been watching a lot of videos of VRChat culture lately and it’s so fascinating. it’s this culmination of social isolation + poor emotional regulation + anonymity + other such factors that create this environment of people constantly enabling each other & allows for bigotry and grooming etc etc in this horrible cycle. it’s a bunch of lonely adults that for whatever reason do not / can not function on their own or are socially outcast for whatever reason seeking attention and validation from other people like them. and lonely kids that are likely being neglected going to aforementioned adults for attention and care and whatever else. and like. i don’t know i had a convo with ferris about it but im too nauseous to articulate all of my thoughts well it’s just all very interesting and should be studied . VRChat users bring up something called “phantom sense” or “phantom pain” (separate from the phenomenon with amputees) a lot; it’s where someone is on VR so much that they can really “feel” what happens to their avatars in VR in real life. a lot of this is over exaggerated. they’ll get really upset when someone walks through their avatar because of their phantom sense, but refuse to turn on the “personal space” option that makes it so people can’t walk through you. i saw a video of a girl over-the-top hyperventilating and pretending to pass out because someone threw tomatoes at her in VR and she’s allergic to tomatoes IRL and claimed that her phantom sense gave her an allergic reaction irl and her throat closed up. i saw someone talking about being phantom raped i’m VR. i’ve seen people talk about phantom pregnancy. it’s wild. a lot of people on VR also get very racist very fast when they get upset. i don’t think it’s a moral failing to be on VR a lot it’s just Fascinating the subculture of it all

i almost cried earlier because a kid that comes in here a lot said he’s going horse riding with his boyfriend this summer and then said that’s the first time he’s said out loud that he has a boyfriend and me and the other two kids in the room went YAYY AWESOME and the kids started dancing because they were all gay. i know the first kid’s parents are bigoted and he’s homeschooled so it was a lot of emotions
