Angela finishes up a shower after a long day of busting, and as she towels off her hair, she sees a ping on video call from one of her Firehouse Girls. She smiles and hits the button. "Hey there, Zoe! What's going on back home?"

“Oh, nothing much. Chris is super absorbed in her work with the bookshop and I’ve just gotten to do a deep dive on some Sumerian artifacts.” She leaned back in her chair. “How are things in Japan?”

“Well... I can’t talk a lot about it, but honestly, it was really awesome to be out in the field, doing what I love. It was a lot of travel, to a couple of different sites, but each one was its own... thing? I guess? I dunno how to put it.”

Zoe let out a sigh and flapped her hands at her friend. “Yeah, yeah. You are a sap, but I’m glad you’re happy. Now, shush before I puke. Besides, it sounds like this girl can look after herself, so don’t push yourself too hard looking after her. If she really is-” Here, Zoe wiggled her fingers at Angela and did her traditional spooky voice. “wooooorthyyyyy~, she’ll feel the same.”

She grumbled and patted Angela’s back awkwardly. “I wasn’t worried. I know you’re not gonna ditch us, Ang.”

“And here’s a box to keep it in, so it doesn’t attract the attention of demon lords and fallen angels.” Angela hands over the lead-lined box. “Make sure to investigate this thing in an area that’s properly protected or warded. Now, onto to main topic of discussion.” Angela gives Zoe a quick rundown of how she met Mari, and how their relationship went from saving Mari’s life to living together. Of course she mentions Renn, whose presence is a calming influence to her.

“What it comes down to, Zoe, is that I’ve decided to stop searching. Mari is the one for me, full stop. And I hope you get to meet her.”

“That… seems like a good plan. That’s the sort of attention I think I would want to avoid.” She placed the metal fragment in the box, closing it before putting it in her bag. She then listened attentively as Angela told her about how she met her new girlfriend, and her new friend.

Zoe hummed thoughtfully and considered everything Angela had told her. “Honestly, I’m happy for you, Ang. You’ve had like, one decent partner before now, and a bunch of shitty ones, but she sounds like the real deal. But you know in my heart, I’m still a bit of a cynic. So if this doesn’t work out, you’d better not just give up.”

Zoe shrugged. “Yeah, I got too caught up in my work, didn’t have time for much souvenir hunting.”  She reached in her bag, searching through it. “Yeah, nothing in here that’s too interesting...” She pulled out a book. “I mean, I guess, unless you like dusty old books on Incan cryptology.”

“I knew you understood!” Chris then finally let go of Zoe. “So did you bring back anything fun from your work?” Chris asks with a sparkle of delight in her eyes

“Aw, there’s nothing like a hug from Uncle Ray. It’s good to see you too!” Zoe pulled back with bright eyes. “But seriously, open it. Or just let me tell you that I found it in an old used book store in Argentina, and I knew it’d be perfect for you.”

“Sooo, I hear I made it back just in time for a very important date!” Zoe pulled out a slightly poorly wrapped present. “Happy Birthday, Uncle Ray!”

“Thank you, Zoe!” He said, taking the present but opting to pull her into a hug instead. “Honestly, I think you being home is much more exciting. It’s so good to see you!”

“The far one on the left is the parent fungus and the others are some of the strands I’ve gently removed to cross-breed with that one.” Egon started to explain the different patterns, 

“I would like to add the electric blue to this set…it would balance the lime green and neon pink ones…Would…you like one to take home? I can always create another fungus to replace the one you’ve picked out.”

Zoe listened attentively as he explained the different fungi her eyes fixed on the tank. “I’ll definitely talk to her then. That would look really cool.” She blinked and then looked over at Egon with wide eyes. “Really? Can I? Oh, I promise I’ll take good care of it!”

“I’ll see if I can get a sample from her.” Zoe nodded and went over to the main light and flicked it off. She then carefully made her was back to the tank.

“Hey, Uncle Egon!” Zoe reached into her bag and pulled out some sealed vials. “I got the clearance to bring you back some interesting spores and such for your collection. From a just unsealed ancient tomb in South America.”

“It let off this faint blue glow. I didn’t get a close look, but I can probably message the microbiologist that was on the staff.

“Hey, Uncle Egon!” Zoe reached into her bag and pulled out some sealed vials. “I got the clearance to bring you back some interesting spores and such for your collection. From a just unsealed ancient tomb in South America.”

“Of course, I’m not stupid.” Zoe managed to gasp out before Chris let her go. “Oh, just a couple of things. Nothing too big or flashy.” She was teasing Chris, but she knew it would take the other girl a bit to catch on.

“I knew you understood!” Chris then finally let go of Zoe. “So did you bring back anything fun from your work?” Chris asks with a sparkle of delight in her eyes

“Hands off, got it.” Zoe clasped her hands behind her back as she followed him up the stairs. 

“Oooh, really? That sounds really cool! Now I wish I had brought one back from my trip, there was this cool one lining the walls of this one passageway.”

“I’ll let you know when they are.” Zoe raised an eyebrow as Angela began digging in her bag. “Something for me? Really?” She held out her hand for the small piece of metal before lifting it up to get a closer look, her eyes practically sparkling. “Oh, this is fascinating! Thanks! I’m going to have to give this a closer look!”
