SHE LETS OUT A LAUGH. Truthfully, she meant to keep it inwardly sarcastic, but she was completely unable to do so. She wouldn’t begin to delve into her problems, as per the way Alana always managed to do it, she turned a situation around, and made it about the other person. She wasn’t a FAN of talking about herself.

“ I’m more of a tell me about your problems person, rather than the me tell you about mine. ”she laughs, it ws no exaggeration. Even when she was forced into therapy, she was the worst patient. All Doctors were. “ You did that with grace and easy flow——are you sure YOU’RE not the Psychiatrist? ” she grins.

BRIAN’S FACE BREAKS INTO A WIDE SMILE, as if Rudy had just found himself somehow somewhat charmed by Alana’s quaint little aversion to talking about her apparently rather lacklustre personal life. Must not do much with her day. Figures.

“ Hey– c’mon, I’m right. ” He keeps a warm, friendly gaze, gently patting the seat just next to him, adding on a “ sit down. Talk to me. ” with a mock-professionality.

She knew next to shit about dating. She’d only ever been with one boy and he almost ruined her life. Hell, he almost caused her to take her own life, but she got out of that somehow.  ❝But I guess it doesn’t make it hurt any less,❞  she goes on to say. She isn’t going to be some cold bitch when it was clear that she was still hurting after her breakup.

              ❝No– no, I–❞ Emma cuts herself off with a wince. Still young, and still dying. ❝This is really embarrassing. I don’t know what I’m trying to say. I’m not– hurt, or anything, but he might’ve been the only boyfriend I’ll ever have, and he was a pot dealer that was only here for the summer.❞

              It wasn’t like she didn’t want anybody around her to ignore the big, mucus-filled elephant in the room. She was happy that Violet wanted to talk to her about normal, teenage girl stuff. It made a change.

               Gunner had sold pot. He definitely hadn’t sold any of the fancy, high-grade stuff grown on the edge of town– mainly because fancy, high-grade pot farms on the edge of town were only rumoured to actually exist at all– and it was nice, but he had sold pot. No relationship is perfect.

“No.” Norma retorts, already having angrily emptied the contents of her evidently well-loved ‘New Seasons Market’ grocery bag onto the kitchen island. 

She’d been humiliated in front of the council, embarrassed in front of the sheriff, and done about a weeks’ worth of grocery shopping– all before two thirty today. If she hadn’t just shat on her chances at stopping the bypass, then she would’ve been able to find some humour in that. It was only she when realised she couldn’t find the solutions to all her problems while knelt down in front of the cheeses at the bottom of the fridge that she figured she should stand up, relax, and say something else:

“I’m... I had a bad time. I’ve gotta leave again to go pick up Norman in an a couple hours, anyway, it’s not worth going into– it’s stupid–”

in lila’s experience, the fear of a scathing rejection from everyone they ever knew definitely isn’t an uncommon one for someone to experience as they’re beginning to veer off the path towards staying sober.  those that let their fears make them feel as if nobody else is going to understand them start to become the sole obstacle on their own path to recovery, and then they don’t get better, all because they never found the courage to let anybody in.  

‘ it will, ’ said lila, not about to let dexter slip away.  ‘ you have to make them understand you.  the people who care about you can’t help with what they don’t get. ‘

she straightened her back, taking a sip of her coffee before lifting her gaze to meet his.
