From @electricliterature ’s list of 30 Dystopian Novels for and by women, #goldfamecitrus by #clairevayewatkins was book 21 in my #2018bookchallenge! . ⭐⭐⭐ . In a not-so-distant future, California has run out of water and is being evacuated. To the east, a giant dune sea has formed, growing and moving each day. When Luzz and Ray come across a toddler, their resolve to stay put in California crumbles and they leave to find her a better life with water. However, the dune sea find them and Ray and Luzz each have to do self reflection to find what they REALLY want. . I wasn’t sure what to rate this book… I enjoyed it the setting and the premise, but struggled with the main character, Luzz. In the first chapter, she is so helpless and lacking in agency I had to set the book down for a few days. In the end, it seems like a part of her journey to see how men use her, but it was still a thing I struggled with. In addition, whole chapters were dreamily stated reflections and dreams.
