Book 6 of 2020: River of Smoke by Amitav Ghosh . . You know what they say, Zadig Bey, he said in a teasing tone. No sensible man will let his lathi rule his head. It isn’t that, said Zadig. So what is it then? Is it a matter of - what do they call it - ishq? ‘Love’? Call it ishq, call it hubb, call it pyar, call it what you will. It’s in my heart. Isn’t it the same for you? Bahram thought about it for a bit and then shook his head. No, he said. For me and Chi-mei it’s not love. We call it ‘lob-pidgin’ and I like it better that way. The other thing - I wouldn’t know how to say it to her. Nor could she say it to me. When you don’t have a word for it how can you know if you feel it? . . #bookstagram #bookchallenge2020 #quarantinereads #riverofsmoke #amitavghosh #colonialism #southasianreads https://www.instagram.com/p/CB-6ImSFa2Y/?igshid=153sf9m05grys

Book 5 of 2020: The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins . . “Lord bless us! It was a Diamond! As large, or nearly, as plover’s egg! The light that streamed from it was like the light of the harvest moon. When you looked down into the stone, you looked into a yellow deep that drew your eyes into it so that they saw nothing else. It seemed unfathomable; this jewel, that you could hold between your finger and thumb, seemed unfathomable as the heavens themselves. We set it in the sun, and then shut the light out of the room, and it shone awfully out of the depths of its own brightness, with a moony gleam, in the dark.” . . #readingchallenge2020 #quarantinereads #wilkiecollins #themoonstone #orientalist #bookstagram #victorianbooks #colonialstories https://www.instagram.com/p/CAw1Ku8FldI/?igshid=we4o7urpv5sp

Book 2 of 2020: Naalukettu by M.T. Vasudevan Nair . . “The sound of the idiyaras grew deafening. Goose pimples broke out on Appunni’s body. He wished he could sway and dance as well. Holding the flower clusters tight in their hands, the girls swayed like serpents and moved over the Kalam, still seated. The drawing of the entwined serpents was being erased bit by bit... As he watched the young girl twist and turn, he felt that she was changing.” . . #quarantinereads #bookstagram #mtvasudevannair #naalukettu #indianliterature #readingchallenge2020 #kerala https://www.instagram.com/p/B-NB3OTlySn/?igshid=yknr9ysh0ko3

Book 1 of 2020: Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman . . ‘Crows. Family corvidae. Collective noun,’ intoned Mr Croup, relishing the sound of the word: ‘a murder’. . . Richard knocked on the door. Nothing happened. They waited, and they shivered from the early-morning cold. Richard knocked again. Finally, he rang the doorbell. The door was opened by a sleepy-looking footman, wearing a powdered, crooked wig and scarlet livery. He looked at the motley rabble on his doorstep with an expression that indicated that they had not been worth getting out of bed for. ‘Can I help you?’ said the footman. Richard had been told to fuck off and die with more warmth and good humour. . . #readingchallenge2020 #quarantinereads #neilgaiman #neverwhere #socialdistancing #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/B-CiNXmFuD9/?igshid=1n6quioof3u36

Book 5 of 2019: Flowers for the Judge by Margery Allingham He heard the bell ringing in the far-off mom for some time before a voice answered him. "Yes? Maida Vale 58423. Who is it, please?" Mr. Campion was puzzled. It was a womans voice and it was familiar, but he could not place it. Completely in the dark, he proceeded cautiously. "I say, I’m afraid you’ll think it frightfully odd of me ringing up like this," he began. "I wonder if it would be too much to ask you if I could come along and see you? It really is important and I wouldnt take up more than ten minutes of your time." "Do you know the address?" whispered the voice. "Its Thirty-two, Dorothy Studios, Denbigh Road, Kilburn. You open the garden gate and come down the steps." "Splendid. Ill be right along," he said, completely startled. "My name’s Campion, by the way." "Yes, I know. Ive been expecting you. My names Teddie Dell." Mr. Campion hung up the receiver slowly. He was very conscious of the fact that he had never heard either the name or the address in his life before. #2019readingchallenge #margeryallingham #bookstagram #campionmysteries #1930 https://www.instagram.com/p/B12ucdXFeqs/?igshid=1kcrm8zjdlzst

Book 3 of 2019: Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh . . “Neel, ever the obedient son, had allowed the language to wither in his head, yet, unbeknownst to him, it had been kept alive - and it was only now, in listening to Deeti's songs, that he recognized that the secret source of its nourishment was music: he had always had a great love of dadras, chaitis, barahmasas, horis, kajris - songs such as Deeti was singing. Listening to her now, he knew why Bhojpuri was the language of this music: because of all the tongues spoken between the Ganges and the Indus, there was none that was its equal in the expression of the nuances of love, longing, and separation - of the plight of those who leave and those who stay at home.” . .

Book 2 of 2019: Mafia Queens of Mumbai by Hussain Zaidi (with Jane Borges) Question, what does one do to pass time when one has about 3 hours of driving to forward to everyday? I generally listen to podcasts and I am seriously skeptical of non-traditional modes of reading books. BUT, l I thought I’d give audiobooks a whirl this time. “Sensing something was amiss, I decided to make a move. I quickly took the two polythene bags and walked away quietly. “Keep buying from here!”, Papamani said with a smile. I nodded although I wasn’t sure whether she meant the potatoes and onions or the ‘podis’, the business which, like Jyoti, she claimed to have stopped long ago. I walked away and when I felt that was enough distance between me and the women, I turned around to look at Papamani for one last time. She wasn’t sitting near the junction anymore. As for the vegetable stall, I saw a young boy stuff the vegetables into a jute bag and leave. In a few minutes the place had been cleared.” —————————————————— #audiobookstagram #mafiaqueensofmumbai #readingchallenge2019 #womenofmafiosi #gunsknivesandeverythingspice https://www.instagram.com/ashvenugopalan/p/BuELG6SF_k4SPT1yg2kx1h2VtXga-LsMaB2dH80/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xtm3unh8jljl

Book 1 of 2019: Death at Intervals by José Saramago . It’s taken me a while to finish reading this book. Saramago’s sentences are as long as paragraphs and his paragraphs stretch into pages. Nevertheless, it was an absolute pleasure to read! It’s satirical and hilarious. . . . “The following day, no one died. This fact, being absolutely contrary to life's rules, provoked enormous and, in the circumstances, perfectly justifiable anxiety in people's minds, for we have only to consider that in the entire forty volumes of universal history there is no mention, not even one exemplary case, of such a phenomenon ever having occurred, for a whole day to go by, with its generous allowance of twenty-four hours, diurnal and nocturnal, matutinal and vespertine, without one death from an illness, a fatal fall, or a successful suicide, not one, not a single one.” . . #josesaramago #bookstagram #readingchallenge2019 #lettersfromdeath #satire https://www.instagram.com/ashvenugopalan/p/Bt86vkMlh0llSsGR1My8E1OfzDDYeE9v7_ePuI0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=uj3552kw8es9

Book 6 of 2018: The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood “Nevertheless it hurts me to tell it over, over again. Once was enough: wasn't once enough for me at the time? But I keep on going with this sad and hungry and sordid, this limping and mutilated story, because after all I want you to hear it, as I will hear yours too if I ever get the chance, if I meet you or if you escape, in the future or in heaven or in prison or underground, some other place. What they have in common is that they're not here. By telling you anything at all I'm at least believing in you, I believe you're there, I believe you into being. Because I'm telling you this story I will your existence. I tell, therefore, you are.” @nehabhakar thanks for letting me borrow this! #2018bookchallenge #dystopianfiction #margaretatwood #reddresswhitewings #bookstagram #jezebels #feministnovels https://www.instagram.com/p/BqSRDSDFtLiUZZ2U8YE4ApIFBcj8ZOud0IGQAg0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1shskj7hx2ska

I don’t know how to talk about paintings. Sometimes they speak to me, most times I just don’t understand it. These paintings are just vibrant!
