An important decision: To junk your car or to repair it?

Once your car starts giving way, an important decision needs to be taken, whether to take it for wholesale repairs or to sell it off as junk. Usually, a car aged within 5 years does not require much maintenance or repairs at all, but rather only routine service does the trick. But if you had bought a used car with around 5-6 years on it and with 70k-100k miles on the odometer on an average, then the maintenance costs are only set to skyrocket further. A car also needs consistent repairs and there are a variety of services that need to be done on the car sometimes. The transmission might have broken down, the roof could need fixing, and the engine might start failing all of a sudden, along with a variety of maladies that may come to afflict the car. In this case, the repair costs might start to stack up and the value that you are getting back from the car might start to fade in comparison. So rather than taking it for repairs all the time, then it is much better to get instant cash for junk cars.

The resale value is another important consideration while deciding to junk a car or not. If you decide to trade the car for an upgrade, then if your current car is not running up to the standards expected, before taking it to trade it in, it might need thorough repairs to make it run more smoothly to ensure receiving a fair value for your car. But those repairs might cost much more and end up costing more to fix than to simply turn it in for cash upfront. Then, the price that you receive for the car can subsidize the cost of the next car that you are going to buy. In the car market landscape, there is also the fear of you getting an unfair price when you take your car for a trade-in and you might end up getting scammed. But if one sells their car off as junk, they are guaranteed a price for their car. Whatever condition a car is in, it will fetch at least a solid price on the market regardless if it is broken, burnt, damaged, crashed, or in any other similar condition. The whole process is also much faster with the negotiations taking a much shorter time compared to if you take your car for an exchange. Most premium cars do have an average lifespan of 10 or more years, but most budget cars do not have that kind of shelf life and in those cases, it might be best to sell off the car as junk.
