“Representation matters.” Talk briefly about what that phrase means. How is it complicated when considering representation that harms (like the critique of Lee Daniels?) What is the “right” way to approach representation? Whose voices should be present? Give an example of what you consider positive representation of sexuality in the media.
Representation is so important we are supposed to be a mixing pot but then we shun communities. We use represensation to share all communities or even change policies for the better. It's hard to decide who gets to stand for the representation they deserve however it can be skewed or people may not agree fully with the person representing. How do we decide what should get representation? That is a harder question. If they are representating negative or harmful acts then they should be shut down, however freedom of speech may make it harder to shut down harmful communities. I think someone who has changed the idea of sexuality especially for LGBTQ+ would be Gigi Gorgeous. She is a YouTube who shared her story of how she transitioned. This was in a time where it was a taboo subject and she wanted to bring light to the hardships and just live her life as a normal person.
What, if anything, did you find surprising about the documentary A Jihad for Love?
I think it's mind blowing how the LGBT+ community is still not accepted. VCU is a hot spot for everyone to express themselves and you forget that other places are wildly opposite. It just makes me sad you can't love who you wanna love because of people opinions that don't bother them.
How is most representation of sexuality in PVMC centered on western whiteness and how does A Jihad for Love challenge that?
The story of jihad shows the beauty of the community past the hatefulness of cultures and people are I understand the world.
What assumptions about religion and sexuality does the documentary seek to dispel?
shows that just because you belong to a group of people that you aren't satanistic. LGBTQ+ can still be apart of any religion passed others beliefs.

The first thought that came to my mind was the Cheerios comercial That came out a few years ago. The couple was a interrational relationship and it was blow into some political agenda, meanwhile it was showing a normal family. The media has mass amounts of white influence and main characters are usually white. Then when we have a diverse cast it's praised when it should just be a normal thing in society. We shouldn't have to fight for representation all cultures are beautiful and should not be whitewashed. The beauty industry also is flagged with controversy, recently many brands have been under attacked for only providing foundation shades for lighter skin tones. The "normal" shade range had eight light skin tones and if you were lucky a "darker shade". Media is not always bad we have been able to provide the important information for you next generations about the unfair treatment of many races and cultures in specifically America.

What would an Intersectional approach to examining popular, visual, and media culture look like?
intersectional leads our lives everyday, all media is a story based usually on real life. when media is not accurate to the lives of people being represented the critism is high. It is so important for culture, gender studies, and representation in media to be accurate to covey the struggles and triumph of individual groups or persons. Thought it does not seem to cross our minds in ever aspect of media we have some an influence of cultures, genders, views of locational proportions.
How do our personal experiences shape the way we produce/consume media and visual experiences?
It is crazy how much influence we have on people. The people I think shape us the most on how we view the world is our guardians. from the day we are born they feed us the way we should view things. When we are younger we are told what we can't view. Kids that are raised in a harmful environment are more likely to consume media that relates to their surroundings, this will continue to circle of how media is consumed.
How does some popular media fail to account for varieties of lived experiences? Give an example. Does some popular media do a better job? Give an example of that as well.
instagram is a great example of failed varieties of life. The accounts that get recommended are usually bikini models or attractive girls to the standards of American industry. what is being shown to us is a small portion of real people. We don't often see beautiful cultures from around the world or how wonderful people are from different areas other than California and Florida. I like to think movies are the best at showing different people around the world with stories that may be dramatized but still have an important meaning. I think of movies like "The Help" , " West side Story" , and even in a weird wat "Tiger king".

How do you define popular, visual, media culture (PVMC)? What does it include? What are your most frequent interactions with PVMC?
popular is based on what a large group of people do to stay in the norm being the person/ people to follow a group. Visual sending a message based on the visual context. viewers usually have to interpret the art for themselves. media culture the way that we submerge ourself in media such as tv,media, and social media. The most frequent pvmc I think is social media. At any given time someone is on Instagram,Twitter, tiktok, etc.
What does it mean to be critical? How critically do you engage with the media you consume? In what ways? Is it possible to enjoy popular media while also having a critical eye?
critical is the way you judge things as a whole. I try my best to realize it's the internet and they people are braver to say things they wouldnt normally say and not taking it to heart. Yes you can enjoy media and have a critical eye. There is always room for improvement but still being able to appreciate media.

i am not an interesting person what so ever. i enjoy theater dance anything to do with art. My intended major is interior design which is still a work in progress. my pronouns are she/her. cats are infact the best pet and if anyone is interested in having a kitten i have three available and a mama cat, that my roommate and i rescued from outside soooo let me know.
when I think culture i think of what a group of people would do from a certain region. I don’t know if that makes much sense? culture can be described in so many ways but overall a way to bring a society together almost creating a family. I have never heard the term popular culture so im not sure what I would define that as. Based on the words and context clues creating a popular thing that anyone can participate in and spreading massively. This meaning its not based on where you come from but creating a societal norm. media is so important these days even if you don’t have Instagram or twitter it spread news like wildfire. The amount of information consumed is insane if comes with its pros and cons. I personally enjoy media I consume and produce media as in i post pictures to Instagram and venture onto all platforms.
