Chemiluminescence of “Luminol”
To exhibit its luminescence, the luminol must be activated with an oxidant. Usually, a solution containing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxide ions in water is used as the activator. In the presence of a catalyst such as an iron or periodate compound, the hydrogen peroxide is decomposed to form oxygen and water:
2H2O2 → O2 + 2 H2O
H2O2 + KIO4 → KIO3 + O2 + H2O
In a laboratory setting, the catalyst used is often potassium ferricyanide or potassium periodate. In the forensic detection of blood, the catalyst is the iron present in hemoglobin. Enzymes in a variety of biological systems may also catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.

When luminol reacts with the hydroxide ion, a dianion is formed. The oxygen produced from the hydrogen peroxide then reacts with the luminol dianion. The product of this reaction, an organic peroxide, is very unstable and is made by the loss of a nitrogen, the change of electrons from excited state to ground state, and the emission of energy as a photon. This emission produces the blue glow. - Wiki

Elemental Applications: Zinc
Because of its corrosion resistance, zinc is used mainly in galvanization, and then in alloys such as brass and bronze. Zinc is also used as an anode material in batteries and, often, as a replacement for lead. Compounds of zinc have a variety of uses, including as a white pigment in paint (zinc oxide),  luminescent pigments such as on the hands of clocks, X-ray and television screens, and luminous paints or crystals in infrared lasers (zinc sulfide).

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the amazing real-life monster that is Saga pedo. Why makes this fierce Amazon cricket so amazing? Let’s find out!
(Note: none of those photos are mine and all have been correctly credited to the best of my knowledge. If there’s any problem with them being here let me know!)
Tumblr media
(Just strolling by… Image from http://www.klooiplek.eu/ )
1. Let’s face it, the Latin name Saga pedo read in English could be interpreted very poorly in a number of ways. Just wanted to get that out of the way.
2. So instead, it has a number of intimidating vernacular names, either related to its behavior, its size, or its spikiness - or all of the above. These include the English “Spiked Magician”, the French “Magicienne Dentelée” and “Langouste de Provence”, the Italian “Stregona Dentellata”, and the German “Große Sägeschrecke“.
Tumblr media
(Ouch, yes? From Wikipedia.)
3. Why “magician”? Because of the way it holds its front legs, much like a mantis. In fact…
4. Saga pedo is a tettigoniid, a bush cricket (or katydid to you Yankees), and is part of the larger family of grasshoppers, crickets, and such. Tettigoniids are generally omnivorous, and Saga pedo is a cricket taking predation to the next level. You could say it’s converging on mantids.
5. It’s huge, one of the biggest European insects. It’s also wingless and can’t fly. This size and winglessness has led to it being called a “lobster” in some names.
6. See those spines on the inside of its forelegs? They’re used for the exact same purpose mantids use their raptorial forelimbs: grabbing and impaling prey. For that matter note that they don’t have the defensive hind-leg spikes.
7. They will eat anything they can catch, and that includes their own kind. Prey is killed by biting through the neck. They don’t appreciate being manhandled either, and can bite hard.

(Om nom nom. Image from http://www.anura.it/works/green-terror-the-predatory-bush-cricket-saga-pedo/)
8. Male Saga pedo are all but unknown. All-female populations reproduce by parthenogenesis - virgin birth.
9. Canadian rock band Saga is named after them. Their album covers feature a (winged) robot grasshopper.

Star Cluster Omega Centauri in HDR : Behold the largest ball of stars in our galaxy. Omega Centauri is packed with about 10 million stars, many older than our Sun and packed within a volume of only about 150 light-years in diameter. The star cluster is the largest and brightest of 200 or so known globular clusters that roam the halo of our Milky Way galaxy. Though most star clusters consist of stars with the same age and composition, the enigmatic Omega Cen exhibits the presence of different stellar populations with a spread of ages and chemical abundances. In fact, Omega Cen may be the remnant core of a small galaxy merging with the Milky Way. The featured image shows so many stars because it merged different exposures with high dynamic range techniques. Omega Centauri, also known as NGC 5139, lies about 15,000 light-years away toward the southern constellation of the Centaurus. via NASA

Nickel: Did you know?
When alloyed with titanium in a 1:1 ratio, nickel forms a material popularly known as nitinol - a shape memory alloy that will return to is ‘preprogramed’ shape upon heating.

I’ve always thought it could be cool to do more, like actual blogging here. But I don’t (personally) have a ton of “this is what it’s like to be nonbinary in science” material to make it an ongoing thing.
But stand by. I’m working on a couple of ideas....

I’ve done a reaction with 40 wt. % dimethylamine solution in H2O. The bad thing was that it only started when the solution was at 90 °C and it was slightly exothermic, so after it started, it was at 100 °C in no time.
The gas bubbler at the top of the reflux condenser indicated that a LOT dimethylamine gas escaped from the reaction as seen on the gif. The coloration of the liquid in the bubbler was caused by an indicator to see, that dimethylamine is going away or something else is happening.
