Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Countdown: 4 Days to Go!

Less than 4 days to go until the movie premieres, and today I will feature the Three-Headed Dog on this blog. 

The Three-Headed Dog is not featured in the textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, though the beast is a key plot point in the very first Harry Potter book and movie. It looks much like its name suggests, a dog with three heads, though it is much larger than the average dog. The Three-Headed Dog is most widely known from Greek mythology as the guardian of the gates to the underworld, Cerberus. The beast is easily subdued when it hears music, falling asleep once the music starts and staying asleep so long as the music continues.

The Three-Headed Dog appeared only in the first book and movie, but played a very important role. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville discover the beast while running from Filch so as not to be caught out of bed after hours. They wind up in the forbidden area on the third floor with the snarling dog and only just escape. 

Later they realize the dog must be guarding something since it is standing on a trapdoor, and find out that it is Hagrid’s dog, which he has named Fluffy. Harry and his friends soon find out that the dog is guarding the Philosopher’s (Sorcerer’s Stone) and think Severus Snape is trying to steal it for Voldemort, coming to the conclusion that the only obstacle Snape cannot get past yet is Fluffy. 

Unfortunately, Hagrid accidentally reveals to the kids that Fluffy goes to sleep anytime it hears music, and they know that now the Stone must be protected. The trio plays music for Fluffy to lull him to sleep, and the head through the trapdoor, hoping to stop the theft of the Stone.

As the Three-Headed Dog is quite rare, and already has been featured, I doubt that it will make an appearance in the new movies. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy some art of Fluffy!
