this: there’s always the potential of … however…
We have been drafting some marauders era characters but, as of yet, have not had the time to post them.

So did Grindewald defeat Dumbledore in 1945 in this AU then? Is Dumbledore still alive? If so, where is he?
Actually, we’re going with the idea that they never had the duel at all – which is why Grindewald could get out of hand the way he did, shattering the Statute of Secrecy and alerting the Muggles to the existence of magic with his big battle over London.
Most likely Grindewald is dead, but I suppose he could be in hiding…
Dumbledore too is most likely dead (“1949: Final bombardment of Hogwarts. Last known sighting of Albus Dumbledore”) but we’re certainly open to playing around with his fate if people have ideas they would like to try!

What is the situation with house elves in AU? Are they still around?
That is something that honestly, neither of us have thought about! (Shh don’t tell Hermione lol.) So if you’ve got something in mind you would like to do, odds are good that we will get behind it! Please don’t hesitate to share!
In the meantime, here are the thoughts we’ve pulled together on house-elves:
Most likely scenario is that, yes, they are still around – because even if the government had wanted to exterminate them, could they have pulled it off? Unlikely. But they aren’t going to be utilized by any loyal, good families (e.g. the Weasleys). Anyone who’s trying to appeal to Muggle sensibilities, for whatever reason – genuine assimilation or camouflage/safety – will eschew the use of anything as overtly magical as house-elves.
Rather than a status-symbol, they’ve now become the opposite.
As for the Caravan…well, that isn’t really a life where house-elves make a lot of sense, but if a family had elves to begin with – they could quite possibly still have them, if you want. The relationship betwixt will likely be somewhat different of course, but if you want to explore that go for it! (Maybe the Malfoys have one, maybe even Dobby, but maybe they’re friendly instead Maybe the Parkinsons had one, and now they’re Pansy and Marietta’s loyal little Igor in the lab! Maybe Regulus still has Kreacher, who helps him and Remus run the school! Maybe Tonks Nymphadora grew-up with a little house-elf nanny, and they’re one of the things she misses the most about life back home in the Caravan? Maybe she sneaked them along, and is now hiding them in Colin’s flat! etc.)
There may also be elves running around “loose” in the Caravan – free, I mean – and how people react to them will likely vary greatly; have fun with that! (Maybe Narcissa thinks it’s vulgar. Maybe Gabrielle thinks it’s cute.)Certainly modern elves will probably not be so divorced from their original nature that they’ll have moved on to using wands (gasp!) but then again, they don’t really need to in order to do magic, do they? Maybe there are even a few who have become integral parts of the Caravan’s defense – because we know wix-magic and elf-magic don’t always jive, so perhaps part of the reason why the Caravan has been able to stay free is because the Ministry’s agents cant break their spells due to the layering of elf-magic alongside? Or maybe that’s just a rumor that Remus spread, to throw people off…
Maybe there are free house-elf colonies in the Forbidden Forest – the survivors of Hogwarts (if there were any) would have needed somewhere to go, after all, and perhaps they’ve been joined by others over the years. Maybe there’s a whole little thriving elf-village in there among the unicorns and centaurs and wolves!
Maybe there are homeless house-elves lurking in the shadows and alleys of London, begging for a home that will take them in… Maybe places like Cho’s teahouse and Dean’s bar have an elf on staff, to “look exotic” and entice/disquiet their non-magical patrons… Maybe the offices of the Ministry of Magical Regulation has a few elves around, even!
So – are you interested in adding a house-elf to your character’s life in some way? Go for it! Post a headcanon and introduce them to the rest of us! Or just toss them in with a side-mention in the next appropriate para – whatever works for you, odds are good that it will work for us.
tl;dr – have fun with the idea and do as thou wilt! We trust you guys!

Welcome to Monstrous Things, Rain!
“Thirteen-year-old Lavender Brown arrived unannounced at The Caravan on a cold and rainy night in mid September with no explanation of how they had found the well hidden caravan other than ‘Keep to the left, it said! That’s the last time I take directions from Vogue.’”
We are overjoyed to accept your application for Lavender Brown! The “different light” you plan to bring to them delights us both very much, and we likewise can’t wait to see where you’re planning on taking this once-familiar character. We look forward to sharing many exciting plots and predictions with you, and are honored to be the ones to welcome you back to roleplaying!
OOC Details:
Name: Rain
Pronouns: She/Her
Activity Level: I believe I should have no trouble meeting the expectations of this RP. I’ve been roleplaying in the high lit tumblr RP scene for many years and enjoy the depth of character you can find with para replies. I anticipate at least one reply a night most nights, and multiple replies on a good night.
General IC Details:
Name: Lavender Brown, to almost everyone. Lala, to those in the caravan. Nox, to those she teases.
Age: Twenty-Five Born: October 16th, 1980 Tarot Drawn: The Star & Strength
Drawing The Star is an indication of new beginnings, a fresh start if you will. While Strength brings self control and the power of love. Combined, this birth pair makes a formidable couple for the person for whom they are drawn. The Star becomes a wish, filled with positive energy, and an indication of growth and moving away from negative influences. Combined with strength this duo brings positive movement forward with the self control and focus to make things work.
Gender/Pronouns: They/Them
“Oh Lavender can’t you sit like a lady?”, “Lavender this is a special occasion, don’t you have a dress you can put on like a good little girl?”, these and many other easily dismissed statements followed Lavender through their early years, and yet it always sent a quiver of confusion through their heart. Lady, girl, daughter, the words felt as though they slid from Lavender’s shoulders like melting ice on a warming tin roof, they had no weight in Lavender’s soul.
Caravan life introduce Lavender to the rainbow of gender nonconformity, from there it was a natural transition into neutral pronouns, specifically they/them. Non-binary, or enby, is where Lavender finally settled in regards to gender. But what was a non-issue in the caravan has proven a more difficult to claim so openly in the bustle of London; a place, it seemed, where you could be anyone but queer. Those closest to Lavender respect their pronouns, but every passing day it seems more a struggle to remind casual acquaintances of this simple request.
Desired Changes: As mentioned above I plan to write Lavender with they/them pronouns.
Please describe the character’s education experience:
A half-blood is not such a bad thing to be amongst registered wix these days; at least one of your parents tried to give you the chance at a better life. Sadly Lavender did not benefit from their Muggle mother’s blood. At the age of eleven they were marked wix and sent off to The Royal Academy of Unnatural Education.
Overall, The Royal Academy was not a terrible experience, and Lavender could have easily lived out the full seven years of their education at the institution if it weren’t for all the books. Two years into their education and It seemed every page of their text books were screaming out rude words of warning. From headlines of doom, to orders to report to a wandering band of wix, Lavender came to know, without a shadow of a doubt, that their absence at this crucial time would have long term consequences. Easy would never be an option.
Thirteen-year-old Lavender Brown arrived unannounced at The Caravan on a cold and rainy night in mid September with no explanation of how they had escaped from The Royal Academy and found the well hidden caravan other than “Trap door in the kitchens, it said! That’s the last time I take directions from Vogue.”
Through the years and under practical tutelage in the Caravan, Lavender proved to have quick reflexes and a knack for dueling, but it was Sybil Trelawney who took the young enby under her care. The two would spend days on end in private lessons, seeking to understand their shared gifts. It was under her tutelage that Lavender was able to hone their skills as a seer, and in return Lavender brought out a side of Trelawney that few had seen in decades.
Job/Role:
Stripping was not Lavender’s first choice in occupation when they originally imagined life in London. The fantastical images painted in books and by the older members of the caravan had left little room for the practical side of life on their own. As such, their job at the quaint cafe and attached book shop below Lavender’s apartment, while picturesque, left the newcomer struggling to keep up with the cost of living in London. It was only when Lavender’s coworker mentioned her part time gig at Gryffin’s, and offered to set up a meeting for the young enby, that Lavender realized how beneficial this taboo line of work could be in maintaining the lifestyle she desired.
Barista by day, dancer by night was an exciting double life to lead for the soul who had hardly lived beyond the mesh flaps of their caravan tent. This second job proved to have other benefits as well though, opening a door Lavender did not even know they had.
London was a city shrouded in mystery, and part of Lavender’s role in the rebellion is to gather any snippets of information that they can scrounge up around London. Between the thump of a loud bass, private rooms, and flowing drink, Nox, Lavender’s alter ego, is finding it almost easy to pull secrets from the lips of clients.
Character Traits:
+ Charismatic – Charm comes easy to Lavender Brown, it is pure instinct that allows them to capture the attention of a room, or draw in a single person. That tilt of the head, a suspenseful pause before the punchline of a joke, Lavender has mastered the art of conversation. Perhaps an aspect of their abilities, Lavender can read a room and steer the conversation to motivate in the best way possible.
+ Reliable – Though persuasive and understanding personalities often make for excellent leaders Lavender prefers to take the role of co-pilot rather than head a crew. An excellent follower is not something most might brag about, but Lavender is capable, works well with almost anyone, and requires little oversight. Deadlines are always met and expectations are often exceeded.
+ Altruistic – Warm and kind, there is no action Lavender makes that is not genuine. They have an unyielding desire to do good for their found family, and are holding out hope that they will find the tipping point to bring balance between the wix and non-magical communities.
- Idealist – Their entire life Lavender has seen the world how it could possibly be, their premonitions may not always come to fruition, but that does not mean Lavender can shake the thoughts so easily. With so many lost dreams floating through Lavender’s mind and off their tongue Lavender is often seen as naive.
- Sensitive – While logically constructive criticism can be taken as a tool for improvement, Lavender struggles not to take every word of advice to heart. On a bad day their desire to do better for others can turn into a downward spiral of self loathing, while on the flip side can leave them up for days on end looking for solutions to problems that never even existed.
- Too Selfless – Lavender often finds themself overcommitted, buried up to their ears in promises as they strive to keep their word. Spread too thin, this often results in a crash and burn, leaving the enby unable to accomplish anything for days aside from self flagellation for their perceived failure,
OOC Questions
List three aspects of the character or world that that caught your interest.
I have never been drawn to golden trio era RPs, I have never seen the point of rehashing, or carrying on a storyline that we are all so very familiar with already. But the plot presented in Monstrous Things turns everything upside down! I love the gray morality and odd alignments! You’ve taken characters I have grown up with, who are solid fixtures in my heart, and turned them into shadows of what I know, and I want no, need to see where they are headed now.
I like the horror aspect of this RP as well. So many plots want to be beautiful, tidy, and fun, and while they do have their time and place, I have found the most enjoyment in writing the dark, angst, and gruesome.
Finally, I was drawn to Lavender through their promo. An amusing take on a precognitive character which can so easily fall into (slightly racist) tropes. They are a character that, in canon, is often considered annoying and vapid, and I like that here is an opportunity to explore them in a different light, to make them my own.
What is your dream plot?
While the government has never been convinced of the existence of seers that does not mean they are not interested in trying to confirm their existence. Lavender had been watched as a child, with officials even going as far as to make sure they were marked at wix for easier monitoring. So when they ran away at the age of thirteen it was much to the frustration of government officials. Lavender is not aware of this, but their return to London, when discovered by the ministry, will lead to unspeakable horrors. Finally of age, and having been trained under Trelawny – the other suspected seer who has managed to elude government capture – Lavender is believed to be a valuable resource for the Ministry. What secrets might be contained within her veins? Skin must be broken and sacrifices must be made in the search for the truth.
Lavender came to London on noble plans to aid the rebellion, but it is no secret she also came with love to share. To Lavender there is no life without love; love of family, love for their rabbit, Binky, love of mother earth, and love for the partner you share if life. Though they have sentimental notions of Love, Lavender has little practical experience with romantic relationships and could easily find themself tangled up in the one blind spot they have. It would be interesting to play with this, to have someone take advantage of Lavender’s kind heart and romantic notions. Perhaps a spy from the muggle ministry is attempting to gain information and access to the wix rebellion? Or maybe there is someone more nefarious, linked to the plot mentioned above.
Regarding Lavender’s mentor and adopted mother figure, Trelawny… In my mind she is still very much alive and living in the caravan. If the admins want to make her a playable character I’d be open to that, it would be nice to have that sort of dynamic to write with for Lavender. That being said, I would imagine she might be a difficult character to fill, and I’m also happy keeping her as an NPC. Lavender adores Sybil, and thus it would be great to kill her off just to see how Lavender handles such a deep and permanent loss.
As far as Lavender’s role in the rebellion, they are not a leader, though they are well liked by many. But I do see them as someone the leaders would trust. Lavender is good with people, and could be someone who steps in to keep peace, or to lend a trusted opinion. They could be someone entrusted with secrets and secret missions, and inner circle type of person. Obviously this is up to the Admin’s discretion, and I’d be happy to hear other ideas y’all may have.
Finally, I’d like to break into Gringots and old wix London, because, what the hell is even in there now?! I have to know!

Would a mermaid theme work in this RPG? Mermaids have long been my favorite mythical creatures and I would love to use it as a theme, but I'm stumped as to how. Any ideas?
Ooh, that is a fun one…let’s see what we can come up with! Of course, it depends on what character you’ve got in mind, but just some general thoughts:
You could do something with rusalkas, they’ve actually almost made it into the game once or twice already – whether that be someone who has actually drowned or nearly drowned, or more as a metaphor.
The whole “walking on knives” thing sounds like it’s got potential! Again, you can go more metaphorical or literal here; maybe your character has mobility issues or is confined to a wheelchair. Maybe your character has some kind of curse that actually cuts their feet open when they walk, leaving bloody footprints in their wake. Or something completely different!
I would hesitate to go with anything involving a lack of speech (a la Hans Christian Andersen), just because I’ve seen people play mute characters before and it seems very difficult to pull-off in interactions without being isolating – but if you think you can and want to, we’re up for trying it!
You could certainly play with voices in other ways than taking them.
Approaching it more from the practical-Potterverse-magical side, what about some kind of Transfiguration or Animagus attempt gone wrong?
Perhaps there’s a particular magical illness (or experiment result) that has left your character extremely dehydrated – to the point where they literally have to soak themselves regularly to keep from desiccating?
Sometimes mermaids are protective/rescuing, something they’re vengeful/murderous...maybe your character is both?
London is on a river and England itself is an island, so...you’ve certainly got ready access to water and ways for them to live on/near the water!
Aesthetically speaking, while Seapunk wasn’t developed until 2011, in this world fashion likely evolved differently thanks to the introduction of wixen culture, so feel free to also play with those elements for your character.
We already have one character tied to siren mythology so I would hesitate to do more with that, but if you can come up with a different way to play off of it than what we’ve already done, you’re more than welcome to use that.
Also check back later today because Admin Sara is brilliant when it comes to thinking outside of boxes, and she’ll likely have other (better) ideas for you!

I love all the world building in this RP! I do have a question about this AU I haven't seen answered yet. How are racial and gender diversity taken in this world? Does distain for wix extend to gender non conforming people or poc? Are there any dynamics we should be aware of while writing an app?
Thank you! I hope everyone (you along with anyone else out there) has been enjoying the eclipse!
To answer: this highly depends on the character. So, for example, the Caravan isn’t likely to care overly much about gender or racial diversity. For the Caravan, it’s likely going to be more important that the character has skills, or can develop skills, for survival. (After all, they’ve largely abandoned their blood-prejudices so any “less important” bigotries are probably moot now too.) And we do know via word-of-god-canon that the magical world wasn’t ever supposed to be overly prejudiced about sexuality or race, and it seems a fair assumption to extend that to gender diversity as well (particularly since wix seem to be largely irreligious and that’s the primary source of most of those prejudices) but as always, individual results may vary…
As for the non-magical world, probably the same prejudices that we have in ours are repeated there; maybe it’s worse in some ways because wix are presumed to be socially “non-conforming” in a great many ways, so people lump other forms of diversity in with magic as “bad” identities; maybe it’s better because since people have wix to hate and fear, that might leave them less time/interest to go around picking on other sorts of non-magical people. That’s something that could easily go either way – and probably does depending on each person!
tl;dr You’ve got loads of options for writing your app, so whatever way you want to take it, go ahead and run wild! We can’t wait to read it!
On the off-chance that you too far outside the box (not likely!) we’ll reign you back in. But I wouldn’t be too worried about that possibility if I were you!
P.S. if any of our players want to chime in with headcanons, propositions, or random spit-balling ideas on the subject, please feel free!

჻ MONSTROUS THINGS ~ THE BODYSNATCHER
NYMPHADORA BLACK ჻ 34 ჻ CARAVAN REBEL
჻ BIOGRAPHY
Nymphadora Black is the daughter of an unexpected union. Her father was a registered wix infiltrating the underground while her mother was an unregistered rebel spying on the Muggles' wix agents. They were never supposed to fall in love; as far as each know, the other never did, and was merely trying to cajole information from a target. Edward doesn't even know he has a daughter; he thinks Andromeda vanished to avoid arrest, not to hide a pregnancy. It was Andromeda's little sister who convinced her to have the baby, thinking that they might someday find it valuable to have something like that to hold over a government agent’s head.
Born as little more than a potential bargaining chip, Nymphadora surprised everyone by proving to have so much value as a spy herself.
That isn't usually a skill one inherits, no matter how talented at spying one's parents are, because it ought to be a matter of training not birth – but Nymphadora is a Metamorphmagus, which makes her ideally suited to conceal her own identity and even imitate others. It didn't take much tutelage at her mother's knee for her to hone those talents to their highest degree, and she started participating in anti-Muggle activities at a young age despite Andromeda's fears (just as she had with Ted, she found herself caring about her “little insurance policy” a great deal more than she’d intended). She's never been involved in anything as dangerous as her current role, however: completely taking-over the life of a rookie agent of the Unnatural Intelligence Department. It's been surprisingly easy – even fun at times – to impersonate Colin Creevey, which sometimes worries Nymphadora because it makes her forget the danger. She has to remind herself that the friends she's made aren't really her friends, and probably won't have her back if they discover the truth. She wonders if her dad will, if she ever has to play the last-ditch card of telling him who she is...
჻ CHARACTER TIES
OLIVER WOOD | THE BEST OF BROS Oliver was Colin's best friend, or work friend, or something. Nymphadora figured this out the first day on the job and has made sure to invite Oliver to the pub no less than six times since then. In some ways now, he's more her friend than Colin's...isn't he?
PERCY WEASLEY | CRASH AND CLATTER it all went downhill when Nymphadora -- wearing Colin's face of course -- visited his office. Or, more accurately, it all damn well shattered. Nymphadora is still pretending she totally didn't do that but she's pretty sure Percy doesn't believe her Colin.
REMUS LUPIN | MANTHER HUNTING the only thing weirder than walking in on your older cousin experimenting with doggy style at sixteen is realizing ten years later that you wouldn't mind chasing that wolf yourself, so to speak. Too bad he seems more than a little interested in running twice as fast whenever Nymphadora comes around. Good thing she's fast!

჻ MONSTROUS THINGS ~ JEKYLL AND HYDE
GINNY WEASLEY ჻ 24 ჻ MUGGLE DEFENSE
჻ BIOGRAPHY
Ginevra Weasley comes from a family of law-abiding, government-serving wix. The Weasleys are regarded as a “good” magical family -- at least as good as any family with magic in their blood can get -- and have had a close and fruitful relationship with the Muggle government for years. They almost all go straight from the Royal Academy of Unnatural Education to careers in government service. No one ever expected young Ginny to deviate from the mold set by her parents and six brothers before her, least of all Ginny herself -- but Ginny has been having trouble understanding her own motivations lately. Being a “good” wix does not absolve one of the burdens of having magical blood, after all, and sometimes that burden translates as being used as an unwitting test subject.
But who better to test a Loyalty Serum on than a child from such a good magical family?
Unfortunately the serum in question didn’t work exactly as intended. While Pandora Lovegood is an undeniable genius, she has a habit of cutting corners when she gets excited about a new idea, and she jumped to human testing sooner than she probably should have. With Pandora now distracted by an even newer idea, Ginny is left to the care of underlings and risky self-medication to manage her violent new “mood swings.” It’s a bit more than just her mood that shifts, though: her whole outlook on life seems to swing wildly back and forth, with periods of extreme loyalty offset by anger and even an inexplicable urge toward rebellion. Surely that’s just a result of the serum though and soon enough the government’s Research and Development department will find the solution to her little problem, because no Weasley could ever be genuinely disloyal -- or so they keep telling Ginny whenever her temper flares.
჻ CHARACTER TIES
LUNA LOVEGOOD | MY BEST FRENEMY it’s probably because of their friendship-since-daycare that Pandora chose Ginny as the most convenient test for her serum, but she can’t bring herself to blame Luna for that...except when something inside changes and she does.
DEAN THOMAS | THE EX Did Ginny ever really love Dean? She did let him escape -- and she doesn't regret it! But what her feelings really were, or are, is hard for her to figure out, especially these days when they flip in an eyeblink.

Could pretty much any mythology creature be used as a character them?
Yes! We used predominately horror movie themed ones (with a few exceptions) but we’re fans of folklore and twists on expectations so please feel free to be creative.

A Law Is Just A Thought Until It’s Passed.
As the debate rages on over the WIX CHILDREN’S SUPPORT ACT, those who support it have started to worry. Parts of the legislature have already been argued down, minimized, softened...
How can children be saved if they are allowed to stay with their wixen parents? Even with careful government observation, couldn’t WIX secretly harm their children -- or worse, people whisper, secretly teach them to rebel?
But how to prove that the solution was to take children? That’s not an idea that’s easy to sell to the public, not even when talking about magical children (the kind of children that nobody wants).
There needed to be another win, another Harry Potter or Neville Longbottom. There needed to be more current proof. Someone else who could be held-up in front of people, photographs printed in the newspaper to show how well it works out when magical children are raised the right way.
And there are always children at the Caravan. Always children at the Caravan’s market, children that nobody who matters will miss...
The raid isn’t sanctioned. It’s not even tied to government at all. But somehow notices go out anyway: there’s been an attack! There’s been an excuse. Here’s your pass through the wards, and now -- all hands on a wand and be careful of the children.
That’s what it says -- but no one asked the children what they wanted anyway.
They never do.
Your Characters...
Can come to the Caravan Market because they’ve heard about it and are curious. The Market is a small, haphazard blackmarket that takes place in the woods. It is not where the Caravan sleeps at night for safety reasons
If your character is a Caravan Character they may be there in general to sell things, to help out, to catch up with friends or family more involved with the moving lifestyle
If your character is a Government Employee: The location of the market and notice of attack was sent out to you by recorded phone message. Specifics are scarce but the information provided is clear that there is a real and present danger at the Market that must be dealt with immediately. This did not occur until after a small, harmless bomb was detonated in the middle of the market to sow chaos.
All characters who are not called in by the Government may start prior to to the small explosion. Afterwards, offensive or defensive activities are available to all characters but please remember collateral damage is possible and to talk to each other.

While our activity requirements are low, we do need everyone in the game to participate in order to keep everyone’s interactions moving! If you do not meet activity minimums, your character(s) will be reopened to keep them from clogging things for other players.
ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: You must post at least one para response, or two mini-para responses each week to maintain a minimum activity level. You must meet the minimum activity level at least three out of four weeks each month to remain a member. You may count only one starter post in each weekly activity measurement.
If you are struggling with plots or directions to take your characters, we will be happy to help!

Are you accepting parents/older characters or trying to keep it with the kids?
We’ll accept any named canon character in Marauders Era or Trio Era–and I’m certain that if someone was really taken with even older characters (Walburga, for example, or even Tom Riddle) we’d be happy to read those apps, too. In theory you could even app parents who are not canon named (Fleur and Gabrielle’s parents or Seamus Finnigans, for example)
Oh! And Sirius Black is likely a plot point so if you really want him please contact the main first so we can talk about what’s planned! (James and Lily are sadly dead unless you have a particular idea to work around the plot that murdered them)
Added: Nicky would like to also stress she is happy to write bios if you have a specific idea but are a little worried about working it into the world building. Anyone is free to send them to our ask anon or not.
