So... that new War of the Worlds adaptation...

If that thing even counts as an adaptation anyways.

For the unfamiliar, hi, I'm Observer in Silence. I post... occasionally, but I digress. This isn't something I usually do, but this one... felt personal.

So, I'm a really big fan of War of the Worlds. No, not the 2025 one, god no, I mean... basically everything else. War of the Worlds is a bit a hyper fixation for, from the original HG Wells novel, to its many adaptations. I'm especially a big fan of the Jeff Wayne's musical adaptation.

Which is why I'm... more than a little insulted right now. For those that don't know, a new "adaptation" of War of the Worlds just came out, staring somebody everyone call Ice Cube. I don't know who that is other than that it's apparently quite silly for him to staring in this movie.

Fair warning, this is probably going to be a bit of long rant.

Now... I haven't watched it. I don't WANT to watch it, and if you are at all familiar with this movie, you'd know why. But I know a lot about the original source material, other adaptations to comment on what I do know about this... thing. But before I do that... I just want to say how... upsetting it is, that this is what War of the Worlds is currently known for. What many people are calling the worst movie of all time. And in my opinion, not that it's a particularly hot take, the worst War of the Worlds adaptation, and that's competing with two films made by the Asylum. You know, the people who made Sharknado and produce endless stream of mockbusters. So the bar is low.

But this movie man... wow. Starting with the... the message? This movie is, or at least tries to be, political. Now that is not a knock, plenty of stories are political in nature, some of the stories I want to make sure are, and even the original story was a political allegory to some extent. The problem is, the messages aren't the same.

So, the original story by HG Wells was few things, mainly a metaphor of colonialism. It was basically a way to show the British what it was like to be on the receiving end of it. It was very ahead of its time in that regard, and I think not enough modern adaptations really explore this angle.

What this movie is about is... government surveillance? Sure... that is something that should be talked about but... you noticing the issue here? Aside from this being an amazon prime movie, making this hilariously ironic, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WAR OF THE WORLDS.

I've seen the message of this movie summed up succinctly as: Government surveillance will make aliens attack. I... wish this was an exaggeration, but I've yet to see anything that suggests it isn't. Of course I doubt that was intended to be message, but I highly doubt they really put much thought AT ALL into the messaging aside from "government surveillance bad." Not a controversial take, but you should probably properly explain the WHY. And you also probably should use something other than a story about an alien invasion to do so.

I suppose now's the time to talk about my favorite aspect of the original movie, the aliens themselves. Originally, they were Martians but of course more modern adaptations change that, because mars is a lifeless rock. Except... that was kind of there motivation in the book. The reason the Martians invaded earth in most forms I know, is that Mars is becoming uninhabitable, and were using earth as new home. It made Martians a bit more interesting than generic evil aliens. Of course they were still evil, for genociding humanity to make room for there colonization, but it at least made sense.

In the 2025 movie though, there here for our data. Because... they eat... data. ...

What?

No seriously what? When I first heard that, I had to go back a few seconds in the review I was watching, I was so dumbfounded. How does one... eat data? Why is that a food source, and why does is this technologically advanced race not able to produce there own? It makes no sense. In the original, and a lot of adaptations, they consumed our blood. They were so technologically dependent that they couldn't even eat without the aid of tech. This change only exists I imagine to justify the whole video surveillance thing this movie's trying to do.

So... I should probably talk about the war machines, the most iconic aspect of any War of the Worlds adaptation. Typically tripods in most adaptations, and in the original, that stays true for this movie. They look... fine, abhorrent CGI not withstanding. They just look... generic, and clearly inspired by the Tom Cruise War of the Worlds movie. Also like most adaptations, only the tripods. No mention of the handling machines or even the red weed. Interesting, you do get to see tripod detach head into what imagine is a reference to flying machines, something you rarely see in adaptations. But that's all the credit this movie gets.

We don't even get to see the Alien's themselves, assuming they are any.

Overall its... just depressing. That's not getting into the movie's general bad writing, bad CGI, bad acting, bad... everything. HG Wells is spinning in grave so hard, it resembles whenever a Source Engine ragdoll gets stuck in a door. I hate that this exists. It's an insult to my autism. If you want a good War of the Worlds adaptation, listen to the Jeff Wayne musical, it's awesome. At least the name: War of the Worlds will be in public consciousness.

There's probably more I can say, but I've ranted more than enough. This was just a way to vent my frustration... and a way to at least post SOMETHING on tumblr. Promise, I'll be more active... someday.

Back with some more Metroid!

Wasn't really happy with my first iteration of the varia suit, as given how buff I had made Samus's zero suit design it felt to thin. So I buffed it up a bit, and got rid of some the patterning as I felt they didn't quite fit. Maybe I'll give the patterns another shot someday, but I'm quit happy with this as it is. Also since I redid the varia suit, I figured I should redo dark Samus's design to match, and improve how her hands looked.

Hello, I'm not dead. Sorry about the lack of content lately, college and all. That and motivation to do things I want to post online. The good news is that I'll posting much more often now, and by that I mean at least once a week. Anyways, I may have a thing for power armored super soldiers... with very big booba.

Have you ever wanted to play a cute monster taming game with lots of love and heart put into every inch and corner of it by a Team of fantastically talented artists?

Me too!! Too bad it got cancelled literally a few weeks before it was going to be anounced!

Artist Nicholas Kole on twitter along with many other talented artists have been sharing their work of nearly 4 years on this game. I cant imagine the heartbreak of working so hard on this project only for it to get canceled right before Release and everyone on the Team to get laid off.

It was meant to be an open world, minecraft inspired builder, with all sorts of unique creatures with various skins, variations depending on biomes, and even petting animations. That you could tame! It also had a large amount of beautiful and unique character customization. Here's some of the art ( NOT MY ART ) for the project!

Apparently alot of this game was near finished, coded, etc! ( ART ABOVE IS BY NICHOLAS KOLE , JOHANNES FIGLHUBER, INES MARSAL, AND MARIA LOBANOVA )

I dont know if the artists can look into crowdfunding ( the Studio still may own the IP ) , but myself and a few others have been trying to get the hashtag #bringbackprojectdragon get some traction on twitter! Maybe if the internet raises enough stink, the Studio might pay attention. Im not sure how likely that is but I desperately want thus game to exsist, it would be a dream game for me and many others im sure. So please consider joining in if you have a twitter.
