Meztli WIP and facts!
Tumblr media
After doing many sketches and designs this is the one that i liked the most :D
I still have to rewrite her lore after all the Natlan mess and oh boy Natlan is fr a hot mess. But anyways, i'll try to explain some of the details for this design because i would love to share part of my culture!
Tumblr media
So let's start with the clothes. As you can see in the image above, there were many types of clothing depending on social status, festivities, and more.
For Meztli, I got inspired by noblewomen's clothing because she is one of them and a priestess (who often were noblewomen, but in some extraordinary cases, they could come from common families!). The more patterns or colors, the higher the status of the woman or man.
According to this picture, the Quechquémitl was used only during festivities, but that’s not entirely true. Yes, they wore it to represent goddesses during certain celebrations, but noblewomen also used it on a daily basis.
Tumblr media
As for hair, single women often wore their hair loose, although there is still debate about whether this was the same for noblewomen, as the Axtlahualli hairstyle (sometimes simply called "horns") was also worn by them.
This hairstyle consisted of a pair of twisted strands of hair, crossed at the nape of the neck, brought forward over the forehead, and secured with a cotton thread, simulating a pair of horns (hence the name). This was a common hairstyle among many Mexica/aztec women.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, these were the Cactles or Cactli. You can consider them a predecessor to huaraches/sandals, even though we don’t know exactly where they originated from. Most Mesoamerican cultures wore them, adding small details to differentiate one from another.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I forgot to add this one while i was drawing, but the Mexicas/Aztecs used nose rings as a symbol of status (only noble people could wear them). They were placed during a ceremonial event.
Nose rings acquired specific meanings depending on the material they were made of. In codex representations, some are even shown painted in colors, which obviously held specific meanings as well.
So, this is a bit of information about my design :D I'll share more details as i make progress, but in the meantime, feel free to ask any questions! I'll do my best to answer them, although there are some aspects that historians and archaeologists still don’t know or agree upon.

So, uh... I did Natlan's Archon quest and damn, the first part was kinda ok but the second part? Oh lord, that felt like an actual war and not like the inazuma one where everything felt so rushed and watered down.
Also, now i'll have to rewrite my oc's lore lol but nonetheless Natlan is giving so much lore right now even though it's a shame hyv sucks at representation

Meztli
Tumblr media
Ok so, first draft? I still have a lot to learn about aztec/mexica culture because unfortunately there isn't a lot of info about women daily life or even Pipiltin (noble) women but omg, it's so exciting to learn more things.
I will submit concepts and sketches as my research (and college) allows me to, but for now i'll drop some info about my girl.
Meztli is a bastard of one of the Tlatoani's daughters and a Fatui agent.
Once she was born she was separated from her mother.
Her grandparents passed her off as a distant relative so as not to tarnish the family's name.
Her grandmother's requested she was able to attend a calmécac (a school for the children of mexica nobles).
She was raised to be a priestess in hopes of erasing her "sins."
Her main interests are herbalism and divination.
Before dying, her mother told her the truth and who her father was.
She decided to flee Natlan in search of her father and answers.
So this is mainly her lore but it can change as i keep reading and/or Natlan Archon Quest develops, i hope you enjoyed :D

About Natlan...
So, the Natlan trailer is out and honestly… I'm disappointed.
I waited 3 years to see my culture represented but these character designs tell me nothing about pre-Hispanic culture or Latam culture as a whole and it's heartbreaking because the map and soundtrack are lovely.
Also, it's sad that some other Latinos are just like "there are white Latinos too." "At least we're getting represented." It's almost like they don't know their own culture. Seriously, do they think that just because a character is named "Citlali" (star in Náhuatl), that's enough?
Also this doesn't feel like genshin at all, why does nations like liyue, inazuma or fontaine have beautiful designs and are inspired on 1 or 2 countries while Natlan is based in TWO CONTINENTS is just like if hoyoverse said "Africa and Latam? Let's mix them together, they are both tropical continents after all"
And it makes me sad because i was planning on doing 2 OCs for natlan both dark skined and based on mexica/aztec and maya culture but seeing those hoyeverse designs… My OCs wouldn't fit their "aesthetic" and i refuse to see my culture used as an "aesthetic" once again from foreigners that don't even care to know and respect it.
Anyways, that's my rant for tonight, sorry but i had to share my thoughts
