I was going to write something just to vent some feelings, but it instead turned into this. Since it’s not even 500 words, I’m posting it here instead of AO3.

Midoriya Ayako is four years old when she gets told that the only thing keeping her from having a quirk is an extra joint in her pinky toe. She doesn’t understand the connection - what does a joint have to do with breathing fire like her dad or pulling items to her like her mum?

Midoriya Ayako is four years old when her best friend Bakugou Katsuki starts leaving her behind. She is stubborn. She will be faster so that they can be side by side. Kacchan calls her weak. She will be stronger so that he doesn’t have to protect her. She doesn’t understand why he insists that she can’t be a hero without a quirk.

Midoriya Ayako is fourteen years old when she meets All Might and gets told that she can’t become a hero without a quirk. She hasn’t accepted it before, and she won’t accept it now. She runs in to save Kacchan while the heroes only stand around. She doesn’t understand why they reprimand her for doing what they couldn’t - they’re the ones with quirks, yet they did nothing.

Midoriya Ayako is fourteen years old when All Might tells her that she can become a hero, and offers her to inherit his quirk. She refuses. She can save people without a quirk. She is fast, and she is strong, and she is stubborn.

Midoriya Ayako is fifteen years old when she is accepted to Yuuei’s Hero Course. She has spent eleven years working towards this. She will be a hero. She has no other identity.

Midoriya Ayako is fifteen years old when she looks into the mirror and has no idea who she is looking at. She can tell you her favourite hero but not her favourite song. She can tell you more about the heroes’ quirks than she can tell you about herself. She thinks that should change. She won’t be able to know who she is as a hero if she doesn’t know who she is as a person.

Midoriya Ayako is fifteen years old when she thinks that she might not be a she at all. She has always preferred her hair short with the reasoning that too long hair will get in the way when she’s a hero. She has never cared about what she wears as long as it allows her to move. She has worn sports bras since puberty set in since a flatter chest is more convenient. She uses ore more often than watashi when she speaks; have most likely picked it up by Kacchan but her mum has never said anything about it.

Midoriya Ayako is fifteen years old when she decides that he prefers to be Midoriya Izuku.
