You bring up an interesting point when mentioning Walburga. I’ve never seen her in particular as being put into that stereotype, but that’s strictly because I’ve always seen her in the lense of the themes in the Black family - notably insanity. To me when the warning about the Blacks is their emotionally unstable streak, I felt like Rowling meant to use Walburga as an example. At the same time when you look at the portrayal of women in the series in a larger scope, it definitely becomes problematic. (Rowling has admitted she struggles to write female characters I believe? And….it shows a bit, I hate to say it). I've taken it upon myself to try and mould an actual character by looking at the possible causes that could have resulted in Walburga's absolutely unhinged portrait.

My headcanons on her involve 1) a childhood where while she was treated well, the adults around her were still toxic and she developed neuroses that grew worse over the years; 2) Something that happened in Grindewald's War/WWII during the London Blitz (she would have been a teenager); 3) What will be an extraordinarily careful examination of how upper class women back then were very much ignored and misunderstood when it came to post partum pregnancy ; 4) A very intense, passionate love for the glory of her family that due to what happens in my #2 headcanon, spins out of control in her adulthood. Call it a suspicion of mine that perhaps...Walburga was not ready for motherhood and what was likely an intense personality came with mixed emotions that she herself couldn't decipher. And no one would help her because the Wizarding World seems to chuck mental well being right out the window.

As far as to why Rowling chose a female character to represent Black insanity, the only thing I can think of when choosing the optimistic route is a thematic portion of motherhood that lays in the pages of her planning notes and was never put into the book. Mothers are highlighted over other themes in the Harry Potter series. The negative route is as you said - some really unfortunate implications about JKR's view on the female psyche. She uses language when describing other female characters that I don't like as well (notably the phrase "shrill" to describe a voice).

Thanks for the ask. I love talking about depictions of mental health in literature especially when it overlaps with gender theory ( my specialist area of research and work).

I have a meta (linked below) about how problematic I find Walburga’s portrayal.

It really reinforces some very negative views of women and mental illness. And one of the key barriers that prevent women seeking perinatal mental health services ( in the UK) is the socially- coded trope linking mental health to being a bad mother. There are innumerable women who can both manage a mental illness and be excellent mothers to their children. And the conflation between Walburga’s so called ‘madness’ and her being a bad mother, gives me the deepest ick and just reinforces harmful tropes.

Also her ‘screeching’ seems ripped out of a diagnostic manual from the 1800s. And the dialogue should have just gone the whole way, and have Kreacher fetch her a vibrator for her female hysteria. I’m being slightly facetious but it gets me riled up lol.

And although I love the books, everything should be consumed critically

in the dreams which are more memory, the days were hot and nights cold. slipping away to pillared kiosks with falooda and jalebi to share instead of learning lead to their mother calling for them, no reprimand on her lips. where marriage was out of question and his years were spent exploring and visiting the many places in their kingdom, of trying new things and meeting new people. of either being holed up in the library with his tutors with languages tripping over his tongue or in the courtyard with a sword heavy in his hand and sweat soaking his shirt. of sitting with his great aunt when his mother was busy with her work, imagining the sea and the island on which she came from, a land from which he’d be shipped gifts from.

sometimes the king would make an appearance, an out of place sculpture sweating in the heat and a smile which was made to cut diamond. they’ll sit in the gardens, and tom will tell him stories of his own home while harry will make him try melons and mangoes and follow the trail of juice with his mouth. or they’ll be behind a lattice screen in the summer palace, during the few months he has visited his home with the floor cool on his back and tom’s cold hands underneath his clothes, pulling the sash off him and muffling his cries with deep kisses which makes wake up, wanting.
