Duster Part 19: Quadrum 20
Last time original colonist Henry was laid to rest, and the base was invaded by insects that did more damage to the poor huskies than most of the colonists themselves...
Let it never be said that our colonists do not learn their lessons: since the time they ran extremely low on food a few seasons ago, they are now incredibly well supplied. Starvation should not be a problem any time soon.
The away team arrives at their destination without trouble and makes their trade. A shame that (as I recall) nobody actually requires this jaw as yet, though I know there’s at least one colonist who’d volunteer anyway...
And the away-team returns safely too, through the fields and haystacks of the muffalo, alpacas and cows.
The jaw’s not in use yet, but there’s sufficient medication for Julio to make attempts to fix certain colonists’ anxiety problems...
Morales has had his morale restored! Only one finger away from no problems at all!
With Morales fixed, it’s Sky’s turn!
Another flawless treatment from Julio. At least until the next time they change bases and everyone develops anxiety again.
But some people don’t need much of an excuse to have what most people would consider to be breakdowns.
It’s one thing to set fire to grass, another to attack a poor muffalo! Some of these colonists ought to remember that very few of them are irreplaceable if they’re going to misbehave...
Oh no. We recognise this from very recently...
Only this time it’s the hospital chock-full of bugs, which will make any injuries hard to treat properly.
The bugs were dispatched, but at a cost of Skissor’s left ear and two toes...
And a toe from Blackrose too.
There weren’t enough beds in the hospital, so the resourceful huskies get involved with dragging the others to their own beds.
Those that aren’t injured themselves, anyway: Kilo got badly battered by bugs again, so we’ll have to see whether she can retain the pregnancy this time given her injuries.
Vas doesn’t have any permanent losses from the fight, but extreme pain and significant blood loss.
All of the injured are fortunate that there’s such a large supply of medicine and talented medics: Skissor has an infection in his chest, but it shouldn’t be any issue for Julio to deal with.
Another storage area has been built to hold all the excess food, and colonists continue to bond with the increasing number of huskies, as Steroid develops a bond with Raider.
An extremely tempting mission! Resurrector mech serum would have been one of the few things that might have saved Henry and might one day be required should anything happen to Zeiph! That would be hard to pass up!
And a second mission in a short period. It’s a valuable item, but if the colonists can get to the ship provided, they may not require it...
An away-team is formed to find and recover the resurrector mech serum, including many of those who were injured and have recovered in the meantime.
Not a short journey, but the away-team has known longer.
Back home there’s a surprising relationship: long-time colonist Lucya hasn’t had a relationship since her ex-husband Vladimir, but she’s been wooed by relative newbie (and pyromaniac) Rich. Hopefully there won’t be any dramatic heartbreaks shortly...
Speaking of love, Henry’s old service dog Jethro has finally gained some family members in the form of two puppy sons named Boccaccio and Slicer. Hopefully it will make up for his recent loss.
Elsewhere, the away-team arrive at their destination. The way looks clear...
Until they’re ambushed by dromedaries! But the team is too well armoured to sustain any serious injuries from the attack.
The Resurrector Mech Serum is in their hands! We just have to wonder how long it will be until they have to use it...
There’s just enough time in the season for the away-team to make it home.
And we notice the tangled nightmare that has become the huskies’ family tree, where a dog can somehow be a puppy’s brother, nephew and uncle. Let’s hope their genetics can stand it.
Final Stats:
Morales & Sky: less anxious!
Skissor: minus an ear and toes!
Rich & Lucya: relationshipped!
Huskies: inbred >.>

Duster Part 18: Quadrum 19
Last time Henry died on her first away mission in a very long time (because some people got themselves injured social fighting), leaving us with just one of the original three colonists. Is the whole project going to fail?
Whilst everything dramatic was happening elsewhere, the homebodies have finally constructed a better prison cell for captives. Blackrose may have been divested of her clothing for the botched parka delivery, but perhaps she’ll still choose to join the colony now. You never know when another member of the colony might die...
Speaking of bodies and home, the away team returns, with Henry’s corpse in the saddlebags.
Skissor puts her to rest in a nicely decorated sarcophagus of better times, with an animal bed for Jethro to use when he visits her.
*Licensed sad music plays*
Beatriz Henry, the very first volunteer to the challenge. She was never particularly sociable, but it seems she came to get away from her old life with its anxieties and pressures, to take on a challenge with her beloved therapy dog. In the early days her medical and shooting abilities were invaluable to the small group, saving many lives and limbs.
For all her flaws, she was a talented woman, and versatile. The colony gained members with greater individual skills than she had, but she could always find a way to be useful. With help she even overcame her anxiety, but kept loving Jethro all the same. Before that final mission, she was one of the most (literally) valuable members of the colony.
Her death was entirely unforeseen, and unavoidable at that point. All the armour and weapons in the world cannot protect from a plague in an unknown area of the map, far from the pile of advanced medicines they’d accumulated.
May she rest in peace, and watch over poor Jethro with fondness.
Ahem. Anyway, the base expands, with crop fields everywhere to prevent the recent food shortage from reoccuring.
There appears to be a bit of an issue about where the base was made, however...
Two hives burst through, one in the dining area and another in a bedroom corridor!
Oh, these bugs are vicious - poor puppy Cleo is immediately brutalised without the slightest defense-
The dogs are brave, but against insects of that size?
Even pregnant Kilo dived in, with probably many regrets on that decision.
The bugs are dispatched, and then so are the medics, desperately trying to save lives even if some limbs are unsalvageable...
It wasn’t just the dogs, either, though it seems that Rich may have suffered friendly-fire rather than bugs for the most part...
But the humans don’t really have it that badly...
Poor puppy Cleo got it the worst. Her life was saved, but she now has to try and manage on two legs...
And Kilo’s pregnancy couldn’t last under the circumstances.
Meanwhile, some people find themselves being viciously assaulted by a single rabbit. I don’t think Steroid’s going to get much sympathy.
Morales might get a bit more for a warg at least.
Somebody else puts paid to the terrible rabbit, so Steroid drags himself back for medical care. I expect the greatest danger would be of infection...
Brave Cleo has pulled through with no other scars, but as you might expect, the poor dog can only move quite slowly.
A trader stops by! And the colonists seize on the excellent opportunity to reduce the number of animals they’re dealing with, selling both spare alpacas and muffaloes, in exchange for more medical items.
Though they’re not exactly short of either afterwards, with these being the female animals...
And located a long way from them to prevent more pregnancies, the male animals. The dogs live in the main building, as you probably realise by how badly they were injured by the hives.
While making some valuable trades with passing ships for medical supplies, the colonists are offered a mission with a valuable reward.
The old away-team is assembled for the journey, which will hopefully not mirror the last...
It’s a far shorter distance at least, less time for things to go wrong.
Back home, Blackrose is recruited! Another person for the night shift, with some good skill at shooting and not bad for medical care. Could be useful for the away-team...
The mission’s target doesn’t look to be a hard one, with just the one turret and energy from a solar panel...
The away team conquers the base with ease. Not very much of value to be found, but that wasn’t the reward they were doing it for.
And they’re back home safely the next day!
Ah, it’s not been long since Jay’s last relationship, but it’s no bad thing for our colonists to seek comfort in each other!
Having missed the conversation, it’s not quite clear if Nobreitra was for or mocking aiding the downtrodden, but whichever it was worked on Jay.
The colonists have made a lot of progress with respect to technology research. They’re not far off being able to construct a ship themselves. That may be necessary if Zeiph (and Jethro?) dies, but they’re supposed to be trying to reach the ship provided on the other continent.
With all the huskies wandering around, it’s good that some bonds are being forged with the human colonists. Though whether that will just make it hurt the more when one of them dies...
Another mission! The colony’s interests and abilities with regards to prosthetics is apparently getting around...
A further distance than the last, back towards their old bases, but mostly by roads and easy terrain.
As seems to be becoming a tradition, those who do not want to go on missions get into fights so they’re too injured to be considered.
But Gazelle is forced to go anyway. They need those prosthetics!
Final Stats:
Henry: Laid to rest v.v
Zeiph: Under increasing pressure...
Blackrose: Recruited!
Jay & Nobreitra: Coupled up!
Cleo: The bravest and best girl in the universe, yes she is!
The rest of the huskies: Also incredibly good boys and girls

Duster Part 17: Quadrum 18

Last time it was realised that the colony had been massively overlooking how little food it had to feed the colonists and animals, while also having some very tempting caravan requests to complete...
Well, when you’re running out of food and everybody’s miserable, why not throw a party? Bellerose is still trying to get people to like him despite his tendency towards cannibalism (which would admittedly reduce the problem with the food situation).
Vas and co don’t get to benefit from the party, as they reach their caravan destination and complete the trade. If the traders valued that plant pot, it might have been a good idea to trade it for food...
Back home a lot of hard work is underway for the parka caravan request, as people who don’t usually even tailor are recruited for the pretty tight deadline. They could also really use more storage space, but a lot of that is due to the all the wood harvested from cutting down trees to create more crop fields.
But they’re never given time to focus, as some pirates come to raid. Again, while some of the better fighters are still off guarding the last caravan.
The pirates look more ready for winter than for battle - which actually reminds me, winter is actually a thing at this new base! The last bases were too equatorial for seasons, but this base is just northerly enough for winter to be distinct, though not particularly severe. Perhaps that too has been affecting the food coming in.
The colonists didn’t have time or inclination to wait for the pirates to get ready, and quickly gunned them down, leaving only one able to flee.
Morales got up in one of their faces and took a bit of a pistol-whipping...
And Rich, being a pyromaniac, let himself get a bit too close to a fire. But those were the only injuries for the colonists.
One of the pirates has been taken alive into the tiny prison that still exists at the edge of the base. Not that the colony really needs more people or more mouths to feed, but worst case Bellerose will eat them...
It would certainly all be easier if these crops could grow faster. Unfortunately there’s not a lot of very fertile soil around.
Meanwhile the first caravan made it back (briefly running out of food but managing on forage), and some of the main fighters begin making everything worse by getting into social fights. This is not what anyone needs right now.
Skissor even managed to crack Vas’ ear implant...
But Vas gave as good as he got, destroying one of Skissor’s toes.
Note that both of them have taken hits to their ability to move - looks like some people won’t be able to escort the next caravan...
The prisoner’s not having the best time, but they have proved useful already; it turned out that the parka she was wearing was good enough for the caravan, so she had all her clothes confiscated. She’s not thrilled about eating raw food either, but she’s lucky to be getting any food at all at the moment.
And with the prisoner’s parka added to the pile, the caravan is able to start the journey. With Vas and Skissor out of action, Henry’s going on a mission for the first time, and Gazelle with her boosted speed from her synthetic heart. Hopefully it shouldn’t be dangerous for just a caravan.
More concerningly, the journey’s expected to take about 5 days, and they only have 1.4 days of food with them, basically all the colony has right now. However, if they don’t leave now they’re unlikely to reach the destination in time, so they’re just going to see how they can do on forage.
Not far from the base, and already the new caravan gets ambushed.
Once again, the fight was over before it began, because just one fool thought they could take an armed caravan alone.
Back home there are more huskies to feed, but at least they can be useful. And Raider and Kilo are very monogamous given that there are other adult huskies around (the muffalo and alpacas could use some pointers on avoiding inbreeding).
Speaking of which, there are a lot fewer pregnancies now that they’ve gender segregated those animals again, but they’ve also had a bull and a cow join the colony. Hopefully some trader might pass by one of these days wanting to buy a few herd animals...
Back to the caravan, things are not going very well. Naturally, they did run out of food and stopped for a bit to regain supplies, but they are seriously running out of time to reach their destination by the deadline.
Recalling that Gazelle can go faster than everyone else due to her super-heart, she sets off alone with the muffalo to get there faster, leaving the other three colonists behind to gather more food.
Given that fighting was planned for more than farming and settling, the caravan is mostly winding up eating a lot of meat and sleeping in crappy shelters. Fortunately assault rifles can take down a lot of things.
Erm, plague isn’t fatal 100% of the time, is it? Is it? Er, can healroot help much with plague? Possibly?
In any case: behold! The distance Gazelle was from the destination when the deadline passed. Might they still sell them the healer mech serums in exchange for the parkas?
No, the healer mech serums were nowhere in evidence. On the bright side, Gazelle exchanged the parkas for a load of silver and all the pemmican they had, giving the caravan 35.3 days of food for the return journey.
Hopefully Gazelle arrives soon, because this is not the best base to have in the interim.
Not to forget Henry’s health - is the tending even helping?!
Fortunately Gazelle arrives swiftly, with piles and piles of pemmican for all (though they had already acquired a lot of boomalope steaks)!
Just in time to see Henry succumb to the plague.
Simultaneously, many miles away, poor Jethro intuitively knows what has happened. Honestly, I never thought he would outlive her.
Well, it’s almost the end of the quadrum, so we’ll leave the memorial until she’s back at the base - fortunately the party has enough carry weight with the muffalo to take her back.

It’s still going to take a couple of days to get back from where they are anyway.
Poor Jethro eventually collapses from lack of sleep while waiting for the return of his owner...

But the rest of the colonists weren’t oblivious as to his behaviour, so they’ve been able to prepare Henry’s resting place (with some space for any other casualties) before they arrive.
Final Stats:
Henry: Dead to plague :(
Jethro: Very sad :(
The whole colony: Lost out on a load of healer mech serum >:(
Hopefully the colonists will catch a break next quadrum...

Duster Part 16: Quadrum 17

Last time our colonists changed bases again (causing much emotional distress), and the colony still continues to grow and grow. Otherwise going fairly well though, which is suspicious at the best of times...

The fighting away team is just beginning its way back to the colony, having completed a mission in return for some ‘healer mech serum’... It’s already been delivered, but the colonists haven’t decided what should be done with it yet.

The base is being improved, but that doesn’t stop some colonists getting down about its intermediate state. Admittedly I’ve never lived somewhere so shabby, but you’d think they’d appreciate the approvement from all sleeping cramped in one ruined building?

You can never predict the local wildlife down on Duster. I’m glad boomrats haven’t yet found their way to the glitterworlds!

Who would think such relatively small animals could cause so much damage?! Gazelle is downed, and Sky’s managed to let three of them into the store room! They could lose everything in there!

Fortunately, with some quick thinking, Lucya deconstructed a piece of wooden wall, allowing the colonists in to fight the fire without being incinerated in the heat, so it doesn’t look like much has been lost, just damaged.

Poor brave Jethro got right in the face of the boomrats to protect Henry, and suffered a lot of burns according. Hopefully they can all heal cleanly.

Lion took a minor burn, but not enough to warrant another prosthetic...

Gazelle’s biggest problem wasn’t even the burns, as those boomrats really attacked her with tooth and claw...

Zeiph took a couple of burns that should be easily patched up...

Sky looks similar to Gazelle, just not quite so badly battered...

Jay barely even faced the boomrats, but went into the burning store room before the wall was broken open to protect dear Sky from them - you can see the intensity of the burns, even losing a finger to the fire - it’s not surprising he’s got heatstroke.

Jethro’s not the only animal to have suffered either, but the boar gets patched up too.

After helping everyone else, Lucya finally gets to treat her own boomrat wounds, which are fortunately fairly minor.

And then Vas and co return to the base, some still sporting their own (badly patched) wounds from their away fight.

Of course after all that there was blood trails all over the base, but newest colonist Rich (one of the three nocturnal colonists) proves himself useful with the chores so that nobody else goes mad.
Also: Lion and Steroid are ever the loving couple that they have been.

But will Rich remain the newest colonist? A new man crash lands not far from the base...

Rich rescues the man and does his best to patch him up in the still-being-developed hospital room.
Unfortunately(?) the man staggers away from the base as soon as he can walk again, so Rich remains the New Guy.

Oh no! Sky, perhaps moved by Jay’s attempts to protect them from the boomrats and fire, tried to propose, but Jay said no. Alas, now there’s going to need to be another separate bedroom...

The hospital is really beginning to take shape, and Zeiph is working on a replacement for the substandard prosthetic heart Gazelle is currently using.

There’s a caravan request, and the Orange Banastra clearly know the way to our colonists’ hearts, offering a couple of prosthetics (and a uranium plant pot?!) for their effort. There are plenty of spare hands around, I’m sure they’ll work on it.

Speaking of medical matters, it seems it’s been decided that surgeon Julio is going to be the one who benefits from the healer mech serum. Let’s see what happens...

And just like that his frailty is gone! Besides his remaining issue in one shoulder, he’s almost as good as new! Hopefully this will improve his surgery success chances even further.

Especially because that new heart is ready for Gazelle! It’s very tense...

But it’s a success! And they even get the surrogate heart back in storage for emergencies (I hope they sterilise it properly before reuse)!

And then Gazelle is up and about and better than ever! I expect Lion is green with envy and planning how to get her heart damaged without dying so that she can have one too.

Bellerose is not very popular in the colony, but he has managed to make a friend of young husky Tara. I think if I had to live down in this colony, I’d want an attack/guard dog to protect me too...

There are two important issues to note here:
1) A second caravan request, offering three healer mech serums, which would be amazing;
2) While everybody’s been busy working on the base and prosthetics, the colony has almost run out of food (a shame you can’t eat healroot). I think they’re not accustomed to feeding quite so many human and animal mouths...

Most of what food they do have is quickly snatched up by the caravan party (including now speedier Gazelle) to get those prosthetics.

The destination’s a long way south, and even that amount of food’s probably less than ideal for the journey, but hopefully they can make up the difference with forage...
But that’s the end of the quadrum!
Final Stats:
Jethro: Is the bravest boy.
Gazelle: Has a great new heart!
Julio: Now as sprightly as a man half his age!
Sky: Forever alone :(
Jay: Forever alone, but at least by choice. Also had a finger burnt off D:
Everyone: Precariously close to malnutrition and starvation... Let’s hope they can fix that next quadrum and get those healer mech serums!

Duster Colonists: Septober 5504

There’s an awful lot of colonists nowadays and the broadcasts have been slow in processing, so here’s a recap of who we’re dealing with!
Beatriz Henry - one of the three original colonists, now biologically 61, been with the colony 4 years. Came with her pet husky Jethro, but even now barely likes anybody else (closest friend is Lucya with +10/+18). This is perhaps unsurprising as she’s a misandrist and most of the other colonists at this point are male (she’s also slothful). As a child she was a music lover and grew up to be a vet, which gave her decent artistic, medical and intellectual skills (all of which she enjoys) as well as animal handling, and she has developed decent shooting and melee that she enjoys too. She’s lost an ear and a toe, but the (right) ear has been replaced with a bionic. Personally she is generous, emotional, judgemental, pure and logical. Other random fact: she hasn’t spent a single second on fire, apparently.
Francois ‘Zeiph’ Schmitt - one of the three original colonists, now biologically 60, been with the colony 4 years. Grew up as a nerd and became a state engineer before taking the challenge and becoming a colonist. He’s accordingly one of the most intellectual of the colonists and is good at crafting, making most of the prosthetics they have needed. He’s also good at shooting (has a sniper rifle), construction, mining, cooking and animal handling, but he cannot social at all. He’s a night owl and a masochist, but is ironically one of the very few colonists who has no consistent pain, despite having lost an ear (since replaced with a bionic), a toe, and has an old gunshot wound in his chest. He apparently has a number of relatives out there, including a wife, ex-wife, father and stepmother, but we haven’t met any of them yet. He feels positively about a number of the other colonists, but the only one it tends to be mutual with is Lucya (+19/+24). Personally he is nostalgic, passionate, emotional and competitive. Other random fact: despite his wife and ex-wife, he’s a 4 on the kinsey scale so is actually slightly more interested in men than women (in the closet perhaps?).
Legua Lion - was a tribesperson and the first person to try and raid the colony, but was captured and converted and has now been with the colony for about 3 1/2 years (age 54). She was initially a fire keeper and then a lore keeper for her tribe, but given that she’s a transhumanist (and a socialite), it’s not surprising she give in for the chance of a more technologically developed settlement. On that note she’s already got an archotech eye (that she didn’t really need) and an advanced bionic ear, together with missing a finger and having scars on her torso and left arm. Her best skill is construction, but she’s also good at cooking, plants, crafting, medical, social and intellectual. She’s been married to Colin ‘Steroid’ Neemor for a year, and is on good terms with a lot of the colonists. Personally she is compassionate, generous, thoughtful, geeky and moralistic. Other random fact: she was a prisoner for 21 days before converting.
Vaska ‘Vas’ Neemor - Vas was rescued from a nearby location of the first base, and has been with the colony for about 3 years (now age 49). He was a vat-grown assassin and a mercenary, which has left him with great skills in shooting and melee, as well as being good at construction and animals, but he is unable to do cooking, planting, medical or artistic. He’s also a brawler so he doesn’t even like to use his shooting skill, and is unfortunately ugly, but that hasn’t stopped him having relationships (as per the deceased Priscilla Bellerose) and minor friendships amongst the colonists. Steroid is his brother, and their mother stopped by at one point in a caravan. He’s had to have a bionic ear implant, and has a bite scar on a shoulder. Personally he’s extremely trusting and outspoken. Other random fact: he’s dealt 1894 points of damage as a colonist.
Lucya Dalton - Lucya was chased by tribespeople and joined the colony almost 3 1/2 years ago, and is now age 32. She grew up in a convent and became an evangelist as an adult, making her incapable of violence or intellectual skills, but she’s decent at cooking, construction and plants. She’s a night owl, a pluviophile and a transhumanist, but she’s not had any opportunity for the latter since she’s always kept out of the firing line (though she came with a scratch scar on her head). She gets on with a lot of the colonists and was previously married to now-deceased probable-asshole Vladimir Black. Personally she’s extremely geeky, as well as pure, naive, judgemental, outspoken and emotional. Other random fact: apparently she’s cooked 2190 meals.
Skyler ‘Sky’ Guy - Sky was a prison guard holding Lucya’s ex-husband Vladimir, and was taken captive when the colonists came to free him. He was subsequently converted and has now been a colonist for about 3 years (now age 29). He spent most of his childhood in a coma, and then became a paramedic when he woke and grew up - his best skills are planting, medical and social. He’s psychically hypersensitive and a jogger, and personally empathetic, nostalgic, organised and rational. He’s currently dating Green Jay but isn’t overly close with anyone else (closest +14/+14 with Vas, fighting buddy). He hasn’t been too injured, has a stab scar in his leg, but has recently developed anxiety. Other random fact: has now spent exactly the same amount of time cleaning as he spent as a prisoner (9.2 days).
Lorenzo Morales - Morales was a prison guard holding Vas’ ex-lover Priscilla, and was taken captive when the colonists came to free her. He was subsequently converted and has now been a colonist for about 2 1/2 years (now age 33). As a child he was a shopkeeper and then became a caveworld illustrator as an adult - probably related to the fact that’s he’s an undergrounder, depressive and a pluviophile, which has left him good at mining as well as social. Despite the social skill he’s actually not very good with people, with his best relationship being with Green Jay (+15/+10). Personally he’s adventurous, extroverted, moralistic, experimental and passionate. His only physical injury has been losing a finger, but he’s recently gained anxiety from the base move. Other random fact: he spent 18 days as a prisoner before converting.
Julio Steele - Julio was chased to the colony by tribespeople and joined about 2 1/2 years ago (now age 78). As a child he was used as an organ farm and then got free as an adult to become a housemate. Nowadays he’s an incredible medic (despite being slothful and psychically hypersensitive), but most of his other skills are underdeveloped and he can’t shoot or melee at all. For his own health, he’s got an old gunshot in his shoulder and is currently frail, but with some health serum...? Personally he’s extroverted, generous, organised and empathetic and he’s relatively popular, including being a mutual friend with Emu. Other random fact: he’s a 5/6 on the kinsey scale, so he’s out for another guy if possible.
Colin ‘Steroid’ Neemor - Steroid was the first person to join at the second base when he was chased by tribespeople there, joining about 2 years ago (now age 44). Unlike his older brother Vas, Steroid grew up as a medical assistant and then became a civil servant as an adult. He’s very skilled with animals, and decent with cooking, social and intellectual, but for some reason cannot fight fires. He’s jealous, a gourmand and a nudist, but isn’t allowed to actually go around naked for his own safety and other people’s sakes. Naturally he has good relationships with his wife Lion and brother Vas, but he’s also pretty popular with other colonists, and has bonded with an alpaca named Aesop. Physically he has a scratch scar on his left arm, and personally he is generous and extroverted, as well as aggressive, competitive, cultured, cool and trusting. Other random fact: has never killed a human, but has still managed to deal 1296 damage.
Nobreitra Xosea - Nobreitra was one of the tribespeople who chased Steroid to the second base and was captured and converted, so he’s been part of the colony for almost 2 years (now age 39). He was a tribe child and then grew into a digger, and is an undergrounder, bleeding heart and codependent. His best skills are construction, plants, shooting and melee. He’s taken some damage from the fights, having lost an eye (replaced with an advanced bionic) and three toes. Socially he likes quite a few people, but it’s rarely mutual, and personally he’s spontaneous, judgmental, romantic, outspoken, cultured and empathetic. Other random fact: he took 12 days to convert, and is a 2 on the kinsey scale, so is nearly evenly bisexual.
Jean ‘Frenchy’ De Dion - Frenchy was a pirate who came as part of a raid and got captured and converted, so he’s been part of the colony for almost 1 1/2 years (now age 28). Before becoming a pirate he was a corp student and an executive officer, and he’s incredible at intellectual and pretty good at social, but can’t do medical or cleaning. He’s codependent and a fast walker, and actually manages to have two mutual friends (Jay and Hauke) and is generally fairly popular. Personally he’s judgmental, cool, polite, friendly and emotional, and physically his only damage is one missing toe. Other random fact: he took exactly a season (15 days) to convert.
Hauke Pahl - Hauke was fleeing tribespeople when he joined the colony, and has been a colonist for almost 1 1/2 years (now age 20). He was barely out of childhood and had spent the whole time as a medieval slave, but somehow still being sedentary (and psychically hypersensitive). Being so young he doesn’t really have any developed skills, but there’s nothing he refuses to do, and he’s taken no lasting injuries so far. The only people he’s at all close to are Frenchy and Lion, but there’s nobody he dislikes. Personally he’s pure, cultured and logical. Other random fact: he’s chronologically 68 years old, so he was probably kept in stasis until somebody bought/found him to be their slave.
Emu Trobo - Emu was one of the tribespeople chasing Hauke and was captured and converted, having now been a colonist for about a year (now age 60). He was a tribe child and grew into a healer, but he’s misogynistic and has an annoying voice, so maybe he’s not particularly missed. None of his skills are above 9 (animal handling) and he doesn’t have much enthusiasm either, plus he has brain damage from a machine pistol (slightly improved by a brain stimulator) so he’s probably not learning very well regardless (also lost a couple toes). Personally he’s extroverted, outspoken and experimental, and manages to have a friend in Julio. Other random fact: took 18 days to convert.
Green Jay - Jay was another one of the tribespeople chasing Hauke and was captured and converted, having now been a colonist for a bit over a year (now age 44). She was a cave child and then a scout, so she’s an undergrounder, a masochist and has a great memory. She’s very good at construction and has enthusiasm for mining and plants. She’s dating Sky and is very good friends with Frenchy, and is popular with others she doesn’t like as much, and personally she’s empathetic, nostalgic, trusting, passionate and friendly. She has taken a few hits, losing a finger and having an old gunshot wound in her torso. Other random fact: converted after 10 days.
Gordon Bellerose - Bellerose crashed to the ground right by the second base and was rescued and chose to join after a few days, so has now been a colonist for about a year (now age 47). He was an organ farm as a child, and then got to become a mathematician as an adult, being very good at intellectual skills, but unable to do violence and unwilling to do hauling and cleaning. He was the father of an already deceased colonist (Priscilla), but nobody else really likes him, perhaps because he’s a cannibal (with a great memory?). For those who can get past the cannibal tendencies, he’s polite, trusting, adventurous, thoughtful and compassionate. Other random fact: ... we probably should have not kept him, but we felt bad about Priscilla?
Ricardo ‘Skissor’ Rodriguez - Skissor was part of another group after the same stash as our colonists and got taken down, captured and converted, so he’s now been a part of the colony for about 1/2 a year (now age 25). He was a bunker kid who grew into a game tester, with good skills in shooting and melee, but won’t do planting or artistic things. He’s also misogynistic, greedy and ‘too smart’, which is probably why most of the other colonists aren’t very keen on him. He’s personally competitive, extroverted and ambitious. Other random fact: he converted after 17 days, and is a 5/6 on the kinsey scale, so just as well he doesn’t need to get involved with women.
Emilia ‘Gazelle’ Norris - Gazelle was part of the same group as Skissor that was after the same stash as our colonists and got taken down, captured and converted, so she’s now been a part of the colony for about 1/2 a year (now age 69). She was a pyromaniac as a child and then became a defector as an adult, still being a pyromaniac and also super-immune, so she won’t fight fires or do artistic things, but she’s good at shooting, melee and medicine. There are some people Gazelle likes, but none of them like her. Personally she’s judgemental, nostalgic, passionate, optimistic and compassionate. Physically her only issue is that she’s got a surrogate heart that’s not very effective, but there’s plans to replace that if she can survive the surgery. Other random fact: she took 14 days to convert and has never been on fire despite her pyro tendencies.
Tycho Rich - Rich was part of a group of pirates who came to raid the colony, got captured and converted, so he’s been a colonist for less than one season (current age 36). Rich was another pyromaniac as a kid, and then got to become a sheriff as an adult, being promising at construction and shooting, but unable to fight fires. He’s still a pyromaniac, but also an iron-willed night owl. He has a lover out there somewhere, but within the colony he only really has rivals so far. Once there stops being mutual hatred, he is judgemental, naive, cool, moralistic and intelligent. Other random fact: he took 29 days to convert, the longest of anyone so far.
Hopefully more episodes soon!

Duster Part 15: Quadrum 15 + 16

Last quadrum there was some tragedy as one colonist was lost during surgery, and an original colonist was killed during a raid while the best fighters are away on a quest. They’re now in full preparation for moving bases once again - will everyone survive that again this time...?

Since Gazelle was recruited, and they’ll be without a hospital for a while once they move, Julio and Gazelle decided to replace her heart now lest her artery blockage get worse before they’ve set up again.

Except maybe they should have checked just how good the surrogate heart is first. The artery blockage was only minor, and her actual heart was still a lot more efficient than this relatively basic alternative...

The local pirates are still showing bad judgement on their targeting the fighting away-party on their journeys to and from.

It never takes very much to sort the overly-ambitious pirates out, especially at rates of 4 to 1.

Back home a wild muffalo has apparently liked the look of the set-up for the tame muffalos and chosen to tame itself. At least the colonists will get extra carry-space as they move.

Meanwhile a prisoner has decided it would be preferable to travel as a colonist than a prisoner, joining Gazelle. Skissor doesn’t have a very good personality, but he is promising for the fighting away-team, especially with some medical skill too.

Rich is the last remaining prisoner, but it seems to have only made him bolder, or at least more foolish...

It can’t be good for anyone to take so many bullets so frequently!

He managed to take one of Frenchy’s toes down with him though. More work for Julio eventually...

Finally the away-team returns again - they’ll have to find out about the deaths while they were away, but most of the colonists don’t seem to be especially emotionally close to each other.

Just as everything seems to calm down, the animals take up the cause, as a wild grizzly bear decides to try to eat an alpaca...

Fortunately a nearby muffalo came to its aid, taking a bad clawing...

But not as badly as the poor alpaca, who’s lost an eye and its nose. Neither are dead though, so their lives should be able to be saved.

The other factions are still trying to send quests, but it’s not going to fit with the colony’s plans at the moment. Especially if they aren’t even offering prosthetics.

A second relationship has formed! Should be useful at the next base, as that could be one less bedroom required...

But as I mentioned earlier, despite all the time a lot of the colonists have spent together, most of them really don’t care that much for each other.

And now it’s time for them all to move on! I’m surprised they aren’t even more visible, given how many of them and their animals there are...

It’s a long journey planned, through a lot of unappealing land. Fortunately with all their animals they can carry a lot of food for the journey.

Though speaking of food, Julio gets food poisoning at just the wrong time and has to be carried away from the base.

And the base starts to fall apart not long after they’ve left, with an electrical fault in the hospital...

Which quickly destroys a lot of the base left behind.

Just like last time, the process of moving bases really takes its toll on the colonists. Morales is losing his morale!

And just as the season turns, the colonists reach their new base!
(For some reason our cameras seem to be struggling at this new location, so please forgive the reduced detail...)

And they immediately dump everything on the floor, whilst the unrestricted animals take the opportunity to get it on before they can be gender segregated again.

Sky takes the initiative to pick up everyone’s mood with a party in the giant stockpile. Not sure it helped very much.

Prisoner Rich certainly isn’t happy, and there’s no prison cell to put him in to begin with!

It’s up to heavily-armed Nobreitra to put him down and prevent him burning down the new location.

Even at the new base, the stress is still getting to colonists. They’re going to need more glitterworld medication and a new hospital for all this!

Like last time, the fighting colonists set about taking down some of the more dangerous wildlife in the area, but Emu hasn’t been entirely prepared...

He won the fight with the warg, but barely, and everyone else is sleeping! Will they be able to treat him in time?

Hauke gets out of bed to bring him back to the ruins that have been co-opted as a base for now and patch him up, but it’s very close on time...

Emu’s life is saved, but he continues to take long-term physical damage. Frankly it’s surprising he’s not one of the ones with PTSD!

For some obscure reason, a local rat decides that this situation is ideal for it to join. It’d barely be worth killing for the meat and leather.

The one good thing about such a large group of colonists is that there’s many hands to mine and build in good time. The various local ruins are mostly storerooms now, as the mountain is carved into separate bedrooms and a living area is constructed.

But the colonists are still struggling with the changes, and periodically fights break out over the tiniest of things. Most of them still don’t seem to like each other.

Ah, another quest, and one with the very valuable healer mech serum that the colonists have previously been denied. I expect they’ll strongly consider this one...

Of course the animals were all breeding on the way, resulting in more husky puppies, a girl...

And a boy, with the same father as last time. A shame no puppies still for Jethro.

And when I say all the animals were breeding on the way, I do mean all the animals were breeding on the way. Hopefully they might be able to sell some at some point, or all the alpaca and muffalo may rid the whole area of grass.

As I expected, the colonists are interested in that healer mech serum, so the fighters head out on the new mission.

Meanwhile the base grows ever larger and has gained considerable electricity.

But still the fights haven’t stopped, this time between the women.

Though I suspect Lion’s just angling for more prosthetic parts.

I suppose most of the colonists never volunteered for this experience, but it does astound me that some of them can expect so much in these circumstances.

Traders come by occasionally as well, and this one had the ever valuable glitterworld medicine, plasteel, and even a bionic hand. The colonists really should be careful with their money, if ever they desperately need other resources they can’t then afford. You can’t eat plasteel!

You also shouldn’t eat raw corn, but sometimes the colonists get desperate.

Very desperate. I must say, I am very glad to be viewing all this from orbit, dear viewers. I don’t think I would ever have the patience for any of this.

But there is some good news: prisoner Rich chose to join the colony! Well, I say good news - he does seem to be a pyromaniac and other colonists will have better skills than him, but he is also only the third night owl in the colony, so he could be useful.

Meanwhile the fighters reach their destination! There’s only the one turret and it’s powered by a solar panel, so hopefully not too much of an issue...

To be safe, they start out by attacking the solar panel, well outside the turret’s range.

There’s more enemies than they expected though, and Vas is downed!

Nobreitra goes down too, but not before the battle is won.

Vas mostly took bludgeoning hits, but we shouldn’t underestimate those, given what happened to Dead...

Nobreitra took more serious slicing wounds to be patched up, though there’s no helping the toes.

After all that, they spend the night to heal up a bit before the return journey.

But even then the healer mech serum has been delivered to the main base... We’ll have to see what they decide to do with it next season!
Final Stats:
Skissor: Joined
Rich: Joined
Gazelle: Joined, but actually worse off for her heart replacement
Everybody: Still alive! But traumatised by the journey and initial shittiness of the new base.
Animals: PREGNANCIES EVERYWHERE

Deceased RimWorld Colonists so far
I gave Dead her own post as a starting colonist, but the others (who I could have sworn there were more of) can share, in chronological order (though beware my dreadful MS paint skillz):
Lisa Hogan

Our very first colonist death and the only one in the first year of the colony. Lost an arm and her heart to the first scyther we came across. Didn’t get the chance to become very useful, but she had a lovely personality, poor woman.
Vladimir Black

Vladimir and Beryl were so badly injured by an exploding turret that we’re just gonna give them red clothes rather than represent every piece of shrapnel. I have, however, added red lines to Vladimir’s head that got shredded, because TS4 does not have red cowboy hats or facepaint, so.
We have conflicting feelings about Vladimir because he was skilled and incredibly sociable, but his personality was not good and he was Lucya’s ex-husband, and Lucya is very quiet and sweet (and half his age...). I suspect he was a manipulative asshole, but he never really got the chance to prove it.
Joel ‘Beryl’ Gemhunter

Poor Beryl. Despite having a nice personality, he was a massive pain in the ass for most of the time we had him, but that was because he was coming off a drug addiction, which he had just overcome when he died. And unlike Vladimir he didn’t die instantly but bled out from a whole stack of wounds because there was nobody able or conscious enough to doctor at the site. A sad waste of potential good life :(
Priscilla Bellerose

Priscilla died by getting shot to hell all over by the people freed from crypotsleep caskets, including her brain. Priscilla was awesome, even though Vladimir and Beryl (and Fuego we’re not counting) died to get her. An ex-idol, she was a fantastic fighter and good at art and social. Probably one of my favourite colonists so far (might actually just play her in the sims now...).
Erin ‘Eri’ Parrish

I can’t say Eri was most valuable as a colonist given that she was already a slowpoke, had a bad spine until near the end, and most of what skills she had weren’t useful, but the amount she cleaned was a great help. And it was bloody annoying that the very complicated whole-spine-replacement surgery was absolutely fine, but replacing one kidney was what killed her. Le sigh.
And then Dead died, of course. It’s been a little while since I played, but I swear it felt like we’d lost more by now. I’m getting close to another update, so the series isn’t dead yet.

Duster Colonists: Elisabeth Dead
If I could draw I would totally do cartoon versions of my colonists, but I can’t, so instead I have the sims! In memory of the first of our starting colonists to die, I have recreated a more realistic version of Dead:

On the left we have her in her original form, and on the right slightly modified to how she was on death - missing a little finger and with a replacement ear. Can’t really see the cause of death given that it was massive bruising to her torso (*shakes fist at bandits*).
RIP the brawler music teacher, you were gone too soon.

Duster Part 14: Quadrum 14

Last quadrum the colony was kept busy with raids and quests (which didn’t stop them carrying out a questionable election that Lion won), and gained a new colonist in late Priscilla’s father. Meanwhile the prosthetics surgery began with a couple of successful operations, but there’s a lot more still to do...

First thing, Sky’s questing party has finally returned to the base with the two new prisoners. Sky and Emu will finally be able to get some proper treatment for their sensory mechanites now they’re back home.

For those who don’t recall, the sensory mechanites are odd things that cause a fair amount of pain and tiredness, but actually boost the senses. The colony does have a painstopper it could install in one of their brains, but probably they ought to just be healed.

It’s not the only thing Emu’s dealing with, of course. With his brain damage and anxiety you wouldn’t even notice some of the mechanites’ benefits.

Jay managed not to contract any mechanites, but is still healing from the fight at the stash location.

So too are the prisoners. This fairly young man who should be able to heal to normal...

And this older woman who would be alright, but seems to have a pre-existing issue with her heart. If she did join the colony, Zeiph could probably make her a new heart, but they’ve had prisoners get themselves killed trying to break out before...

At the base they completed a new room for off-world trading, mostly in order to buy the necessary ingredients for prosthetics. Ships haven’t been that common so far, but it can be useful.

Emu continues to have... issues. It’s hard to tell how much of the problems he causes are down to his personality or the brain damage, since the brain damage happened before he joined the colony. Maybe they can do something to fix it?

Of course one of the things that they brought back was a brain stimulator, and Julio got it in safely, but it doesn’t seem to have fixed the brain injury itself. We’ll have to see what has changed when he’s awake again...

Meanwhile Julio heads off to do some hopefully simpler work, trying to cure Henry’s anxiety (again)...

Emu’s woken up and although a lot of his stats still don’t look good, they are better than when he arrived back. Perhaps if his anxiety is cured as well...?

Henry’s anxiety is cured! Less work for Jethro, her therapy dog. Now she just needs a new ear installed...

One anxiety down, and now it’s Lion’s turn...

Cured! Though, as I recall, she only developed anxiety after the last move, and they probably will move again shortly...

Installing new ears is riskier, but hopefully Julio’s had a good warm-up fixing anxieties, because we don’t want to lose original colonists to surgery...

Henry has made it through safely! Her ear (and the others Zeiph has prepared for himself and Dead) aren’t as advanced as the one Lion received, but they don’t need it so much as she did and it’s expensive to upgrade them.

Now it’s Dead’s turn to receive her ear...

Another safe surgery! Julio’s doing good work right now, despite his frailty, but that’s not a guarantee so we shouldn’t get complacent...

Bellerose has been pretty quiet in the background, but in absence of sufficient bedrooms, he’s been given space next to his daughter’s sarcophagus and memorial statue. He doesn’t seem too disturbed by it.

There’s an even more significant prosthetic underway, planned for Eri’s receipt, and this will probably be the real test of Julio’s skill, replacing her entire spine...

Apparently Steroid isn’t a fan of how kind a person Morales is, but he’s apparently not so kind that he won’t throw hands in the freezer!

As though the hospital wasn’t busy enough with all the surgeries going on.

But Steroid and Morales will be forced to endure each other’s company until their bruises heal.

And now Eri is in for her spine surgery. Can Julio pull it off?

During all the tension, somebody seems to be trying to help by dropping more prosthetics - but they don’t really need wooden feet.

The spine implant was a success! This could be very useful when they move, so Eri can better keep up with the others.

Eri’s in a better state than she was, but she could use a new kidney as well, and that’s surely easier than installing a whole spine.

So Eri’s soon back under the knife...

Ah. Well, I did say we shouldn’t get complacent. Kind of a waste of a good bionic spine though, if she was going to die getting a new kidney put in...

The first death since Priscilla’s and some people were on edge enough as it was, it’s not good for morale, or Morales especially.

That’s a very... shady sarcophagus Jay’s created for her, basically illustrating her death and blaming Julio (which, yes, it was him, but not deliberately). In any case, Eri is laid to rest, so I guess it’s montage time.

*Generic unlicensed sad music*
You know, I’d gotten used to my conception of Eri as a slightly frail older woman doddering around, but she actually first came to the colony as part of a raiding party from the Combat Society pirates.

She was the only survivor of her party, and ironically it was during that fight that her eventual death, her missing kidney, was caused. But she was taken prisoner back at the first base.

She joined at the beginning of the new base, when all hands were on deck to get things set up. She didn’t talk in detail about her past, but once she had apparently been a standard innocent shopkeeper, but wound up imprisoned for crimes untold before escaping, probably by mining her way out with a crafted shovel.

She was with the colony for almost exactly a year and a half. Her skills didn’t change much in that time, but she helped defend the colony when necessary, and mostly her work was keeping the place clean. There’s no skill for that, but everyone else would have been a lot more upset (and potentially ill) without her doing it.

Rest in Peace, Eri. At least she died unconscious, in no pain, probably entirely unaware of her death to the end.

I’m not sure if I’m surprised that Zeiph has the guts to be the next under the knife following Eri’s death, but he crafted this ear, so he intends to receive it.

His faith in Julio is rewarded; the ear is implanted safely. To be fair to Julio, he’s had many more successes than failures.

Then it’s back to Emu again, hoping to cure more anxiety and get him working better.

It worked, but Emu’s still not ideal, and it’s hard to tell how much is still his brain injury or the mechanites. They’ll just have to keep treating those.

Mayor Lion knows how to raise people’s moods following a death, though there’s no formal funeral for poor quiet Eri.

For all the time that some of these people have spent together, the colonists aren’t generally very close or cohesive. Lion’s generally doing the best, but having a partner and one friend is not a high standard of social group. At least no fight is breaking out over the election last quadrum.

A trade offer is made, but from what I can tell the colonists are hoping to move soon, not spend a lot of resources creating guns for another group.

And then there quickly followed another request, to destroy a raider camp. Vas might be interested in an opportunity for a fight, and maybe a persona core in Emu’s head might improve him? Just a thought.

With not much to do while the colony prepares to move, Vas takes some of the fighters out to get the AI Persona Core.

The journey to and from will take them beyond the end of the season, but hopefully it will be worth it.

Meanwhile Emu’s recovered from the sensory mechanites, and the brain stimulator hasn’t made anything better than would be normal and left a number of aspects still subpar. Hopefully he’ll still prove useful somehow.

Perhaps one day the combat pirates will realise that one of them cannot take on a full party, but it certainly hasn’t happened yet.

There’s more than one attacker back home though, with more variation of weapons this time. We know grenades can be dangerous...

Dead is dead! The prophecy is fulfilled! She looked like she was going for the grenadier, but she was ganged up on by the melee fighters and the battering must have just overwhelmed her body! The past few victories must have made complacent, the first of our original colonists to die...

The fight is still going though, and it’s enough to make you wonder whether the quest Vas went on was some kind of deliberate lure to get the best melee fighters away from the base! Lion is downed but still alive, our colonists are doing their best to fend them off...

And Kilo decides this is an opportune moment to give birth to another husky puppy, this time a girl, the father is Wildwood again.

The fight is finished, and no more colonists died. Matvei the deer even lent a hoof...

In the absence of most of the melee fighters, most of the damage was by the various gunners...

There is one survivor though, and he’s close enough to the base to potentially save and recruit.

Plenty of damage to the colonists as well, though thankfully Emu hasn’t gone any more permanent damage to set him back...

Henry’s not too bad...

Steroid’s never really had to be in a fight before, but all the damage should heal...

He couldn’t not fight when his wife was so involved though - Lion took a lot of beating, but there’s no external bleeding at least.

Matvei actually took the worst damage, losing an ear and bleeding quite a lot, but Sky will fix him up.

Meanwhile Lucya fixes up the new prisoner. They need to start looking to replace the people they’ve lost this quadrum...

And they start very quickly! Prisoner Gazelle chooses to join the colony rather than be outnumbered by male prisoners now. She’s a very promising fighter and has skill as a medic, though pyromania is less than ideal.

And then Dead is laid to rest in the same chamber as Priscilla and Eri. I can’t say I really appreciate Julio’s choice of what to portray on Dead’s tomb; no glorious battle like on Priscilla’s, just one time when she got too hot in summer and was sweaty. For some reason this image apparently stuck in Julio’s memory, which makes me very dubious.
Anyway, we definitely have to montage for the original colonists...

*Sweeping, actually licensed, sad music*
Elisabeth Dead, of course, actually chose to go to this planet for this challenge (and signed all of the waivers, remember). An ex-music teacher, she had wanted to embrace a different side to her life and existence, and she certainly did.

She survived three and a half years on Duster, with the ominous fact of her own name hanging over her, but she survived. She lost an ear just half a year in, and a finger after a year, but she kept going.
Her skills didn’t grow nearly so well as her fellow original colonists’, but she was vital early on for her (relative) skill with plants, and she was keen to get in on the fights to protect the colony - too keen at the end.

Rest in peace, Elisabeth Dead. Hopefully her father might find her resting place one day, and her friend Lion will miss her. Maybe if Henry and Zeiph make it through this, they’ll create a monument to her too.

Hopefully people will be recovered enough to feel like gathering.

Meanwhile Julio, being the best medic and interested in crafting, has decided to start on a new heart for Gazelle to try and protect her from the minor artery blockage she already has. Perhaps best to take the chance because she becomes too invaluable to the colony.

Elsewhere Vas’ party finally arrived at their location up in the mountains. There are several combat pirates, but they aren’t too well armed.

It’s difficult to fend off automatic weapons with just a coat and a sword.

Even with a flak jacket, they didn’t stand much of a chance. One of their friends escaped though, as the battle went south for them.

It’s not the most technologically advanced place, but they were able to loot a new turret for the home base.

And then they start heading home, taking even longer than it took them to get there. Hopefully the home base won’t be raided again by the time they get back...

And before we end the quadrum, we’ll review the various factions. Naturally nothing changes with the Combat Society pirates, but the colony’s somewhat positive with everyone else, especially the Accord of Inmenin. Hopefully it will benefit them somehow.
Final Stats:
Eri: Surgeried to death :(
Dead: Beaten to death :((
Gazelle: Recruited, due to receive a new heart
Julio: Throwing shade at people on their graves
Henry: No longer anxious and now with two ears!
Zeiph: Two ears!
Lion: No longer anxious!
Emu: Possibly as good as he’s going to get now?
Colony: Minus 2 colonists, recruited 1, gained a prisoner.

Good to know! No way I’m doing my Rimworld posts from a phone anyway, desktop aaaalllllll the way.
@staff are you fucking kidding me right now?! You’re limiting text posts to 100 text blocks (aka paragraphs). What the absolute fuck.
Since you couldn’t take out fanfic writers with the purge so you’re just fucking up formatting for text posts until they leave? Is that your plan?

Duster Part 13: Quadrum 13

Last time was actually fairly quiet (which doesn’t usually bode well) - Lion and Steroid got married, and real progress was made on prosthetics research and Zeiph actually made some. But will colonists survive receiving them...?

The quadrum has barely begun when a transport pod crash lands towards the edge of their region! The colony’s pretty large already, but there’s space in the hospital right now to rescue somebody. And, hang on a minute, his name is Bellerose?

Yes! It is literally Priscilla’s father! Well, if he came here deliberately, looking for his daughter, he’s a quadrum and a half too late for that unfortunately...

For anybody who’s forgotten, the last remaining prisoner is still suffering with an infection and it isn’t looking good. The colonists are giving him better quality medicine now, but it could be a close thing...

The colonists are informed of an item stash! It does look pretty good; there are several colonists who could use glitterworld medicine to fix their anxieties, and the last techprof subpersona core really saved some research time on the multi-analyser. Perhaps they’ll send out a party if nothing drastic happens in the meantime.

An election! It had been so long since the last one at the previous settlement that I’d forgotten they like to have these. Interesting that neither of the previous candidates have run again. And Lion and Steroid are running against each other! Let’s see what their respective policies are...

Not bad, Steroid seems to be running on a platform of equality, freedom and advancement. He’s also the only person with a family member in the colony, so perhaps Vas will give him a boost...

Perhaps not surprisingly, Lion’s platform has some similarities to her husband’s, though she sounds tougher in decisions and kinder to the ‘weakest members’. Lion’s also the longest resident of the colony who’s running, so perhaps that will help her out.

Frenchy sounds alarmist, arrogant and elitist, but he’s meant to be good at social, so maybe he’ll be able to sell it to the others? Elitism didn’t work well for Zeiph last time...

Emu... Emu can’t possibly win, surely. He’s been in the colony less than one quadrum, his noted traits are ‘annoying voice’ and ‘misogynist’, and he’s known for his brain damage from his last escape attempt. I can’t imagine he would win.

I’m quite surprised Lucya is running, given how quiet she tends to be, and she’s a night owl so people hardly see her a lot of the time. She might not be the worst option, and she’s the second longest resident of the colony running. Perhaps she has a chance?
It’ll be interesting to find out who wins!

Argh, the prisoner reached 98% immunity, but just couldn’t hold out. Oh well, he was trouble enough while he lasted, though his combat skills would have been useful.

Kilo has given birth to the first husky puppy! Little Homer’s father has turned out to be Raider. Still hoping that she might give Jethro a puppy someday.

Priscilla’s father has chosen to join the colony and, er, cannibalism apparently?! Perhaps it’s my privileged urbworld naivety, but some of these people and families boggle the mind.
In any case, he’s another scholar for the colony, has some promise at medicine and also mining for some reason, but he will not fight. Maybe he’ll replace Julio at being chased around by small wild animals. I’m not sure if he’s a worthy addition to the colony necessarily, but the colonists might feel too bad after what happened to Priscilla to push him out.

A ship passes by in nearby space, with the option to sell a few animals. They do offload a few of the muffalo, probably thinking of the silver required to get more plasteel and components for prosthetics. And to prevent more inbreeding when the time comes.

A raid! And using transport pods, our colonists haven’t faced this before. Perhaps they’ll have more advanced weapons as well?

Here’s the first batch - all equipped with throwable explosives...

And the second batch, also with explosives! Of course those can be very dangerous, but they’re also not much use if the colonists can get in melee range. Fingers crossed that nobody gets badly exploded...

Speaking of melee, Vas quickly dispatches one of the most dangerous raiders, and the fellow raider quickly flees faster than the burdened Nobreitra can catch him.

The other colonists have more trouble with the other batch of raiders, and Jay gets set on fire while Dead goes in to melee the one hiding furthest back.

Dead made short work of this one...

And made this one shorter by a head!

This one’s still alive, but full of bullets. If they try to take him prisoner it could be very touch-and-go for him not to bleed to death first...

Not everybody was fighting during all this - the prosthetics research continues, with the ability to make internal organs! Certainly Eri’s missing a kidney, they may be able to fix that soon!

Dead took a few hits, but she’s fine, perhaps thanks to all her armour nowadays.

Jay only took one injury, but it’s a severe one that’s probably not going to be fixed until if/when she loses the whole hand. She’s certainly proved her bravery and dedication in her first battle for the colony though!

This guy will never get that chance - Zeiph couldn’t patch him up in time, and he was getting infected anyway. He was indeed disposable.

The colonists receive a new quest, in return for a bunch of prosthetics! I don’t doubt they’ll look into this, especially following the jade meteorite they had.

Before any of that, though, the colonists feel ready to try putting in some of the new prosthetics. Nobreitra’s first, missing an eye, and one of the more replaceable of the recipients just in case it turns out Julio isn’t safe operating with these home-made prosthetics...

It worked! And well! The first of Zeiph’s prosthetics seems to be a resounding success, and Nobreitra should soon be fit and well to go out on quests as one of the colony’s better fighters.

Before the next surgery can even get underway, the colony’s sent another quest! They’ve never had healer mech serum, but it certainly sounds highly useful, because not all of the conditions the colonists have are curable. Getting rid of Julio’s frailty would be a big help for the surgeries.

Unsurprisingly, the next to volunteer is Lion, who jumps at the chance for more prosthetics, and to get her right ear back. Of course, the other people missing ears are our original colonists, and just because Julio succeeds sometimes doesn’t mean he always will...

Fortunately this is another one of his successes! Lion’s no longer missing any parts, and one side of her head is much better than the other.

Not that she’s satisfied, of course. She’ll always take more parts, given the chance. Though whether her husband wants her to risk going under the knife any more than she already has...

With mostly everyone recovered, the colonists look into the quests - and you can see how much Nobreitra and Lion’s prosthetics have upped their values.

Two parties are sent out - Vas’ mostly fighter party is going west to get the stash they were informed of at the beginning of the quadrum, and Sky’s more diplomatic party is going north to trade the jade. The Healer Mech Serum is also approximately north, so they may wind up looking into that as well if they aren’t attacked on the way.

While they’re off journeying, a heat wave sets in at the base. Not that it tends to be much of an issue for the colony nowadays, as the colonists spend most of their time under the mountain or in air-conditioned rooms.

Vas’ party got to their location swiftly, and honestly it was disappointingly easy. All items obtained, nobody even got hurt. I expect Vas and Nobreitra were looking forward to a fight.

These seem like some very suspect election shenanigans, when nearly half the colony is away on missions. Including one of the candidates, even! Well, if you can really consider Emu a candidate.

Well, whoever did get to vote probably made the right decision, though the fact that she won with 3 votes out of 17 people (7 of whom were away) isn’t that ringing an endorsement. It’s not even a third of the people who were still there. Oh well, judging by last time she’ll lose the job when they move locations, which they probably will fairly soon.

9th of Septober and Vas’ party makes it back home, slowed by Nobreitra getting food poisoning on the way. The colony has more glitterworld medicine available now...

Poor Nobreitra. I wasn’t kidding about the food poisoning, and it’s hit him hard. The problem is actually with Emu, who is generally so bad at everything that he’s been allowed to do the things he’s interested in - including cooking. Which has clearly affected the quality of the food the party took with them on their quest...

Well, this is new. But there’s not much to be done when both Sky and Emu are still off travelling. Sky will just have to deal with it as best they can. Could this be the fault of bad cooking too?

It’s taken a long time, but Sky’s party finally reaches their destination to fulfil the trade, and maybe pick up some more things on offer, particularly plasteel and advanced components.

Of course as soon as they set back out again, the pirates hone in on their valuables...

This party may not be the fighting-est, but it doesn’t take much against one pirate!

Then they arrive at the healer mech serum stash...

The coast looks clear, and we can take this opportunity to check out these sensory mechanities. Strangely, though they are painful and tiring, they actually improve the hosts senses. That could almost be useful?

It turns out the coast is not clear. It’s three vs three, but our colonists might be better equipped?

Jay is downed! And that pirate is making off with the serum, abandoning her pirate accomplices! The colonists are not going to catch her at her speed... Frustrating.

Sky tends to Jay’s mostly superficial wounds, while the remaining pirates cry for help on the sand. Looks like there will be some prisoners to take back at least...

Emu patches the prisoners up while the others rest for the night. The prisoners look to be an elderly woman and a younger man, but they have to get back to the base safely first.

Speaking of the base, they have their own troubles, with the largest raiding party we’ve seen so far. I guess it’s nice to know that they include their elderly in activities? No such thing as retirement here...

The colonists jump in to try and get the better of them before they get too close to the base and more defenseless members...

It doesn’t take too much to scare them into fleeing back where they came from, and as usual at least some of the raiders outpace our colonists.

Not all of them, though.

Dead did most of the damage to this one too. Remember when Dead was a music teacher? Are any of her old students out there watching this?

This one looks to have been dispatched by Vas...

This one too...

Vas really gets through them.

Vas again, but the shooters do play their part.

Now to survey our colonists’ own damage: Frenchy got stuck into his own first fight, taking some shots, but hopefully no lasting damage.

Dead only took a bruise from a pistol whip...

Vas took a bit of melee damage, but he gave a lot more than he got. It will be a worrying day if/when the colony loses Vas.

Morales took one shot to the leg, but he should be fine.

Lion should also be fine, if she will go and lie down so she can be treated before she bleeds out from that shot to her torso.
And with that the quadrum ends! There weren’t as many prosthetic operations as there might have been, but also nobody died, and some quests have been safely completed. Hopefully next time will have fewer raids and more successful surgeries!
Final Stats:
Nobreitra: Has two eyes again!
Lion: Has two ears again! And is mayor!
Jay: Lost a finger by burning
Bellerose: Recruited and reunited with his daughter! ... Sort of?
Emu & Sky: Sensory mechanites?
Vas & Zeiph: Invaluable
Julio: Hoping his surgical luck holds out!
Colony: Gained one colonist, lost one prisoner, gained two other prisoners, sold a few nameless animals

Just wanted to say I love your blog! I've been obsessing over Rimworld lately so your blog is perfect for me lol. Keep up the good work :)
Awww, thank you! This is just the kind of positivity I need right now. I would have done another part by now but my eyes are still adjusting to the new Tumblr blue and I couldn’t keep staring at it. Hopefully I’ll finish it soon! <3

The problem with playing Rimworld as a disabled person is it gives your brain a really unrealistic idea of easy it could be to fix you. Like, pffft, just get a synthetic replacement and stick it in there! How hard can it be? And if you’re not sure where the issue is, just replace everything until the problem goes away!

Duster Part 12: Quadrum 12

Last time the colonists decided to open that mysterious chamber in the mountain, losing one life and several body parts. But also a couple got engaged! Will there be a marriage this quadrum, and will they get far enough to start making prosthetics?

Firstly it seems that the one female husky has gotten pregnant, though we can’t be certain which of the three male huskies will be the father yet. Given everything that Jethro has suffered, it would be nice for him to get a pup or two if possible. Perhaps they could replace him as Henry’s service dog if anything worse happens to him?

And now it’s wedding time already! It’s coinciding with a solar flare so the base has interesting mood lighting for the occasion. Zeiph and Lucya are sleeping from their night shifts, but hopefully they’ll get up for the ceremony itself.

Vas and Morales aren’t such romantics, but everybody else stood close to watch.
It’s nice and all, but does anybody else feel more tension with this happening where it is? How long until something terrible happens to one of them?! It would be a wonderful story if they could make it safely off the planet at the end of the series, but that’s a lot easier said than done... Feels more likely this footage will wind up in one or both of their death montages.

Perhaps there’s good cheer going around, because that evening they manage to convert one of the three prisoners, making them colonist fifteen. Green Jay seems to have a pretty typical tribal background, but has some useful passions and some ability at shooting, so they could come in handy.

Meanwhile, as mentioned, the prosthetics research is really coming along. We have four missing ears, one missing eye, and one missing kidney that could all do with replacing. Safely, if possible...

Blight’s broken out amongst the animal fields, but fortunately they’re a long distance away from most of the colonist crops and it isn’t spreading that far. They’ve got plenty of bales of hay too, so the animals should be fine.

The colonists have also figured out how to build a communicator to trade with ships off world - but don’t get any ideas, audience; this is a dangerous area of space to meddle with. Anyway, they’re also building a storage area for things they want to trade, though they may not need to as much once they’re crafting their own prostheses.

Speaking of which, Zeiph is working on a replacement ear for one of the four candidates, and being invaluable to the colony in general. Though it turns out this stuff is not cheap, and they’ll probably need to trade just to get the necessary plasteel and components to build more.
It’ll also be interesting to see who gets this implant, as all four of the oldest colonists are missing an ear. Lion is always happy to get a prosthetic and isn’t one of the originals, but she’s married and Steroid would probably be devastated to lose her in surgery. But are our original colonists willing to risk death to regain a bit more hearing? I guess we’ll see.

Another research done, and another quandary, because this means somebody could receive the painstopper they have in storage, but who should get it? A lot of colonists have some pain from old scars... Maybe one of the fighters?

The new research bench and multi-analyser are just charging through these technologies, with Frenchy in the day and Zeiph often at night. The colony could be getting close to moving on again, but perhaps it would be worth staying just to keep getting these researches done? I’m not sure if they can carry all these benches on with them.

Another prisoner is won over, taking us to sixteen colonists now. Emu Trobo doesn’t look to be ideal. He has some medical skill but doesn’t seem to like it, his personality looks to be terrible, and you may recall that he’s got some brain damage from the escape attempt last quadrum. Perhaps the colony can use some cannon fodder?

The colony gets a trade request and, hold on a minute, I’m not sure what bluefur is... Muffalo pelts? That’s a lot of muffalo pelt, too. Not sure how many muffalo they’d have to kill for that. None of the colonists are super bonded with any of the muffalo, but I don’t think they have the heart for that.

This is the state of the animals, by the way. I suppose I can see why they might think the colony might be willing to rid itself of some of the muffalo. You can also see that the only pregnant animal now is Kilo the husky, so the gender separation has worked!

Huh. A whole meteorite made of jade. That should be worth some value, maybe they can trade some off-planet?

Welcome back to another installment of Julio getting helplessly chased around by wild animals. The pig’s already taken a shot from Zeiph’s gun, but it’s still gaining on Julio...

Somehow he managed to let the pig into the base behind him too. This might have been amusing, but Julio is still the colony’s best medic and they’ll probably need him if they want to safely install the prostheses, so hopefully somebody will intervene shortly.

That’s a lot of injuries, though they shouldn’t be permanent. At least it wasn’t a rabbit this time. Perhaps they shouldn’t let Julio out of the base at all.

Between all the cleaning, Henry’s still been working on art, and we know what this very touching piece is going to end up next to...

Oh dear, it seems that some people never learn... Just as the colonists are getting close to converting him too.

Ugh, looks like there might be a second order for a prosthetic eye. I don’t know what the guy expected, though he made it slightly further than last time, at the expense of an eye and a lot of blood.

And this is the guy who got infected twice before, so of course he’s infected again. Hold on... I’m being told that missing a kidney makes that more likely, so maybe that’s why, but his luck could run out one day!

More prosthetics research done. If you’re going to risk your life, you would want the best!

And Zeiph is determined to deliver the best to whoever winds up getting this ear.
And that’s the end of the quadrum! A quiet one after all the drama last quadrum, a good recovery time for the colonists to get fixed up and maybe think about their next base. But will people survive receiving Zeiph’s shiny new prostheses next time? We’ll see!
Finals stats:
Henry: Such art, so skilled
Zeiph: Building prosthetics!
Frenchy: SCIENCE!
Steroid: Married!
Lion: Married! Also: give her the prosthetics. All the prosthetics.
Lucya: Would also like prosthetics.
Nobreitra: Just a new eye would be great, thanks.
The colony overall: Gained two colonists, and a lot of research

Duster Part 11: Quadrum 11

Last time we lost a bunch of footage to a solar flare, but the colony gained a bunch of animals, converted prisoner Nobreitra, and Lion and Steroid got into the colony’s first relationship! Where will things go from there...?

With the base far more established, the colonists are getting back on the art to decorate people’s bedrooms. Henry and Priscilla are the main talents in this respect, and they have loads of stone blocks to use from hollowing out the mountain

There appears to be some kind of room in the southern part of the mountain, and the colonists have been hearing noises from inside. Our sources have told us that there can be dangerous things in rooms like this, which the colonists also seem to have heard, as they seem to be creating an entrance as limited and far from the base as they can...

Yes, the colonists certainly look prepared for a fight, as brawler Vas (who has a shield belt nowadays) goes in to break open the wall...

We can see inside! I see an implant, advanced components, some risky luciferium and... oh dear, we recognise a lancer from when Lisa died, and our sources tell me the other is a ‘scyther’, known for decapitating (parts of) people...! Are the colonists ready for this?

Those mechanoids move fast, Vas is barely outrunning them back to the firing line! Henry and Zeiph, two of the most important colonists, have backed up to a slightly safer distance...

The scyther has honed in on Morales (who wasn’t even supposed to be there!) and he is not holding up well - he better retreat to the hospital before he loses anything more vital than a finger...!

The scyther took a lot of hits, but it has been finished, in time for Morales to stay alive...

And Vas goes back in to take down the Lancer, shattering some key parts. Incredibly, everybody’s still alive!

Morales took a few more cuts and is downed, but the only thing he’s definitely lost is a finger, and hopefully he should have time to be taken to the hospital and get patched up...

Yup, Henry’s grabbed and tended to him, so saving infection the rest of his body should be alright, but it’s got to be awfully painful. If he never sees one of those things again, I’m sure it’ll be too soon.

That implant in the room turns out to be a painstopper, and I could see a fight breaking out over this! Doesn’t matter for now though, the colonists don’t have the scientific knowledge necessary for brain surgery like that would require.

Interesting timing, but good news: Steroid and Lion are planning to get married! I suppose you have to take what chances you get in this situation and on this planet; you never know how long either of you will survive!

And more good news: more huskies to keep Jethro company! Only one of them is female, but I could see more breeding happening. Still, Jethro’s been incredibly useful, so perhaps a few litters can help protect the colony...

They all have names too - where did they come from and what happened to their former owners? I can only assume nothing good... But one of those names is going to get confusing: turns out the only good Raider is a husky.

With the mechanoids out the way, the colonists decide to chance opening the pods in the room. They’re playing it safe with weapons; rumour has it sometimes mechanoids are stored in the pods as well...

They’re all human - but some of them are immediately pulling their weapons (or drugs)...?!

We don’t know why they’re attacking, but the colonists have no choice but to defend themselves! The attackers are very well equipped though...

Nobreitra’s lost an eye! And so soon after the archotech eye was given to Lion! He’s going to need to retreat and get treatment for that pretty quickly...!

Priscilla is dead! Her steel plate armour could not protect her head from all the gunfire! I can’t believe they made it through the mechanoids alive, only for somebody to be killed by the humans!

Zeiph comes to help and Vas has finished off a second of the attackers...

Even Dead had to be called in with her shield belt, the attackers were just too strong without melee.

They’re all dead now, with Zeiph managing to even shoot this one’s head off. I don’t understand why they immediately attacked on being freed? Were they imprisoned against their wills and assumed the colonists were their captors? We’ll probably never know...

Nobreitra made it to the hospital safely to be treated, but the colony’s going to have to find another eye for him somehow...

The colony gets a request for helpin the middle of this, but it’s really badly timed, and they’re not even offering any implants or prosthetics, so I doubt it’s going to happen...

Vas winds up in a bed next to where Morales is still recovering from the mechanoids, but Vas isn’t too badly injured. He’s actually mostly suffering with food poisoning.

And this is the way the room has been left, which also turns out to be the most convenient place to lay Priscilla to rest, though it needs some cleaning.

And Julio’s carved her a beautiful sarcophagus honouring her memory as a badass. Looks like it’s montage time...

*Pretty and mournful unlicensed music*
Priscilla Bellerose joined the colony on 10th of Septober 5501, about a year and a half ago. Three colonists died in the rescue (including young Beryl, who had just overcome his addiction), all for want of somebody who could do medicine, which unfortunately she couldn’t.

She had a big personality and a pretty face from her celebrity youth, but her biggest use to the colony was as part of the away team with her ex-lover Vas and medic Morales, completing quests and trades for the good of the colony. She wasn’t somebody you wanted to be up against in a fight.

In that year and a half she learned well and became very valuable to the colony with how passionate she was about nearly everything. It’s hard to believe she died to some angry and confused humans, but she did take an awful lot of bullets before she went down. If the colonists learn anything from this, hopefully it will be the need to get themselves some proper protective headgear.
Rest in peace, Priscilla Bellerose, c5452 - 5th Aprimay 5503. Hopefully your husband won’t hate the colony for your loss.

The colonists are going to have their own day of remembrance in a few days, assuming nothing goes too wrong in the meantime...

Anyway, back to business: a random buck decides to join the colony. Hopefully it will have better luck than the ibex ram, but I wouldn’t hold your breath...

Hmmm! The Leobrin of the Brook seems to finally be seeing sense in not sending its tribepeople to die against our colonists’ guns. Assuming it’s not an attempted trap, it sounds like a good idea to me!

But then this happens swiftly afterwards! And our colonists have yet to reject anybody fleeing in their direction...

We have a new thirteenth colonist! Hauke Pahl is a young man and not particularly skilled, but at least there’s nothing that he’s not willing to do around the colony...

And here come the tribespeople on his tail, all equipped with melee weapons. Only issue for the colonists is that it’s still early morning and not all of them are awake...

Of course there is the turret - or there was the turret. Most of them managed to back off before it exploded, but one of them was too close and has died already. Unfortunately the colonists don’t know how to build turrets themselves yet, so it’ll be a while before they can replace it.

Zeiph has been downed! You forget how much damage people can do, especially at close range. And he’s joined the other three earliest colonists in having an ear destroyed, though this is his left - seems the women lose the right and the men lose the left! Really need to get some replacement ears for our colonists, but hopefully now the other colonists are getting out of bed there won’t be any more body parts lost...!

With all the tribespeople down or dead, let’s survey the damage! This one went the same way as old Vladimir did - shredded apart by an exploding turret...

This one took too many bullets and stabs, though it’s not clear which one finished her...

But the other three have all been taken alive and stuffed into the prison cell with Frenchy, who doesn’t seem too impressed.

They’re all quite badly wounded though. This older man is apparently a healer, and you can never have too many of those...

This one’s a fighter, which the colony could really use after the loss of Priscilla...

This one doesn’t seem as good, but sometimes the colony needs to take what it can get.

The only colonist badly hurt was Zeiph, but except for his left ear he should be alright. I’m sure he’d like somebody to clean the hospital though; that’s not his vomit around the bed.

I think Vas likes to pretend he didn’t care about Priscilla since they broke up however long ago, but we’ve caught him sneaking in here alone to visit her resting place. Old feelings probably die hard.

And the colony gains its fourteenth colonist! Frenchy’s not that impressive in most ways, but he’s very good at social and very promising at intellectual! The colony hasn’t achieved a lot research-wise since leaving the last base, but perhaps that will change soon?

Back in the prison things aren’t looking so positive, as one of Val’s injuries, given by a husky, becomes infected. Just as well we have so many medics around...

And then the bullet wound in his shoulder gets infected too! Just as well the colonists want a fighter, if they’re going to be this much trouble! At least he’s in a clean new bed now.

Unfortunately with all the excitement the colonists never got around to cleaning up this chamber before Priscilla’s funeral. Still, most of them went to hang out and chat about old times. Vas stayed away, given that he’s already visited and probably still wanting to appear like he didn’t care...

The next day perhaps tensions were running high, as there was perhaps the first ever social fight in this colony! I’m not sure Sky should be taking on Nobreitra...

But Sky won! To the point of pulling his pistol on Nobreitra! There’s no way the colony would let murder slide, he better put that away!

Away from that drama, our hopes have come true! The colonists finally learnt how to make a more sophisticed research bench, and used an old AI core they got from a quest to learn how to make a multi-analyser too! Perhaps they can learn to make their own prosthetics now...?

With things calmed down, a party is formed to go to those peace talks, with Frenchy and his social skills replacing Priscilla in the away party form, for this quest at least.

One of the good things about the hospital is that after fights like that one, colonists are forced to spend time together without being able to fight again. Hopefully Sky and Nobreitra can settle their differences and prevent it happening again.

Excellent! No more raids from Leobrin of the Brook, for now at least! Shame that those Combat Society pirates probably aren’t open to such negotiations...

This isn’t new, but most of the old footage was lost in the solar flare; the alpacas especially are very much inbreeding, to a bit of an unsettling degree. The one named alpaca is this baby’s nephew, uncle and cousin...

Buck 1 has gained a proper name now too! Would have been more useful for one of the animals of which the tribe has plenty, but I guess this buck just has more personality...

Sigh, the prisoners are trying to break out weaponless despite how easily they were beaten when they were armed. We’ll see if they even make it through this alive...

Well I suppose there’s some justice in the head plotter getting most badly injured, with a permanent injury to his brain. I can’t tell how badly this might affect his abilities, but you would assume it would to some degree?

This one’s bleeding more, but probably not as permanent. ... I missed which colonist bit her right leg - Henry has a melee weapon, so I assume not her? Strange.

This one’s had a kidney outright destroyed, but he wouldn’t be the first colonist to have that problem, he can live with just one. Hopefully they’ll all learn from this.

We’re late to another raid, this time by the Combat Society! The colonists got word ahead of time and ambushed them near the edge of the map. One of them’s already dead near the top there, but this is more people than the colonists have ever faced so far...

The animals are on hand, but it’s the bullets that have been doing the real damage so far...

The fight is won, but one of the raiders - the weakest probably - manages to flee faster than the colonists can catch her. I expect she’ll tell their bosses what happened, which may not be a good thing.

This one died mostly thanks to a husky...

This one took too many shots to the torso and internal organs...

This one took a lot of shots as well, including to the spine...

This one took a mix of bullets and husky attacks...

This one is still alive right now, but that’s not nearly enough time to get her back to the base and treated, so she will die shortly.

The boar did its best but really only wound up getting hurt, including a stab to the heart! The colonists look set to do their best to save her in time.

Jethro got beaten up once again, but he’s taken worse in the past and did very good work.

Raider the husky took worse, but again hopefully none of that should be permanent damage.

Not all threats to the colony are human, but at least electric shorts like this are easily put out.

Another incest baby alpaca is born. Hopefully these will tail off now that the male and female animals are fairly separated; the colony only needs so many.

And just before the quadrum ends, a random hare loses it and chases Julio around the base. This is why I will never understand the complete pacifism - when you can’t even put down something a tenth of your size that won’t stop biting you. Fortunately Hauke’s nearby with a machine gun, and Julio is saved from the monstrous small animal...
Final Stats!
Henry: Doing a lot of medicine lately
Jethro: Beaten up again
Zeiph: Lost an ear
Dead: Studying ferociously for prosthetics

Duster Part 10 - Quadrums 9+10

Last time the colonists reached their new colony location, and everyone and their mother had mental breakdowns (actually Zeiph and Vas didn’t, but close enough). They’ve begun building up their base, but are currently still sharing bedrooms and are not best pleased about it. Will they have some peace and quiet to get things together, or will there be trouble to distract them? Let’s find out...

Of course the first thing to happen is more animal pregnancies, but wait: that’s alpaca 3, the daughter of alpacas 1 and 2... so she’s pregnant by her father? I must admit I haven’t thought much about animals breeding, living on urb- and glitterworlds, but I thought they’d avoid that? Guess I was wrong...

Unfortunately the colonists are still suffering and moping about their sleeping situations. The builders better get onto it...
The cleaners too. Though I have to wonder why it doesn’t occur to them to actually do the things they want doing? Wandering about miserable and doing nothing only makes the work take longer...

The alpacas aren’t the only ones getting pregnant, but at least there’s more genetic diversity available to the muffalo than their own parents...

This is the whole base so far, by the way. You can see at the bottom right that some bedrooms have been carved into the mountain, though even still it’s three to a room so far, with three people still stuck out in the old barracks. They’ve got power going too, so hopefully they will be working by electric lighting soon, rather than refuelling torches all the time.
Now, this was the last of the footage that we backed up before a huge solar flare, which destroyed the rest of our footage for Septober and all of Decembary. Here’s some points that we recall, with some current (beginning of Aprimay) footage to help illustrate it:

Firstly, the base has now expanded to this. Currently every colonist who wants their own bedroom has their own bedroom in the mountain, which has four entrances/exits. Note there is also a hospital near the top right.

The hospital has come in useful, as it is where Julio has done (or at least attempted) several surgeries. Lion, being a transhumanist as she is, is thrilled to have received the archotech eye. There was actually nothing wrong with her previous eye, but the archotech eye wasn’t doing well in storage so they decided to risk putting it in somebody despite nobody needing it. Julio also tried to fix her anxiety but failed and stabbed her in the head? I don’t know, I’m not a doctor.
None of that is why she has an ear missing, by the way, she joined Henry and Dead in the missing-right-ear club thanks to a raider while she was on the way to complete a trade mission with...

Nobreitra, the thirteenth colonist, who you will recall was their prisoner the last you saw of him. He was won over and has a few useful skills.

Speaking of prisoners, they now have this guy after a bunch of raiders showed up and were mostly put down. They did have two casualties though: one of Nobreitra’s toes, and a baby muffalo (the bastards). This guy was not the one who killed the muffalo, I should hasten to add.

Speaking of the animals, there are rather more of them that there were, mostly due to breeding. However, towards the end of last season, somebody had the bright idea to keep the male and female animals in separate areas (which you can see behind that) so that hopefully they will stop breeding (as much).
Steroid has bonded with one of the young alpacas, naming him Aesop, and they have also picked up a wild boar who decided it likes the colonists.

Unfortunately we’ve lost footage of what they looked like, but the colonists did have some related visitors. First Vas and Steroid’s mother, Yoko Neemor, came by on her own as a visitor (she was a large lady and technically younger than Vas, having spent some time in stasis). We did not find answers as to why one of her sons is a vatgrown assassin and the other is a civil servant.

Also Priscilla’s husband came by as part of a caravan, but did not stay. He was well-built (Priscilla clearly has a thing for fighter-types), but his hair had gone grey and he did not look nearly as attractive as Priscilla does underneath that hat and flak jacket. Seems she’s unlikely to get back with Vas with her husband out there, not too far away.

Actually the most interesting thing to happen is the colony’s first relationship! I would not have pegged Lion and Steroid as a likely couple and it’s still early days, but I guess there’s something there. Lion’s older at 52 to Steroid’s 43, but the main thing that surprises me is that Steroid has had an ostensibly cushy life as a medical assistant and civil servant on a developed planet, and Lion’s lived her whole life in a tribe on this planet until she joined this colony: hard to think they have much in common. Still, as I recall, Lion was the one who went for Steroid, so I guess there’s something attractive about a civil servant to a tribal woman?

Otherwise, some quests were done, resulting in rewards above of a ‘techprof subpersona core’ and a synthetic lung. Unfortunately they can never get the prosthetics they really need: a bunch of (right) ears and a kidney. They did receive a supply drop at one point of a bunch of wooden feet, but sold them all on a trade mission because they didn’t need them.
And, as I recall, that is most of what we lost. We assure you all we’ll be more careful about backing up our footage next time, and will be back soon with what actually happens during Aprimay.
