quick invidious guide

there's apparently a youtube boycott going? i've seen people recommending frontends like freetube and newpipe—i'm pretty sure newpipe and its forks use the official api, which means youtube still sees that people are watching. invidious is a frontend i've used in the past, so here's a short little guide in case you have stuff you wanna catch up on.

what is invidious?

invidious is a self-hosted thingy that lets you watch youtube videos. as far as i know, it scrapes stuff from youtube rather than sending api requests, which means no data will be sent to youtube when you watch stuff on invidious.

how do i use it?

unless you're a techy person, you'll probably wanna watch on a public instance. there's a list of public instances here—i've had a decent bit of luck with inv.nadeko.net in the past.

some instances also let you make accounts, which you can use to see your watch history and stuff.

quick disclaimer, i've sometimes had issues with videos not loading or loading very slowly. it could just be because of where i live? i'd recommend choosing an instance closer to you. inv.nadeko.net also has various backends in different locations.

youtube also hates invidious specifically and will sometimes block video pages from loading. it sucks ass, but if you really wanna watch something you can probably just browse on invidious, grab the link, and then download with yt-dlp or a site like ytmp3.cx
