#francesco pazzi#medici#u guys need to cut him some slack and put yourselves in his shoes for five damn minutes!#francesco is not an audience member like us having the 'lorenzo is the hero and jacopo the villain' narrative#presented to him on a silver platter#he's fully aware that jacopo manipulates people yes. but he's ALSO fully aware that lorenzo manipulates people too!#even if lorenzo is nicer about it he still purposely plays on francesco's weaknesses ('do it for your brother' 'now i'm your family too')#to get him to do something he wants#so which of two known liars and manipulators is francesco supposed to believe? the one who raised him or the one he was raised to distrust?#he says it himself 'i was raised to question every word from a medici mouth and old habits die hard'#in the end one (1) year of friendship with lorenzo just isn't strong enough to counter francesco's entire upbringing#yeah the miscommunication about novella is the catalyst but it's about so much more than that#it's not just one little easily preventable miscommunication. it's not bad writing. it's not francesco being stupid.#it's about the fact that lorenzo is a medici and francesco is a pazzi and they could never be truly friends#sorry for the rant whoops i just get salty when people say francesco's behavior in 2x05 makes no sense bc it makes PERFECT sense

fandom’s disbelief that francesco would fall for jacopo so easily in 2x05 reminds me of that post about how the tragedy of tragedies is that they’re preventable from the outside. if you were in francesco’s shoes, you wouldn’t have fallen for jacopo, would you? you wouldn’t have listened to the only parental figure you’ve known since you were a small child. you would’ve been strong enough to shake the decades-long psychological hold he has over you. you would’ve been clever enough to see through his carefully-planned manipulation. you wouldn’t have believed that your family’s longtime enemy was only faking friendship to use you for his own advantage. you would’ve been patient enough to give lorenzo and novella the chance to explain. you would’ve listened to your wife and enemy-turned-friend of 1 year rather than your parental figure of like 20 years. of course you would’ve.

medici antagonists ranked by level of pizzazz

1. francesco pazzi: if you look up pizzazz in the dictionary, there’s a picture of francesco there. he’s got the hair gel, he’s got the capes, he’s got the smirks, he’s got the eyeliner, he’s got the snark. pizzazz oozes off him. the real reason lorenzo had him executed is because he felt threatened by how much more pizzazz he has than any of the medici. rest in peace francesco, you took all of florence’s pizzazz with you when you left us.

2. jacopo pazzi: is he The Worst? yes. but does he understand the importance of melodrama and pizzazz? absolutely. “the time for politics is over. medici blood must be spilled.” PIZZAZZ! like nephew, like uncle. you can’t spell pizzazz without pazzi. i mean the letters are rearranged but it still counts.

3. albizzi: the OG signoria snarker and petty bitch of florence. his vibe does tend to lean more towards “crotchety old man” than the straight-up pizzazz we see from the pazzi, but he still has a very respectable amount of pizzazz. when he’s in prison and says “hey cosimo, maybe i killed your father” and then ominously steps back into the shadows, even though he absolutely did not kill cosimo’s father? the pizzazz JUMPED out! he simply couldn’t resist the urge to be over-the-top and got killed as a result! good for him.

4. riario: he tries so hard to have pizzazz and has little to none. “where’s the pizzazz?” more than one s3 viewer has said mournfully after we were treated to so much of it in s2. however, that one scene in 3x03 when bernardi says “the devil walks among us” and then the beat drops and it cuts to riario striding thru the palace of naples, that one moment does have a lot of pizzazz. credit where credit is due.

5. andrea pazzi: look i haven’t rewatched s1 in a long time but the fact that i can barely remember anything about andrea pazzi tells you that he has no pizzazz. the pazzi pizzazz gene must’ve skipped this guy. that’s why he committed his medici murder in secret rather than in broad daylight in front of half the city, he knew he didn’t have the pizzazz to pull that off.

6. savonarola: this is not a best-written antagonist list, if it was savonarola would be near the top. this list is based on pizzazz and pizzazz alone, and savonarola is the very ANTITHESIS of pizzazz! ridding florence of pizzazz is what he’s all ABOUT! “anti-pizzazz” is his entire platform! NO pizzazz to be found here!

#I JUST GASPED OUT LOUD#LOOK AT HIM!!!!!#this gives me such Fantasy Villain vibes and i’m here for it#specifically the villain from the first book in the trilogy who in book 2 ends up teaming up with the heroes#to defeat their mutual enemy the worse villain#and everyone in the Questing Crew hates this situation but they need each other so what else can they do but cooperate?#our villain gradually becomes the resident snarky bitch and that one weird sort-of-friend no one likes…………except eventually they DO#by book 3 he is an integral part of the Questing Crew and is 100% ride or die for them but still pretends to hate them#because he’s got his pride to think about here he can’t have people thinking he has Feelings#anyway. this got away from me djfgk i love this art so much!!#francesco pazzi#medici
