YES! YES! HE IS WONDERFUL AND YOUR ART IS WONDERFUL!
i'm alive! recently i've been watching granada holmes for the first time (with the aid of these excellent meta posts) and as a lifelong SH fan i can't believe i waited this long. jeremy brett holmes is EVERYTHING to me, and the holmes/watson domesticity and closeness makes me inexpressibly happy in my heart <333

knives out is so good for so many reasons but I really appreciate how utterly, absolutely, devastatingly sad it is that Harlan didn't have to die. he didn't want anything bad to happen to Marta because of a mistake she didn't actually make. he would've been fine. she was his friend and he died to protect her. what a perfectly executed tragedy.

Pack it up boys, we already lost.
The Empty House
“Holmes!”
“Wa-”
The Scene that broke not only Watson’s heart.
From Bending the Willow by David Stuart Davies:
At one moment it almost seems as though he is about to respond with a cry of ‘Watson’, but then he stops himself.
Brett explained: ‘That was deliberate. It wasn’t in the script but I just wanted to show that Holmes had affections for Watson and for a fleeting second they almost get the better of his practical mind. But they don’t. [Large Brett grin.] It is a moment.’

Ooh
looking at Sherlock Holmes adaptations and for reason when they cast a non-white person as one of the dynamic duo it's always Watson. does that have an implication? that has an implication.

Ough they kill me every day
Granada’s Devil’s Foot breaks me every time. You have Holmes doing drugs, and breaking Watson’s heart. You have Holmes quitting drugs. You have Holmes doing other, even more dangerous drugs that show us his trauma and disturbed mental state, and bring him to a state of unbelievable vulnerability that he was trying so hard to fight before. You have complicated family drama, messy feelings, pretty views, amazing acting with a bit of horror sprinkled in. 11/10 episode.

Holmes even says at the end of The Dying Detective that he has respect for Watson’s medical talent.
It is striking how determinedly Watson talks down on himself in the opening of A Study in Scarlet. He dismisses any courage he may have displayed in the war—granted I'm also not inclined to clap and cheer given the imperialism of it all, but that doesn't seem to factor into Watson's self-deprecations—glossing over it all as his "duties" and noting that many others did the same. After he is invalided home he derisively lumps himself among the "loungers and idlers", describes himself as having been "drained" to London as a useless specimen , calls his life "meaningless", and is derisive of his own financial management.
It's been a long time since I've read the canon stories, and I don't know how much of this I think is a mere aversion to boasting, how much a literary device to set against his transformation through working with Holmes, and how much might be actual self-loathing. But I mean to pay attention to it this read through.
