Week 14
My favorite topic in design will forever be typography. There is an amazing documentary called sign painters that talks about sign painting and at the heart of it they talk about the loss of hand lettering and quality signs. I could not be a bigger advocate for design its power of communication. I think my favorite thing to see is how letters can speak on their own without you necessarily having to read the word itself. I want to talk about how modern signs have become lazy and industrialized, made with vinyl or screen prints. I want to talk about how a sign and logo can speak volumes for a space, company, ect. It is very sad to see old beautiful painted signs that have lasted years slowly disappear and cheap temporary ones fill the spot instead.
I don’t have too many questions regarding art vs design. I do appreciate it because it is comparable to the functional vs nonfunctional debate. Although it is a more literal reference, I think all art is functional. Whether it can serve a physical purpose or emotional.
I have always loved design and the overall aesthetic of a space. This class has helped me learn the foundations and history that back up the feelings and instincts I have about design. It has been amazing to learn about typefaces and their different intents and purposes. To know why you feel differently when reading a book with different kerning, leading, and typeface.

Week 13
To address contemporary digital aesthetics it is important to address the upbringing of powerful software that allowed all different people to have access to an avenue of elevated design. This created opportunities and problems for the digital world as a whole. Typefaces were accessible yet sometimes not respected in regard to the designer. Or perhaps armatures were now aloud to publish things that sometimes lacked quality. This did open up the gates to digital aesthetics and experimentation. No longer did designer had to intricately draw typefaces from scratch, there was the possibility to vectorize and develop new styles through this freedom.
Digital aesthetics grew a larger definition and prominently typefaces were a driving force for that eager type of communication. In the past 30 years typefaces expanded into having their own themes, meanings, and voices. The textbook example of the title sequence in James Bond is a phenomenal example in the textbook. From the devious over saturated colors and background to the use of words in body parts, this design worked beyond just one facet of information. It spoke to the scandal, the excitement, the secrets that the Bond moves stir as you watch the film. This sequence prepared the viewers mind to begin the film. Another great example of this digital exploration was in Kanye West’s “power” music video. Here the designers were able to place Kanye in an elevated setting, beyond what a normal human could witness. The song is about conquering the limits of oneself, and here it is evident Kanye has already broken those chains. The design of having goddesses and mystical creatures stand before him gives an entirely different notion than if the video was just him singing before a crowd and being praised. Digital aesthetics paved a new way for elevated messages and interpretations.

week 12 - Interactive Design
It is pretty evident that interactive design wouldn’t have as many avenues as it does if it wasn’t for the evolution of the web. There are many facets of the web and the internet to debate whether they fall into the design world, but I would argue to say most of what we work with online is forced to address key design elements. The beginnings of web were not as familiar to the public, and most of its content was cluttered and chaotic. Web 2.0 is a era where cites were media rich and beginning to gain gravity. Between 1996 and 2010 platforms became much more interactive due to the exploration of animation, audio, and videos. Motion graphics have evolved in many ways over the years and it is important to remember that if they are not used intentionally for a design, they may hinder one.
Another field that has an immense impact on interactive design is advertising. Now the people are becoming more aware of advertisements and the relativity to what they say and what they see in their adds. Interactive design takes a whole new definition when we think about how the design itself is interacting with us, and what kind of knowledge it actually has about us. There is a double-edged sword in knowing that you now have adds relating more to you, but I think the side that is collecting information about you is a little sharper. I may argue that advertisement now has one of the strongest holds in the present-day term of interactive design.
Graphics and motion graphics are another powerful side of interactive design. Over the past decade animations have made amazing steps. Starting around 1990s commercials started to become less informational and more visually appealing. Adds and intros began to have more complicated and intense animations to get the viewer more engaged. From super heroes to sports, sifi to stop motion, movies and television has mad interactive design an element threaded in the entire worlds daily life.

week 11
The citizen designer in broad terms is a professional who attempts to address societal issues either through or in addition to his or her own commercial work. There is concern in this position because of the box it may put around a designer, but there is prosperity in it due to its giving nature to the world. In being a citizen designer, one can utilize their education through a balance of natural, social, and economical capital that can contribute to the expressive nature of the world around us. There is a trade off in working for the collective population, as an artist may lose their radical styles and creative ways of designing.
In being a citizen designer, it opens an individual’s creativity to the world. It no longer just serves as an outlet for a part of one. It can be a rhythm and notion that can bring electricity to an entire nation. However the label will remain controversial due to the hearts of true artists that create to challenge culture and grow the countercultures voice. To design under socially constructed guidelines can be both growth provoking while simultaneously being containing. Design is frequently driven by expressionism and an eye for appeal in a constructed world.
Now, how is this relevant? How does this apply to me? As a young design student, I am constantly pondering my future and how I will fit in this uncomfortable world. I am naturally, (as most artists are) a free flowing individual that solely works from my creative drive and inspiration. My best work comes from me feeling things fully and experiencing all the weird things life comes with. I can’t imagine working for a corporation and designing their pamphlets, informational cards, form templates, ect. I could easily see myself as a citizen designer but for some reason I feel the majority of those positions hold repetition and minimal control due to consumer requirements or company requirements. But I also can see how a creative mind could bring some of those redundant forms to life. If I worked for Lamar could I make those god awful billboards of theirs something everyone could admire and actually be inspired from. Citizen designers mean possibility to reach many, but so does being a independently driven designer.

Week 10
This week was one of my favorites. Even though I have been taught about the anatomy of type before, every time it is reiterated, I seem to pick up something new. What really caught my attention in the readings, was a quote by the author Stephen J Eskilson saying, “From the standpoint of our current era, in which so much is made of the impact of digital communication of culture and subjectivity, it would be hard to state the revolutionary effect that the invention of mechanical print has on society”. This comment really put a lot into perspective for me, and I thought of future generations who may grow up with no tangible books for their curriculum. I then tried to analyze my life and education, looking at how far I am from understanding the ever-relevant power that the mechanical printing press had on society.
Our words can be shared to the world within seconds. I can have a thought, feeling, opinion, ect., that I can TYPE out with minimal thought and share it with millions. 100 years ago, if I had a thought I wanted to share, I would have to hand write it or I would at least have to choose what audience I want to share this with. I am detached from tangible letters as it is, and I am a graphic designer with a niche love for hand lettering. There are so many people in the world unaware of the blinding power of these fast-acting keyboards. It is freeing to so quickly speak my mind, but in the same token, are these quick-witted feelings intentional? How much care and honesty am I giving this post, what part of me is just writing to get my 200 words in. What would my voice look like if I had to select each of these letters by hand. How would my dialect alter if I sat intimately with these words, fonts, and figures. Another quote Eskilson in a later paragraph, “it may be difficult to conceive an era where homely appeal won over stylish experiment.” These readings have been extremely thought provoking for me and I can’t wait to see how they express themselves through my art.
