Hello! I'm an experienced RPer, but totally new to indie RPs and town RPs. It looks fun but it's a lot to take in. Any advice on where to begin? I know there are the apps, but I guess I'm wondering how the RP works. The biggest group I've ever RPed with had 4 people total. How do you manage getting involved and staying involved in such a large group? Thank you for putting up with my newbie questions. Hope you have a great day!
It can be a lot, I totally get it! For me, the way that I think of it is like…I have this character like in a book. It’s a closed universe that all characters live in and we all navigate it together. I can do starters for (in the form of a para, a text, an online tumblr post, etc) that would attract people in. I can reply to starters in the tag (ours here is called montclairstart) where others have things for me to reply to. OR, and this is my favorite part, you can chat out of character and decide what plots/connections your characters have and write your own based on that.
I think those three things are what keep me active and engaged when you make sure to do them frequently. If you start three threads and then never do anything else that’s new for weeks, you’re bound to get bored. Try and reach out to new people and make new connections. Your characters are real people so they know tons of others. Some they like. Some are family. Some they hate. Some are just passing encounters.
Another thing that is huge in an RP like ours is being active or at least following the OOC chat. Making friendships/connections out of character help fuel rping, in my opinion. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. I’m more than happy to help!

Meet Riley Wilde. Riley is 29 and hails from Portlaoise, County Laois, Ireland. They identify as pansexual/panromantic and are single. Unfortunately for you, this role is taken.
name: Riley Wilde
face claim: Robert Sheehan
pronouns: she/he/they
age & birthday: 29, June 6th
three positive traits: loving, creative, confident
three negative traits: manipulative, guarded, self-loathing
occupation: Musician
hometown: Portlaoise, County Laois, Ireland
BIO/HEADCANONS:
Growing up, Riley was a melancholy child. Their childhood had, compared to many others, been a decent one. After all, the Wilde family was well off, with the amount of money growing every year of Riley’s young life until they were one of the wealthiest names in their area of Ireland. But, it seemed like every moment not in school, the Wilde children were being brought from one church event to another. Deeply devout for Riley’s entire life, the church was their family’s whole world. Their mother made attempt after attempt, in earnest, to give her children the best life that she could. Yet, to Riley it always felt like the Gospel was always going to come first. If Riley wanted to be in gymnastics but it conflicted with youth group - gymnastics was out of the question. Sleepovers with friends on a Saturday night? Not unless everyone was going to come to church in the morning.
Not only that, but for a child that was becoming more and more effeminate as the years went by, Riley was also surrounded by the hateful rhetoric that tends to permeate the most greatly devout of Catholics. Being told that the feelings growing inside were going to send Riley straight to Hell was deeply traumatic for a little kid who just wanted to do good in the world. It was enough to keep Riley extremely repressed for many years - trying to be the good son they were expected to be.
The one solace Riley had from all this was music. David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Yoko Ono – these were their idols and anchors in a turbulent world. They were able to play some music of their own in school, learning basic chords, but most of their time was spent curled up in bed with an old Walkman, listening to the greats. In a locked bedroom with headphones on, Riley could be…Riley. Crazy and colorful and flamboyant. But, music wasn’t enough to keep Riley persevering through the act they were keeping up. By the time they reached their teenage years, Riley was fed up with the life they were living and, at 16, left home and headed for London using the money they’d saved up since they were a child. They worked any job they could get – waiter, deliveries, babysitting, and most lucratively prostitution when they had to – so they could buy a guitar, a keyboard and some music lessons. Music got them through an unhappy childhood and they felt the need to give back with music of their own.
Life has been the same in the nearly twelve years since then. Barely keeping afloat, they got by off of selling drugs or their body and working as a bartender in several local clubs. Still, they were so much happier than life had ever been under the Wilde roof. Riley’s music has a small following, but nothing much. They started their own band in their early twenties entitled The Cosmic Lovers. It’s a rock band that mostly caters to clubs, but have gone to a few festivals around Europe. They’ve never gone to university or held down a long term job or had a long term relationship. If you ask them though, they’d say that music is an education, a job, and a lover all in one, so they’d had no use for anything else.
Genderwise, Riley identifies as nonbinary and genderqueer, but doesn’t necessarily make a loud deal out of it. When they were young, they struggled a lot to try and learn the way that others perceived them. They could be hypermasculine or hyperfeminine or neither or both all in turns. They’d decided as a teenager they must be gay and had tried to embrace that. Gay men were allowed to be extremely effeminate, right? Called a f*ggot and a tr*nny and all range of insults, Riley didn’t so much take it to heart as they did turn themself into a spectacle. Yet, in their late teens/early twenties, Riley was starting to feel more like being a gay man wasn’t right. After finding themself in bed with more than a few women, Riley knew for certain that wasn’t it.
That’s when Riley contemplated socially transitioning to life as a woman. After all, women could be loud and confident and love to fight and play rock and roll music and all that. But a major shift came when Riley met some people in an underground LGBT club. Riley shared their history with sexuality and gender and heard tales of other people. It was thrilling for them to hear stories that echoed their own. People who didn’t feel exactly right in either binary gender. Now, Riley just is Riley and doesn’t have to worry about the details in between. Man? Woman? It didn’t matter at all to Riley.
Back to their life story, their move to the United States was certainly an unexpected one. While the Wilde parents weren’t exactly pleased when Riley had run away to London to live such a heathen lifestyle, they ultimately let it happen, praying that it was just a phase. When the years passed and Riley was showing no signs of return, they turned to more drastic measures. A struggling young person with no education and no real job prospects couldn’t afford to get disowned by parents as rich and powerful as the Wildes. So, Riley decided that if that was the way it had to be, they might as well move as far away as they could, free to live a life without parents breathing down their back. About five years ago, they made the move to New York City, getting work with some recording studios there and trying to build their band’s name.
Their name actually got large enough that Riley was able to fulfill a life long dream: opening up a homeless shelter for disadvantaged LGBT+ youth. They wanted to be the adult figure that they’d never had growing up. Six months ago, they moved to Montclair to oversee the final touches to the shelter that would allow the kids to attend school in town as well as have a safe, warm, and dry roof over their heads. As of right now, they commute to New York City every once in a while to make music, but Montclair is actually starting to feel like home.
Riley is a very independent person. They’ve always done things on their own and never ask for help from anyone, even if a lent hand would’ve made things much easier. They love being surrounded by people, though, and meeting as many new faces as possible. Charismatic and a smooth talker, they have an incredible talent to make friends with anyone. They love to make people laugh. They can come off as snappy and judgmental at times, especially when feeling threatened, but genuinely has a good heart and tries to find the best in themself and others. An agent of chaos, Riley loves to be the life of the party and the talk of the town. They are loyal friend and a terrible enemy, often clinging to their opinions no matter what. At the end of the day, though, they are talented and driven and just trying to find their place in a world where they’ve never felt like they’ve belonged.
