*mash is back on the internet archive*
hello, everyone! i was able to download and upload the entire series (which was too difficult, holy hell), and it is now available to watch.
i'm also going to upload the series with closed captioning in english and spanish! (si! se habla español.)
please let me know if there are any issues with the uploads. if, god forbid, it's taken down again, i'm very prepared to put it all back up.
if y'all have any suggestions, please leave those as well. (like if you'd like for me to put it on another shared drive, convert it to a different video player, etc.)

"Frank is the type of character I personally despise...It's a matter of ego but I think I'm doing a service by delineating this type of person. You know, so you'll be able to recognize him."

I explain MASH to my Criminal Minds friends by saying âWritten and Directed by Alan Aldaâ is the 70s equivalent to âWritten and Directed by Matthew Gray Gublerâ and without fail it clicks. Iâve gotten at least 3 people hooked on MASH this way.
âthe late cpt. pierce written and directed by alan Aldaâ oh im Sure

i have to admit, my favorite way to watch mash is to imagine it's the second or third or even seventh time these events have happened. sometimes Hawkeye is aware of it, but sometimes he isn't. some episodes, he knows he's about to watch someone die or have the worst day of his life, again. he knows exactly where every piece of shrapnel is inside some 16 year old kid because he's picked out every piece of shrapnel from this 16 year old kid fifteen times already. he knows who dies and he still tries everything to save them. some episodes, he has no idea he's trying in vain to save someone he's never been able to save before, and may never be able to save. he's going to try everything. he can't help but try everything. and the food doesn't get better, either

Never not thinking about when the (beloved) priest in MASH said
âWhen the doctors cut into a patient⊠and itâs cold, the way it is now today⊠steam will rise from the body. And the doctor will warm his hands over the open wound. How could anybody look upon that and not feel changed?â

worst ways to watch mash
- alphabetical order by episode title
- watch âDreamsâ and nothing else and carry on assuming the whole show was like that
- watch the top-rated IMDb episodes first and experience âAbyssinia, Henryâ before anything else
- season 11 -> AfterMASH seasons 1-2 -> W*A*L*T*E*R Pilot -> seasons 1-10
- by writer, in alphabetical order by last name. Start with all the Aldas, Wilcox last and so on
- watch the whole show through TikTok clips
- only watch the first three seasons and then abandon it and assume the rest is bad
- only watch episodes that pass the bechdel test
- experience the show peripherally through mutuals on tumblr

Bottle Fatigue (S8x16) might be one of my favorite combination of A and B plots. Itâs basically Hawkeye having an ADHD crash out after sobering up and Charles having a crash out over his sister getting engaged to an Italian man in front of Alan Alda, an Italian man, and both of them drive everyone insane. Just two girl failures. Itâs amazing that they are some of the best surgeons in Korea at the time bc theyâre both idiots

Iâll be real, seeing Hawkeye in Bottle Fatigue is just another piece of evidence for my conspiracy theory wall of âHawkeye has an insane case of high-functioning ADHDâ and itâs such a fascinating case study.
Like within the timeline of the show (early 1950s) ADHD/ADD didnât even exist as a diagnosis yet, and even tho there were some physicians that noted ADHD-like symptoms most documentation was primarily concerning children. Even when MASH was airing ADHD was not accepted into the DSM until 1980 and again it was primarily focused on children, so Hawkeye from a Watsonian or Doylist perspective, whether itâs from within the show and from the audienceâs perspective, Hawkeye is just like a guy. Definitely a wacky kinda guy, but a guy. Heâs not defined by a diagnosis bc the diagnosis didnât even exist yet. It was just kinda accepted that hey sometimes there are people who cannot sit still and who constantly move around and always are talking and thatâs ok, this guy does that and heâs pretty cool, heâs actually a top surgeon and hella funny.
The downside is that so much of the negative of ADHD is also present and if anything is exacerbated by the war. Like Hawkeye has a bleeding heart, he cares so much about people that it hurts and itâs what makes his mental state so fragile sometimes, and clearly has trouble leaving people as seem at the end of the show and when Trapper leaves. That matches with ADHD and emotional dysfunction, where people with ADHD can feel emotions to their extreme. Obviously in Bottle Fatigue Hawkeye gets super hyperactive and like is running all over the place before everyone else which drives everyone else crazy (which could be kinda explained by everyone else being kinda hungover, but also like dude wants to play golf??? that shit takes forever my guy he must really need to do something if heâs up at like 6 trying to play a couple rounds) . On the topic of alcohol, people with ADHD, especially undiagnosed people, have higher rates of drug and alcohol abuse, typically because they use substances to cope or as a form of self-medication, something we see Hawkeye doing as a way to help cope with the war, and he has a larger tab than everyone else, meaning he probably drinks more.
Like ADHD is a part of you, so ADHD is like intrinsically part of the good in Hawkeye, the quick wit, the humor, the deep moral compass, the compassion for others, but itâs also connected to his flaws, his impulsiveness, his need to self medicate with alcohol, his fragile psyche. Itâs a very good representation of ADHD and ADHD didnât even exist yet when he was being written. I love this man so much and he doesnât even exist
