Butterflies in the Winter Time

Winter howled across the field. It blew its icy grasp through the solitary tree that dared to stand. And she stood, under the tree. Her thickest winter coat forced over a multitude of layers, her gloves pulled tight over her fingers, her socks pulled up as far as they could stretch, like hands reaching to heaven high; she knew she should’ve worn two pairs. She wrenches at her hat once more, pulling it as far down her head as possible (and wishes she worried more about practicality and less about fashion), as she buries her mouth and nose into her hand-knit scarf. Yet still she froze.

But for all her stiff fingers and numb toes she could feel the sweat upon her palms start to rise and, although springtime had long gone, the butterflies returned. They could not be seen, but felt. Their wings spread wide, as what seemed like thousands burst into frenzy, or maybe they burst into dance. Each wing flutter brushed against the inside of her stomach and consequently set her cheeks on fire. She had no idea one could burn so warm on the inside whilst freezing on the outside; in fact, she was convinced she was going to start melting the snow.

  She gazes upwards and can see the sun blazing in the sky, yet none of its warmth reaches her. She crosses her arms tightly across her chest and shivers once again.

Just found out that The Chariot are disbanding :( such sad news, they're a fantastic band. The worst part is that I never got to see them live...damn living in the UK! They are going to be sorely missed.
