Journaling 4/9/25
nothing just a breakdown. I’ve had a few of those today. I don’t know man when I left this hick ass town I’m from I wasn’t really expecting to find people who care about me. And I thought I found so many of them!! And maybe it’s that I’m really really different than I was even a few months ago but I’m starting to realize a lot of the people that I genuinely love and care about only think of me as someone they hang out with occasionally.
and i feel shitty for even thinking that way; like God awful actually.
I’m in a religious group. I love it. Although It’s a little culty sometimes—our entire mission is serving God by living our lives open and earnestly with each other. Openness. Transparency. All good things. So my friends in there are a lot more open with me. Not always warmer—but we’re vulnerable around each other more often. Which, I think, helps. I know I can talk to them if I need to…even If I don’t necessarily agree with agree with the answer you know it’s all we hold each other accountable because we love each other which I understand and I’m grateful for because why wouldn’t I be. But sometimes I start to wonder if we’re intentionally trying to build connections that aren’t there…is the bond we have real?? Are those people actually my friends?? Would they still care about me if I left the organization (hypothetically)? How many people in my life actually care? Like if I’m okay or not? Like if somethings wrong with me? Because all the time I’m not okay and I realize ā€œi have no one I could call right nowā€
And it hurts.
It’s painful and exhausting to be surrounded by so many people and still feel alone.

little women
one of my reading goals for 2024 is to read more "classic books." i read little women and i can proudly say it's now one of my favourite books of all time. not only was it a heartwarming and relatable read, but it integrated great themes of feminism, love, class and much more into the whole experience of being a woman. it also showcased the journey of self growth from girl to woman among four sisters.
i've never felt like i've ever related to a character more than jo march. her feelings, experiences and thoughts are so similar to mine and it was a delight to feel so synonymous to someone despite her being a fictional character.
although jo march is my spirit animal, i found little parts of me which related to the other march sisters as well.
these are a few traits of the march sisters which i feel like i have as well.
jo march - strong, independent and free spirited - adventurous (both physically & mentally). wants to travel sooo bad to expand and grow - wants love yet doesn't want it. likes the idea of love but would rather find herself
meg march - finds comfort in the simplicities of a home life - loves the idea of love and marriage - likes a good materialistic splurge on material goods and superficial things (we're girlies! of course we like to treat ourselves a bit)
amy march - creative and artistic - has a childlike, youthful spirit - always feels like she has to compete with her sisters (being the youngest child)
beth march - loves and connects to music, passionate about piano playing (i play violin & guitar) - in tune with nature and the outside world - shy and timid around strangers or those she doesn't know well, but very open and comfortable around her loved ones

Types of Argument: Toulmin
There are 3 basic structures or types of argument:
Toulmin Argument
Rogerian Argument
Classical or Aristotelian Argument
The Toulmin Argument
Tumblr media
Although the Toulmin method was originally developed to analyze arguments, some professors ask students to model its components.
Each of these serves a different purpose, and deciding which type to use depends upon the rhetorical situation.
In other words, you have to think about what is going to work best for your audience given your topic and the situation in which you are writing.
There are 6 elements for analyzing, and, in this case, presenting arguments that are important to the Toulmin method.
Claims - A statement of opinion that the author is asking her or his audience to accept as true.
Grounds - The facts, data, or reasoning upon which the claim is based. Essentially, the grounds are the facts making the case for the claim.
Warrant - What links the grounds to the claim. This is what makes the audience understand how the grounds are connected to supporting the claim. Sometimes, the warrant is implicit (not directly stated), but the warrant can be stated directly as well. As a writer, you are making assumptions about what your audience already believes, so you have to think about how clear your warrant is and if you need to state it directly for your audience. You must also think about whether or not a warrant is actually an unproven claim.
Backing - Gives additional support for the claim by addressing different questions related to your claim.
Qualifier - Essentially the limits to the claim or an understanding that the claim is not true in all situations. Qualifiers add strength to claims because they help the audience understand the author does not expect her or his opinion to be true all of the time or for her or his ideas to work all of the time. If writers use qualifiers that are too broad, such as ā€œalwaysā€ or ā€œnever,ā€ their claims can be really difficult to support. Qualifiers like ā€œsomeā€ or ā€œmanyā€ help limit the claim, which can add strength to the claim.
Rebuttal - Is when the author addresses the opposing views. The author can use a rebuttal to pre-empt counter arguments, making the original argument stronger.
These elements of a Toulmin analysis can help you as both a reader and a writer.
When you’re analyzing arguments as a reader, you can look for these elements to help you understand the argument and evaluate its validity.
When you’re writing an argument, you can include these same elements in to ensure your audience will see the validity in your claims.
Examples
Claims. There should be more laws to regulate texting while driving in order to cut down on dangerous car accidents.
Grounds. The National Safety Council estimates that 1.6 million car accidents per year are caused by cell phone use and texting.
Warrant. Being distracted by texting on a cell phone while driving a car is dangerous and causes accidents.
Backing. With greater fines and more education about the consequences, people might think twice about texting and driving.
Qualifier. There should be more laws to regulate texting while driving in order to cut down on some of the dangerous car accidents that happen each year.
Rebuttal. Although police officers are busy already, making anti-texting laws a priority saves time, money, and lives. Local departments could add extra staff to address this important priority.
The Toulmin method, developed by philosopher Stephen Toulmin, is essentially a structure for analyzing arguments.
But the elements for analysis are so clear and structured that many professors now have students write argumentative essays with the elements of the Toulmin method in mind.
This type of argument works well when there are no clear truths or absolute solutions to a problem.
Toulmin arguments take into account the complex nature of most situations.
