So I put in some hours of last-minute crunch time for Uprising on Legendary and

I actually met people who actually communicated via voice chat or were at least actually tuned into the voice channel?

People who were actually nice? And encouraging?

Who were actually willing to stick around for another round (and another round, and another round) because “wow we were so close that round, let’s do it again”?

Like, we actually worked together? And those who could made call outs via voice?

And we cracked jokes and laughed about stuff in the meanwhile? Like about our sprays and our spam crouching and that time our Rein accidentally ult’ed when nothing was around and was like, “Oops, that’s not the ‘W’ button”?

Dude, one guy stayed grouped with me for five fucking hours. From 1AM until SIX IN THE GODDAMN MORNING (we’re in the same time zone — I’ve just always been a night owl). And he was like, “Oh, it’s no problem at all! It’s actually the fastest time yet that I’ve beaten Legendary!” Dude. Duuuude. I friended him so hard.

Anyway, the four of us, we actually beat Legendary, mothereffin’ Legendary, together with literally 10 seconds left? (My first ever win aww yiiisss — and I even got a Mercy POTG in the end AWWWW YISSS)

And one guy was like, “Good job, guys! And also one girl,” which was blessedly the only acknowledgement of my gender and I just laughed into the mic because I was actually comfortable enough with these guys that I was actually talking using voice chat the whole time? Do you know how unprecedented that is for me?

And I even became friends with some of them and we parted with promises to play together sometime?

Is this... Is this my faith in humanity being restored?

‘Cuz it feels so goddamn glorious.

I just did a 1v1 where my opponent and I battled it out to a tense 4-4 with the entire match teetering on this one last round.

“Let us be Widowmakers,” I remember saying as a joke earlier in the match.

RNG rolls us into Widowmakers for the final round.

“UHHHHHH,” is my intelligent response.

Doors open. “UHHHHH.”

Opponent and I hook onto opposite platforms at same time. “Oh! UHHHHH.”

We both scope in, take our shot. They miss.

I hit. Boom. Headshot. “UHHHHHH...?”

Round is over in literally 5 seconds. I win, going “UHHHHHH” the whole time.

And that’s how I won a 1v1 match today.

So I spent about $40 on Uprising lootboxes and 90% of them were nothing but normals, rares, and dupes.

No combat medic Mercy? No cute af cadet Tracer? Lieutenant Reinhardt? Skins I actually wanted?

OH WELL, AT LEAST I GOT TORBJORN’S LEGENDARY THOUGH. BOTH. OF. THEM.

How Overwatch characters try to impress their crush (pt. 2)

(featuring Soldier 76, D.Va, and Pharah)

Soldier 76

needless to say it’s not his edgy yet not edgy persona that does it

he’s the type that subconsciously does things to look impressive in front of you before he even realizes what exactly he’s doing

while he may not compare with Reinhardt or Zarya in terms of pure muscle strength, it’s certainly nothing to sneeze at due to his training and the SEP enhancements and so he’ll show off in other ways

like he’ll be casual with the way he slings around his heavy pulse rifle around you, holding it in place with one arm or toting it around on a shoulder like it doesn’t weigh much

oh this old thing? Nah it’s nothing I can’t handle

some mornings he stops by in the canteen where you are, having just come off from running a good number of laps around the base 

it’s a good opportunity for you to admire his physique without the jacket and to show you that age hasn’t slowed him down and that he can still keep up with the younger ones

he tends to look out for you during missions (and is usually the first to volunteer to go get you out when the situation get sticky)

when he does realize what he’s doing (or the more likely scenario: Ana or Mercy point it out to him while giving him a funny look), he’ll go through a bit of a “oh no I have feelings for someone” crisis

you’ll notice him suddenly withdrawing from you without explanation and be confused by it

he may accept that he has a crush on you or suppress it, but either way, he’ll keep it a secret while he low-key (on purpose or unconsciously) continues to try to impress you

D.Va

she invites you to a routine maintenance check of her mech; it’s an opportunity to hang out but also to show off her knowledge as she points out the various parts and tells you what they do and how they work

you’d think she’d take advantage of her gaming prowess to impress you, but it’s surprisingly not the case; while she’s got an undeniable competitive streak, she's usually more focused on just having a good time when gaming casually with friends

she will never use her fame to try to impress you

for one, she feels like doing that devalues and degrades her fans (something she never wants to do), and secondly, she’s met enough douchebaggy content creators in her life who are elitist about their number of subscribers and view counts and whatnot to be sick of it

what ends up impressing you, however, is how she does treat her fans, especially the fans who recognize her in public and approach her

Hana is always super enthusiastic when they ask to shake hands or for an autograph, and if they ask to take a selfie together, she even asks them to tag her so she can share it on her Twitter

sometimes there’s the occasional fan who’s so anxious and nervous about meeting their idol that they start shaking and apologize over and over again for being a mess, on the verge of tears

Hana finds a place to sit and sits down with them until they can calm down and she starts chatting away until she coaxes a smile out of them; she brushes off the “sorry”s and just acts super excited about being able to meet them and makes sure the fan doesn’t feel like they’re unwelcome at all

there are also times when fans confess to Hana about their struggles and how her streams and online presence cheered them up and encouraged them, and she holds their hand while thanking them for their courage with a watery smile: “I’m so glad you’re here.”

what Hana doesn’t know is that it’s that side of her that has utterly charmed you

not until you tell her after the two of you start going out; she’s caught off guard but very happy

Pharah

the type to fret about it because she’s always wondering what you think of her whenever she does anything

like oh my god, I just slumped into the kitchen in my pyjamas because I really needed the coffee and they saw me. Should I have changed properly first? Do they think I’m a slob now??

needless to say, she’s a bit of a mess in the romance department (you and me both, Pharah, you and me both)

her idea of impressing you is making sure you know that you have her protection during missions, going a little overboard with lines like “I’ll protect you!” or “I have your back!” or “I’ve got you covered!”

and you’re just like, “Yes, Fareeha, so you’ve said multiple times now??”

sometimes senior agents who are listening in to the team comms and know her (like Ana, Torbjorn, or 76) facepalm

however, you soon learn that she takes her words and especially her oath to protect very seriously

particularly when a mission goes spectacularly awry and you find yourself being pulled out of rubble by her even when there’s still a lot of danger present and others are yelling at her to pull back

good job pharah I'm so proud

she shrugs off any praise you offer her, however, secretly too embarrassed and/or giddy to accept them

she also may or may not discreetly pose *ahem* hypothetical questions (so like, are flowers too lame nowadays? Too forward? Too uninspired? What would they say about someone as a person, hypothetically speaking?) to her mother, to suss out some advice from her

Ana innocently and good-naturedly gives her opinions on the questions

but Ana knows what’s up and frankly finds it hilarious

Hanzo

this guy is the type who will just ‘happen to be’ where you are a lot, always placing himself in your peripheral view in the hopes that you will notice him — very much like what a shy, awkward preteen does (hey, that was my go-to strat back in the day)

like oh, you’re at the canteen? Then he’ll be sitting over there, just enjoying his tea of course. You’re in the common room playing games with the others? He’ll happen to be there, obviously only because he was looking for Genji. Yep.

he ups this strat especially when he sees you at the training grounds; he’ll be doing his own thing, and if that just happens to include pushing himself to scale taller walls and weaving into complex maneuvers with grace and fluidity whenever you happen to look his way, then it’s simply a coincidence but thank you for the praise even tho it was totes not a big deal or anything

this dude plays it cool and tries to be so ridiculously subtle that not only does it go completely over your head, it also tips into ‘painfully obvious’ territory for one person... Genji

“Brother... please, for the love of everything good in the world... just go up and talk to them.” “I do not know what you are talking about, Genji.” “*under his breath* Yeah, as fucking if.” “What was that?” “Hm? Oh, nothing, brother.”

If, by some miracle, the two of you do become good friends, then what he does changes

he’ll start giving you these gifts every once in a while

sometimes they’re quite lavish and you’re like umm Hanzo are you sure I can accept this, but they’re always super thoughtful??

like one time he gave you this dainty little jade hair comb, except if you futz with it a little it essentially turns into a shiv to shank someone with — how fucking cool is that??

it’s very sweet, especially as he turns red as he hands you these gifts

Symmetra

tbh she's not really one to actively try to impress someone, even a crush

both bc she’s not sure how that works and bc she’s a firm believer that if it’s meant to be, then it’s meant to be

but if she were to try, then she’ll attempt to appeal to you with something she’s familiar with using and has pride in: her intellect

she’ll talk about her work a lot when with you, sharing the finer details and her thought processes in the various designs she’s created (apart from the projects in-progress, due to confidentiality)

apart from impressing you, in a way it’s also to test your compatibility; while she doesn’t need you to understand absolutely everything or even remember much, she would like you to recognize how important and interesting it is to her and so it would be nice if you showed some interest in that (for example, ask questions!)

eventually as your friendship progresses and her crush on you deepens, she’ll start giving you these little design prototypes as trinkets

at first they have her unmistakable crisp and clean design signature, but then she starts playing around with the core design and it shows, changing into something quite different

she says it’s because she was making them with you in mind

she’s not sure why you went all embarrassed and bashful (yet insisting that you really like them) at hearing her say that, but she’s pleased with the results nonetheless

Widowmaker

she won’t recklessly try to impress you in the battlefield, not like those silly men do; she’s here to calmly complete her objectives, after all, not pull off flashy kills and whatnot for hubris’ sake

although if you find yourself in trouble and there’s no one else around to bust you out, she will swing in on her grappling hook and grab you, taking you both to higher ground and saving you just in the nick of time

what she doesn’t tell you is that she might tend to wait juuuuuuust a little longer than you would probably appreciate before finally swooping in, all in order to create that perfect heart-stopping timing

she’s the type who will want to always appear cool and perpetually unruffled whenever you see her, even as she (totally singlehandedly, of course, totes not with the help of Sombra pulling some strings in the background) thwarts your various attempts to capture her (assuming you work for Overwatch)

while she doesn’t amp up on the flashiness of her kills (since mostly the difficulty of her shots serve to please her own adrenaline-seeking needs and to complete her missions, not to impress you), she does get fancier with the use of her grappling hook around you

especially if she can show off her amazing legs posture from her time as a ballerina

she also has impeccable fashion sense, so in the event you ever see her in more casual clothes, there’s that
