Vet School Diaries: Episode One (The Welcome Party)

Also known as "The One Where Everyone Finds Their Soulmate (Except the One Who Doesn't Want One)"

Renowned vet Heather Gordon's Buttercup Vet School began with a welcome mixer at the Salty Paw, her sister and sister-in-law's bar and cafe in Fisherman's Wharf. Hazel and Suri weren't around today, but the bar was staffed and ready for the students.

The first to arrive was erratic Chestnut Ridge rancher Sean Jackson, who quickly remembered where he was and stopped trying to bathe in Brindleton Bay's early autumn rain.

Sean had a secret, and his early arrival gave him a chance to clear the air with the head of the vet program.

Sean: I just don't want them thinking because I signed a contract with your brother to grow Nesbeets that I'm here on any kind of special treatment.

Heather agreed to keep his secret. She liked the entrepreneurial rancher and wanted him to feel at ease during his time here. They also bonded over their mischief skills and this shared deception!

Prior to the arrival of the other students, neat freak Sean would've made Heather's husband, Conrad, proud: Not only will he clean your bar table for free, he'll completely ignore your personal space to do it!

The rest of the students slowly trickled in until the bar was full. Everyone, even loner Monica "Mo" Lowe, enjoyed getting to know their housemates for the program. The attraction pings were off the charts because these sims have so many traits in common - so much so that everyone found a soulmate!

I think the mod might need some adjusting but what do I really know? This could be fate or a trick but I'm not pushing them - we'll see what happens!

Karla Glynnan spotted former med student Andre Sylvester and thought, 'Yup.' Unfortunately she thought he was annoying, because Andre is kind of non-committal with women (but he never misses a call with his mama!) and while Karla flirted with him, he was pretty much oblivious.

Karla also has a secret, but unlike Sean, she's not sharing with anyone. Not even Andre - maybe especially not even Andre, who comes from a storyverse where occults don't even exist. He'd never believe half the stuff the Glynnans have been through!

Heather was a big fan of Toby, and Gord (who is definitely in this save!) autonomously showed up to say hello to him, too!!

Ben Austin, who came to Brindleton Bay from Willow Creek with his lab, Toby, noticed a shy girl sitting at a table by herself. This woman was beautiful; Ben was glad he was already sitting down so she couldn't knock him off his feet!!

Nora York was content to keep to herself, and living in a house full of strangers was out of her comfort zone. But she smiled back at Ben - could this be the start of something big for these impact-conscious sims, or will Nora's aloofness hold them back? (Shy, loner, unattracted = aloof!)

Outgoing Imran Feldman-Lewis, an aromantic ace sim with no soulmate and absolutely fine with that) got up to invite Nora over to their table. She declined, but eventually she was spotted enjoying the dance floor. And they both discovered new sides to their personality!

Possible clone Quinn McAlister wasn't the only student attracted to retro queen Ginger Bread. Every one of her fellow students was attracted to Ginger, and Ginger returned the favour maybe a third of the time, as is the prerogative of any queen!

Mo was crushing on Ginger instantly, and lo! Soulmates. It might be real love, and these two gorgeous girls have Henford backgrounds in common, in addition to a love of animals. Did retro-obsessed Ginger just step into her own version of The Love Boat? Maybe! But this time, the "ship" is docked in Brindleton Bay!

(Failed to get a shot of the two of them together inside the bar, so we'll skip ahead to their first day in student housing, because this was the moment Ginger got her attracted ping even though the soulmates mod went off the night before.)

Erratic hot-head Sean didn't sign up for romance. He was here to learn how to care for animals back on his farm, but when Rubi Aikyo Herr - the last to arrive - walked in the door, he stopped in his tracks. He had to talk to the raven-haired beauty!

The pair chatted for a while at one of the tables, checking in with Heather as she made the rounds to get to know the students. Rubi was well acquainted with Sean's home in Chestnut Ridge - her mother, Yellow, was born there and her grandfather still lived at the Herr family ranch.

These two were very attracted to one another, but maybe it was a good thing, this early on, that Rubi was distracted when erratic Sean had one of his...episodes...right there at the table.

That leaves us with our last - surprising - soulmate pairing. Perhaps because Colt is openly gay and Quinn is pretty sure he's straight - and attracted to plenty of his female housemates. This may be a case of bro Quinn failing to embrace new and unexpected feelings.

But will smoldering Colt welcome Quinn's sexual awakening, or will he get tired of waiting for him to figure things out? These two shared great laughs for most of the evening - Colt forgot all about his departed Border Collie, Candy, for one night!

As the night wore on, active sims Imran and Colt did pushups in the bar, which was a sign Heather needed to officially welcome these students and get them situated in their renovated building on the waterfront.

Heather: Thank you so much, to all of you, for trusting me with your education and signing up for the first ever Buttercup Vet School. Hopefully tonight was the first of many memories you'll make here, in this beautiful town my family and I love so much. I hope you'll come away with friends for life and the confidence to run your own clinic, and I want you all to know I'm here to help you succeed.

Then the game reminded everyone why we're here.

Tomorrow, students head to their first day of class (necessary before they'll see any clinical training) and continue to get acquainted with each other in their temporary home. ->

I promised Zen this wasn't a Love Island-style save where everyone just pairs off romantically and that 👏 is 👏 still 👏 true 👏 even though the mod truly came to play! If you don't vibe with your sim's divine selection, any soulmates can be ignored or forgotten once sims are back in your saves. I'm also saying yes for the most part - new likes and dislikes pop up? Yes! Personality changes or new traits? Yes! Don't like the changes? It's just a phase during their time at vet school!

If you're reading my legacy, you also know I sometimes reject the Soulmates mod (if I didn't, Heather would have married Malcolm Landgraab!) I'll play through some drama, but soulmates don't always live happily ever after...

(127) A Legacy in the Waiting

Nathaniel eventually aged up to an adult, and the girls were close to being young adults. Their father never wanted to find another woman after Victoria. No one could fill her shoes. He was happier alone than with someone else, and he happily spent all his time doing everything for his daughters. Of course they missed Victoria, and they always would. But in time, they found ways to live with that missing, carrying her love with them as they learned how to go on.

First and foremost, thank you so much if you managed to get this far in my story! I can't believe this generation of my sims is now done. Playing through this has gone by so quickly. I've grown to love these sims so much. Victorias' fate was definitely not easy to write about, but I hope I did her justice in terms of the way it ended. I hope you've enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed playing, and who knows, maybe we'll see the twins in a future story!

(123) Birthday Celebration

Today was the twins birthday, and they were finally aging up to teenagers! Everyone came to visit and celebrate. It was their first birthday celebration without Victoria, but everyone tried their best to keep the mood up.

Kieran: Malvina, keep an eye on Alexander will you, that stuff is strong! Alexander: Relax, I don't even like this, but your mother insisted I try the family recipe.

A bit later that evening when everyone had left and the twins were asleep...

Nathaniel: Hey, darling... It was the twins' birthday today. You know that of course. You'd be proud of them. Louisa got frosting in her hair and my mother insisted your brother Alexander should try that disgusting nectar from the family recipe. He hated it, but he wanted to be polite. I could tell. I tried it myself so I know it's disgusting. Anyway... Everyone came. Even your mom. It was nice, I guess. But... it wasn't right without you. You know... I still look for you sometimes. In crowds, in dreams. It's stupid, I know...

Ravendancer couldn’t help Victoria, no matter how desperately she tried. It was over. The Reaper had ignored all rules of death and given Victoria a limited time in this form, even though she had no unfinished business anymore. Something in her couldn't leave just yet. So, one night, she passed through the walls of her home for the first time since it happened, standing silently at the edge of each of her daughters beds. They were both peacefully at sleep, but she felt their deep sorrow.

"I couldn't face them like this. Not again. He held me once when I was gone. And I saw the way his soul cracked. If I showed up now... it would only break him further.

They don’t deserve hauntings of the past. They deserve life, not hope tethered to a ghost. He sleeps on my side. Still dreams I'll come back. And tonight... I really wanted to. My love, I gave everything to protect you, to protect them. And I'd do it again.

And for my children, love does not shield us from tragedy; it invites it. Not because it is cruel, but because it is real. To love is to open the door to loss and pain. Hurt doesn’t exist in spite of love… It exists because of it. Remember it is a privilege to love and to hurt.

I guess I was never meant to stay forever. Just long enough to love you. And I did. Completely. Tell them I'm just on the other side of the stars."

Lady Ravendancer rushed to the Magic Realm as soon as she heard the news of a fight.

Lady Ravendancer: Running again, Malrick? You should have stayed hidden in Glimmerbrook for the rest of eternity! Malrick: Look who’s here. The Lady who’s too weak to finish her own fights. You cursed your own family for nothing, now look what happened! You failed her. Lady Ravendancer: No. I gave them the time I didn't have. And she - my blood, my legacy - faced you alone. Braver than you have ever been!

Malrick was about to run away, but Lady Ravendancers magic held on to him…

Lady Ravendancer: I cursed my future to get rid of you. This time, I don't need time, though. I may be weak now, but so are you, Malrick.

Lady Ravendancer’s powers was just enough to hit Malrick one last time. She shattered his essence and ended him. The curse that once bound him to the shadows of Glimmerbrook now consumed him entirely. His name, his power, even his very soul was snuffed out like a dying flame.

The Reaper: There's a special place for souls like his. And I promise you it's not nice there. Let me take over Victorine. It's finished now.

Cross into the beyond, where sorrow can't follow - or remain on this side in your new form for a limited time, if your heart still holds unfinished threads.
