WHUMPTOBER 2022: 01 - A LITTLE OUT OF THE ORDINARY

“Stay with me Ethan, we're almost out.”

He leaned heavily on his squadmate as they walked, breath hitching with every step, left hand pressed to the wound in his side.

Keep going, keep going. He kept telling himself, it wouldn't be long now. Just a little farther and they'd be out, free from hell.

This wasn't supposed to happen.

For months they'd been working with the so-called rebellion. They'd actively taken out their own kind, spat on their corpses and wished them good riddance. It was a lie, a long play to lull the Coalition's forces into a false sense of security, then they struck. Incapacitated and cut off, their enemy knew exactly how to isolate and hurt them.

Immediate death however, was not their aim. These Vesaxe were different, removed from the hivemind and fashioned to be personable, to fly under the radar. They'd fooled everyone.

Ethan felt especially stupid. He'd gotten so many good soldiers killed, in ways he refused to acknowledge. It sickened him thinking about it. His heart had been torn from his chest and now sat with what remained of those he'd commanded. He would never be able to scrub those images from his mind - the inhuman screams as his friends were split open and -

“Ethan, don't give up on me now.”

Slicked with sweat, coated in blood and dirt, he looked sideways at Sloane and nodded. He winced as he dragged his feet, desperately sucking in oxygen with each step. He wanted so badly to drop to the floor and shut his eyes, but there'd be time for mourning and rest later. Taking the tunnel to the surface felt like eons and the upward slope did nothing but tire him faster. By the time they could see daylight, Sloane was practically dragging him from the splinter-hive's tunnel.

When they cleared the opening, Ethan's legs finally gave out and he fell to his knees in the damp dirt, curling over on himself as his blue eyes began to water and tears threatened to fall. He knew Sloane was there, hovering nearby, but couldn't bring himself to acknowledge them straight away. Conversation buzzed all around as friends reunited, the relief mixed with laughter and anguish.

Everything seemed to fade from his hearing, except for the sharp sound of his breathing. He was finally out, free, but so many hadn’t made it. The rainforest that blanketed the planet seemed so much more sinister.

The ground was drenched in blood that no one could see except him. Countless corpses hung in the hive, ready to be discarded. He had been next in line to be turned into an incubator, his side burned from where they’d started the process - unceremoniously stabbing him - but they never got the chance to finish. Everything came crashing back into focus as he felt a firm hand on his back.

“Ethan?” Sloane had returned, he looked them over, glancing at the dark line of re-growth in their violet hair and the dirt and blood caked onto their dark skin. How long had they been held prisoner? “Ethan hey, listen, they're saying this isn't just us. It's everywhere. The comm jammers are down. Ves just dropped dead out of nowhere, or have gone crazy. Somethings' happened, no one is sure what, but we've won.”

The war was over.

Ssoooo… how do you make friends/find people to talk to in the whump community if you don’t write stuff a lot, aren’t good at coming up with prompts, and can’t make gifsets?? Like I’d love to talk to more people here but also I feel too awkward to just jo to some random person and actively Start a conversation???

(In case anyone cares, I love fantasy and scifi whump, and sort of general adventure and action stuff. I’m in too many fandoms, I have a few OCs and original settings but I never have the motivation to write them, but I’d love to hear about your OCs!

Torture is fun, though in most cases my preferences run to briefer (like, couple of days to a couple of months) periods of captivity and torture, not like spending years in captivity, tho thay can also sometimes be fun :D Environmental whump is fun, action/battle whump is fun too! Lady/fem whump is also good! Team dynamics, and found familirs are great <3 Also love me a bit of fluffy comfort to go with my whump on occasion. I don’t actively mind box boys and similar, but I’m not super into them either. NSFW whump is a squick.)

Unknown to me, I've been into whump since I was a child and it was this community who helped me to realise my feelings. That what I felt wasn't bad, shameful or wrong, that I wasn't alone and there were many others who felt the same or similar. I will forever be grateful to you all for that and I have to say, it's the friendliest and most welcoming community I've ever been a part of.

This isn't my main blog for visual content I enjoy, I created this for my writing, and I felt it was only proper to introduce myself before my characters and their world. I have no idea if anyone will enjoy or care about what I post here, but if nothing else I can finally get what's in my head, out on to a page. A place for some fun and writing without much worry.

The characters I'll be writing about here started out as a joke between friends of 'how much can I torture them', but evolved into a whole plot and universe that's been a comfort for me for the past fifteen years or so. A lot of my favourite tropes are reflected in my writing so expect to see some of, if not all of the below, in some form or another.

I'm hoping to do all or most of Whumptober 2022 as a starting point and see what happens. I haven't seen much of others characters on here, but I'll gladly take recommendations!

*Kicks down the door* YOU KNOW WHUMPY TROPES I LOVE SO MUCH BUT BARELY EVER SEE?

MAGIC FATIGUE/EXHAUSTION/OVERUSE.

Give me those sweet side effects of overusing magic:

Getting lightheaded and weak, struggling to stand let alone keep fighting

"Are you ok?" "Yeah I'm fine. *immediately faceplants because their legs can't support their weight anymore*"

F a i n t i n g

Physical injuries like burns, broken bones, etc

The risk of permanent damage either physically or mentally

Can I get uuuuhhhhh "loses a sense either temporarily or permanently depending on the severity of the overuse"?

Stopping their heart (cue the team scrambling to drag their dumbass friend back from death)

THERE'S SO MUCH YOU CAN DO AND I SO RARELY SEE IT.

I am not immune to the trope of "character overextends themselves in a bout of god-like power and immediately passes out afterwards".

Bonus points if they do a superhero landing and / or crack a one liner before collapsing.

Double bonus points if right before they collapse into a puddle the last thing they see is their friends / love interest sprinting towards them at high velocity.
