"it's what we keep saying, you know? it's been...a long time apart. so i...get it in a way." she sighed, looking him in the eyes. "and i am saving the punch i'm supposed to give you right now for a crucial moment later. you're not getting out of it forever." she added, resting her head on his shoulder. "i will want you forever, elijah roman. its what happens when you take someone's virginity, you didn't know?" she asked, playfully. she was happy to know there weren't any lingering feelings, that might have sent her over the edge."i'm not mad, really. i don't hate you. i guess i'm just more hurt that you weren't...waiting for me in all aspects. you were waiting for me emotionally, but you just..couldn't physically. now that i know, i can...start processing." she admitted, squeezing his hand lightly. "i know what happened to me while i was gone, i couldn't stop that. but you..chose to do this just because. and that's just...it hurts."

his eyes flickered back to the girl with such hurt on his own face. he felt terrible and heartbroken at the idea that he could make her feel that way and he did. this wasn't supposed to be like that, it wasn't supposed to happen. but he was prepared to deal with all repercussions. he listened intently to her as she spoke, lacing their fingers together. "no you do have a right to be angry. i would be angry. i'd probably punch me in the face right about now.. guess i'm wondering why that hasn't happened yet." he chuckled. elijah chuckled again at her age joke and shook his head slightly. "apparently you like them older. i don't know if there's a name for that but if there is that's you." he replied. he could've cried at the joy it brought him knowing that she was accepting and understanding. she really was better than him, than most. "phoenix, i want to be with you. only you." he told her honestly. "i love you. just you. -- yeah. they know about you, yeah. it's done, it was done the moment you got here. or pretty much when it started. i don't have any feelings for anyone else. like i told you when we met... i'll be here as long as you'll have me. want me." he answered. "nix, please just, punch me or something. i feel like you're taking this too easy. don't you hate me?"

"the door was open, and i let myself in." she spoke, as if it was the most casual thing in the world. "being an engineer seems like it's pretty crazy," she asked, moving out from behind ria's desk. "what's this one?" she asked, holding up one of the assignments in question.

"what are you doing with those?" ria's voice was stern as she questioned the person who was stood over her desk eyeing off her assignments provided to her by fedra. she still hadn't gotten to most of them, given she was one of the only engineers in the whole qz.

"that's what i said when this started. no way this just magically gets better in two weeks." she shook her head, walking alongside the girl. she examined the state of the qz already, worried for the future herself. "i'm okay for now, i want you to keep the stuff you've got. however, i'm seriously considering beating you up for the peaches. i love peaches."

open starter. location: the farm time: winter / event

the snow crunches loudly beneath her boots as she’s walking through the farmers area, examining all of the crops she’d worked so hard to keep alive, all frozen under the blanket of snow and ice. there was no way the canned food she’d prepped would last a single person two whole weeks, let alone the entire qz. “it’s gonna take longer than two weeks to come back from this,” ollie sighs, kicking at the frozen soil. it wasn’t like her to not remain optimistic but she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t nervous for the future. “listen if you need help i’ll share what i have, but don’t go telling around the qz because i am no match for anyone that wants to beat me up for a can of peaches.”

being the lookout, nix was a keen observer. she studied people, she tristan always seemed to have his witts about him, focused on doing his job and doing it to the best abilities. she admired it. people needed exactly that in times of trouble. she was going to do what she could to stick with this one, have him in her corner.

as they spoke together in hushed tones, nix nodded with each word tristan spoke. "yeah, you're right. i'm following your lead, right behind you." she responded, moving to stand next to him as he approached the crowd. she was lucky when he showed up when he did, this group was getting ansty, and not hearing anything she was saying. but, as she knew, sometimes people responded better when there was another voice telling them the same thing, as irritating as it was.

tristan's plan was met was compliance for the most part, the spare few questioning if what he was saying was the truth or another line from fedra to keep them all in line. "officer shaw is right, we're in this together. as we're trying to figure it all in the smartest way possible." she added, with another nod. it took a few moments for the entire formerly angry mob to disperse, but one by one they left their place at the wall, retreating back up to the apartments, only a few slightly defeated, most relived that there was a plan in place.

"thank you, seriously. i know you guys are at the brim with requests and surveillance right now, so i appreciate you stopping." she thanked him, exhaling softly. "are you doing okay with everything? i know you're taking care of others, but how are you?"

despite her talk with elijah, she was still heavily involved with the qz, more specifically, her post. while she knew it was dangerous, but she couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. she had friends and loved ones inside these wall, and she didn’t want them to starve. she’d been keeping a look out for as far as she could with the civilians who decided to go outside of the zone to search. however, when it was after curfew, it became a big deal. especially in these times.

tonight, there was quite the influx of people, most of them without weapons, and as far as nix was concerned, without a clue. “stop, listen, i know you guys are hungry, but going out there with no supervision especially at his hour is a death wish, just hold on.” she advised the group of people, frantically looking around for an officer to aide her. and that’s exactly what she found.

“officer shaw!” she shouted, waving him down as she moved to the side of the look out tower where she spotted him, in the midst of heading this direction already. thank god. “i could use your assistance!” she came down from her post to meet him with the other civilians. she pulled him out of earshot of the people, turning so they weren’t directly facing them. “this group? is trying to go and hunt. and i see…what, two weapons between them? and it’s pitch black outside. i know people have got to find food, but this is ridiculous. they’re gonna get themselves killed.” she spoke, in a low tone. “how do you want to play this?”

upon exiting the bar full of anxious civilians, tristan couldn’t help letting out an audible sigh now that he had some space for himself and had fresh air to clear his head. although he had seen his share of stressful situations, this period of time was truly exceptional. anyone who’d be in a full room of people would know just how claustrophobic it could get, even for him.

just as he thought that he’ll end his night with the bar, yet another group of people appeared in his sight. they were down the road, basically hugging the main wall. they reminded him of moths that were flying into their demise, having no self control over their actions. people were scared, he understood that. deep down he was, too. or, at very least, considerably worried. if he was to allow himself to show that, all hell would break lose. someone had to keep it together. someone had to represent hope along discipline.

realizing that there was no way he could possibly leave those civilians unattended, tristan started heading their way with a quicken step, until someone’s clear but loud voice pierced through the cold air, immediately catching the officer’s attention. the look-out. nix. in that moment tristan was aware that they didn’t get to interact much before, but fate has interesting ways of bringing all kinds of people together. guess this was their chance.

❝ miss carter. ❞  tristan greeted nix as soon as they approached one another. it was clear that the people were not having it that particular night. it seemed as though they wanted to leave the qz, which in tristan’s mind was the most foolish act anyone could commit to. there was no need to ask for any details, as nix proceeded to fill him in right there and then.

❝i see. ❞  at this point, there was only one thing they could do. convince them. by any means necessary. as long as they stayed inside for the night, would be a win for tristan. ❝ we give them what they want. hope.❞hope was the most powerful tool these days that could keep people motivated to do almost anything. and it just happened that in that moment it’s what those people needed the most.

❝okay, everyone, please calm down!❞raising his tone, tristan proceeded to approach the group, keeping his hands up so they could see he meant no harm. it was just like trying to calm down a feral animal. they didn’t think, only acted based on fear. their fight or flight responses were activated, but tristan couldn’t blame them. they just didn’t see a way out. ❝tomorrow we will send out our butchers along with bounty hunters to scavenge food supplies. some of the officers, including myself, will join them to supervise the process. ❞

he tried to speak with as much confidence and calmness as possible. one wrong word or a strange tone and people would stop listening to him. ❝ please, return to your apartments. the situation will change in a couple of days. after all, we are all in this together, aren’t we? ❞ he wasn’t going to give them a chance to think he was bluffing. the officers, including him, were also low on food. if the citizens were to starve, so were the higher-ups. no one was an exception to the rule, in the current state of world and they knew that.

as elijah spoke, she tried hard to hide the hurt on her face, but she knew she wasn't doing a great job of it. she was not gonna cry, though. absolutely not. as they kept reminding each other, it had been three years. three years was a long time to be without someone in that way. she exhaled shakily, turning her gaze away from him for a moment. it was cute of him to think she wasn't going to get him to tell her who, but that wasn't the time for that now. "okay....alright.." she spoke, softly, meeting his gaze once again. "i know i don't really have a right to be angry, but i can't lie that i'm...it's stinging a little, eli." she spoke, honestly. if they were going to have this conversation she had to be truthful, right? "but i...i get it. and, i still want you. i can't imagine not being with you. that's not a reality i want to live in. even as old as you are." she joked, moving to lace their fingers together. "i want to work through this. i love you more than anything. you were the thing that kept me alive all this time." she gently played with his fingers. "the people you slept with, do they know about me? is anything you had going on finished? because, honestly, elijah, if it's not, i need it to be dead and gone before we starting doing this again. so if there's any lingering feelings you have for anyone, i want to know now."

"yeah three years is a long time..." elijah let nix get out everything she needed to in between his thoughts. there was more than he was leading onto her, he had some secrets he wanted to clear the air with. he basically cheated on her. no not basically -- he did. it was years since they seen each other, and though he just knew she wasn't dead, at some point life did go on. and which at that point he decided that she wasn't coming back. she had been through so much, he knew she probably wouldn't react well to this but he needed to clear the air before someone else did before him. "nix," he stopped her. "i haven't told you everything yet. i mean, we haven't had the time with you just coming back. but i need to be honest with you. i don't want you to hear anything else than from me. i feel like i can't fully be here or in the moment with you, or start fresh until... i say this." he started, clearing his throat. "i love you. let me start there. i still want you. i still want to be with you, i want to marry you. seeing you come back was probably the happiest moment of my entire existence... god, i don't even know how to say this..." he stared down for a moment. "...while you were gone i've been sleeping with other people. -- it doesn't matter who so don't ask me. they don't matter... only a couple of times. i waited for you but you never came... i just, i... please just say something. please just tell me we can work through this, please say that you understand to some capacity."

she smiled, stealing another kiss from him seconds later. "you never let me end up on any lists, it's your fatal flaw." she caressed his face gently. she hated the fact that he was in this job during times like this. she knew if anything happened to him, she'd be the first one about to start a riot. she frowned as his words, her hand dropping from his face. "oh, trust me, i know, i've seen the boards and the influx. but, and when i say this i don't mean it towards you, that's not good enough. i'm not just gonna accept that as reality. there has to be somewhere we can get stuff, not just for us, but for her too. you know how she is, eli, she won't fend for herself, she'll just lay in her bed and starve. and i'm not losing her. i'm not losing anyone. not again."

elijah grabbed her jaw leaning into peck her lips. "yeah, yeah, yeah." he smirked pulling away from her as she gave him the subtle reminder. "yeah but no getting aggressive in general because then you will end up on a most wanted list." he reminded her. he stood while she explained the things she needed to get for rowan and gave her a look of uncertainty. "baby, i don't think there's much you can find right now. we've boarded off most places and have guards hitting every alley against the people breaking in. i mean, i have some stuff back at my place that we can give rowan but.. it's not enough for two weeks worth, let alone one of us. we didn't prepare for this because we didn't know it was going to happen."

"it's such a coincidence that I'm secretly and sneakily in love with you, too." she gasped, playfully. "i mean, that sounds more than fair to me. you deserve to get paid for all his entertainment somehow." she smiled brightly. "exactly, you know, most things can be sharpened and made into a weapon, remember that in those trying times." she winked at the other. "well, you're looking at one person, but i can't whip it out now." she spoke, in a playful, hush hush tone. "i will be screaming for you so loud from my couch. i'm thankfully close to ending it, it's been pretty lowkey today." with that, she took a look around her area, making sure she wasn't missing anything.

nix hadn’t laughed this much in a minute, she was thankful for that. thankful for them. “every night? and for free? i have to do something for your troubles, maybe i owe you a drink or two at the bar one night, hm? or food at the diner?” she offered, earnestly. “my glorious stick vision would be spear realness. sharpen one end and it’s a vital weapon of destruction. please, don’t throw it at me, but just take my word for it. although, i wouldn’t let you get arrested, couldn’t sleep at night if i did.”

"every night. i'm actually secretly in love with you," davy put a hand to their heart, doing a little spin on their toes. only their snorting laugh was the indication that they were joking. "a drink! and if i make you laugh that night, then you get me two drinks. i'm a simple guy," they said, pretending to pop a collar. at the mention of a spear, davy's jaw dropped, suddenly looking at the stick with new eyes. "shut the front door, you're so right. we're ten steps away from death at all times, after all. gotta keep away the darn plague." davy waved the stick around as if fending off infected. "do you, by chance, know anyone really cool who can use a knife? aw, nix, you're my hero. if i ever win an actual acting award, you'll be in my speech. so did you just start your shift or are you close to ending?"

nix was relived love was okay, but she saw the worry all over her friend's face. even in the position nix was in, having an officer she was with, she felt scared. she could only imagine how others felt about the situation. "i'm so glad you're alright," she smiles, exhaling softly. "yes, unfortunately it's true. i don't really know anything beyond what was said yet." she leaned against the frame of the tent, gently of course. "listen, people are going outside the zone and hunting, okay? i've seen the groups myself, there's going to be some stuff for us to have, at least. people will get something." she spoke, as if she was trying to convince herself. "do you have enough for right now?"

❛ —  nix ! hello , hi ... ❜ relief covers her delicate face the moment love's eyes find her friend , a tiny smile briefly flashing on her lips . this was definitely not the happiest moment of her life , far from it , but at least nix had come to see her . ❛ i'm okay ! i ... is it true ? the announcement , is it true ? ❜ setting down the stethoscope she'd used just a few moments ago on a patient , love sprayed a bit of sanitizer in her hands and patted them together before approaching nix . ❛ no more food , for two weeks ? nix they can't do this to us , they're going to let innocent people die ! ❜

"baby, i promise i'm being careful out here. i was avoiding most of the crowds until now. i've learned from the best over the years." she reminded him, offering him a soft smile. "i don't need you on any most wanted list, okay? if someone gets aggressive with me, you know i'm just gonna get aggressive back. and no one is more aggressive than me when i'm angry." she took his hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "i've ran into most of my friends, still on the hunt for rowan. i'm sure she's just hiding in her room. i gotta make sure she has what she needs, i have to get her some stuff."

"i understand that, i do. but you can't just--" he stopped himself and let out a sigh. he took his lesser lip between his teeth and gave himself a moment. it's not her fault, and if the roles were reversed he would have been doing the same thing. "i just... i get worried." he reminded her. "i know what these people are capable of and i can't lose you again. if someone decides to get aggressive with you, i-... i'll be the next on the most wanted let's just say that." he explained. "but you're okay? is your sister and friends okay?"

"eli, i have a sister and friends in here, i have to make sure they're good, especially in times of trouble." she explained. she knew it was dangerous, the streets full of rioting and distressed people. "i'm sorry i ignored you, but i knew you wouldn't let me do what i knew i had to do." she rested her hands against his chest. "you know, i don't like that you're out here either. are you okay?"

hearing nix's voice was so calming to the situation at hand so he allowed her to help make the point across. he took a moment to let the civilians say whatever else, which he then just brushed them off. he took nix by her arm to pull her off to the side and gave her a look. "where the hell have you been?" he questioned. "i know you saw me motion for you to come to me. it's not safe right now, people are losing their minds, why are you out here?"

"yes, exactly, everything's going to be fine. the officers are doing everything they can to help out. they can't do that if you're screaming at them." nix came from behind the two civilians who elijah spoke to, knowing he didn't need help, but knowing he'd probably said this a million times today. she could take a crack at it.

"i promise you, everything is going to be okay. as soon as we get word on what's the next move, you will all know too. you need to calm down."

"we've got a lot of smokers around here, i'm sure you'll be able to bum one from the next." she offered, moving closer to the male. "we have that in common." she responded, exhaling softly. "nix, i'm the new girl, you're taking my spotlight." she chuckled softly. "most people here have been here for a while, apparently, can't take it too personally i suppose."

"oh, sweet mj, we can't let that happen again. i will teach you to shoot with 100% accurately, all the time. you'll be shooting rats out of the garden in no time." nix thought for a moment, probably not the best idea to give her, but honestly, montana would always find a way to do the craziest option. nix admired it, but also feared it in a sense. "i've seen some pretty people here, and if no one is settle down worthy, you could totally be in you hook-up era. chase is pretty cute, i hear he's kind of the captain of the hook ups around here." she suggested, shrugging, raising her eyebrows playfully at the girl. "borrowing booze? oh, you really are a woman after my own heart. because half a stale beer won't do for us tonight. do we know who's working tonight? we could really hit the motherlode if we play our cards right."

“and i will always be here to help you sort them out. especially ones that have to do with shooting.” she crossed her arms over her chest, chuckling softly at the girl’s words. she was always so amused by montana. “well, i think you look fabulous, even with all of that going on. and you know, i heard having a penis isn’t that great besides for peeing. we got screwed in that category.” she grinned, her smile fading once she mentioned maya. “oh, i remember her, and speaking of things that are fucked, she’s at the top of my list. you’re gonna find a much better babe than her. i’ll personally try and hook you up myself.” wrapping an arm around her friend, they headed towards the apartments. “now that sounds amazing. booze, we’ll have to stop by the bar for that. but i’m happy to accompany you.”

“good, because last time i shot a gun, i shot my friend in the foot and had to be his personal servant for like a whole year to make up for it. which is fair enough. now he walks around showing the hole in his foot claiming he’s jesus, i’m not sure if my aim made him insane or of it just enabled the insane behaviour by providing some tangible evidence.” she laughs, the story was exaggerated, but it made for a funny anecdote when put this way. “you flatter me nix, but we both know how bomb i look when i’ve actually had like twenty minutes to myself.” she would have to have a shower once they got to her loft, there was no way she’d touch food looking…and smelling this way. plus, nix could actually do her hair. she’d know how. “you gonna hook me up, huh? who’re the candidates? fair warning, i’m like, super picky. and still pick wrong every time. it’s truly a curse, but i’m like…in my hook-up era? is that a thing? like i wanna just eat up anyone even remotely cute or interested and it’s fuckin’ up my mind. probably like, a case of belated puberty or some shit.” or just hormones that time of the month, ovulation made her horny. “we might have to uh, borrow some booze. because with my rations we can afford like…half of a stale beer.”

nix laughed at davy’s display, shaking her head. “you truly succeeded in making me laugh so a plus for that. highest grade in the class.” she applauded for davy’s show, her laughter continuing. “i think my first decree is that you come by and see me everyday with more of … whatever this is. this is so amusing.” she looked at where the stick ended up. “you’re not the fighter, but i am, you know what we can do with that stick? i can see it now.”

davy started fake-crying, fanning their hand to their face like the miss united states’ girls of old. “oh my god, thank you, thank you — first i wanna thank my mom for not dying before she got to the qz, she’s so brave. ” she did a few more fans before doing a big old bow. “absolutely. i’ll do a different performance every night, how about that? and you’re getting this shit for free.” davy picked up the stick quickly and then leaned against it to rest a while, tilting their head like a golden retriever. “paint the picture for me, boss, what is your glorious stick vision? i’d throw it up to you but i’d probably miss and get myself arrested for being a public nuisance.”
