did indeed reread some vampires and still unsure what to think. toppei's more violent than i remember, there's still the rules vs anarchy thing going on, didn't get to any of the meat of ruriko and the revolutionaries stuff

AND ANOTHER THING—

There are two types of "extremism bad :(" stories. The first is latest doctor who episode style, where it's "violence is bad peace is good :)." The second is more devious, where it's "these extremists go too far so their whole (usually valid) message is unsound." Is Vampires the 2nd type?

Toppei and Chippei don't advocate for vampire rights peacefully, they just completely side with the humans. BUT. siding with the humans bites them, especially toppei, in the ass, because the humans want ALL vampires gone, and even though toppei cooperates with the police, he's still shot at.

I'm not sure. This would require more research and rereading.

This is where I'll also point out that Vampires (part I) is, intentionally imo, a tragedy. Nothing is fixed. Toppei, our protagonist—the guy we want to see win— loses. He, Chippei, his mom, and any remaining vampires are forced back into hiding. Not to mention what happened to everyone else: half the cast is dead and Rock has a fucking nervous breakdown. It's a sad ending! It leaves a weird taste in your mouth! It makes you think!

i was cooking with these questions and even though i answered them already maybe i should revisit

because whether or not you consider vampires a "race," they're still a historically oppressed minority, and that comes with allllll the baggage. tezuka attempts to write for this, but i think he wants to have his cake and eat it too and have the vampires be both a political movement and fun scary monsters. he wrote vampires at a very turbulent time in global history, one full of protests and riots and political upheavals; he's clearly trying to do some commentary. and i can't tell if the mess is from his ass being too Liberal (derogatory), or a mix of his typical crazy work schedule and appeasing his target audience. probably a bit of both
