Humans are Just a Stack of Donuts, and Here’s Why:
Biology class certainly brings up multiple questions within each lesson; whether that be about vaccines, reproduction or how the human body works. Take for example, the digestive system; and how it breaks down something like an apple fritter into nutrients and calories for your cells. And with that, this essay discusses why the human digestive system is similar to a stack of donuts.
First of all, let’s talk about the history of donuts. These lovely pastries supposedly first appeared during the eighteenth century via the Dutch of New Amsterdam. Back then, they were referred to as olykoeks: oily cakes. In the nineteenth century, Elizabeth Gregory had fried flavored dough with walnuts for her son Hanson Gregory, hence the name “doughnut”. By the late nineteenth century, this pastry had a hole. Though, the name-sake of this pastry is often debated over, along with the spelling: donuts vs. doughnuts.
Now, with that unnecessary history lesson, we move onto the similarities between humans and donuts. Upon first glance, you may not think a donut and a human have any similarities to one another. One is a very tasty pastry you obtain at a coffee shop, while another is a sad college student working at said coffee shop. Though, I assure you that there is much we have in common with these lovely baked goods. Take for example, the shape of the esophagus.
The esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the pharynx (throat) to the stomach. It contains multiple muscles within it to help contact and relax to push the food from your mouth down into your stomach - a process that is referred to as peristalsis. Though a stack of donuts is definitely unable to go through this process, the mere looks alone portray a few similarities to the human esophagus. Both the esophagus and a donut are ring shaped, and contain multiple layers of either donut or muscle.
Another similarity the human digestive system and a stack of donuts have is that they both are practically just tubes. For the digestive system, the tube extends from your mouth all the way down to your rectum. Any blockage in any portion of the digestive system would result in death, or at the very least, major discomfort. And stacking donuts - with the exception of jelly-filled ones - creates a tube-like structure that has a clear pathway in the donut holes. Just as the human digestive system has a clear pathway for food.
In conclusion, donuts and humans may have their differences, but they are quite similar in their appearance. Donuts may only be a tasty pastry that does not live and breathe, though it can be argued that the yeast used to make them were once living creatures, just like humans. And though clearly illegal in numerous countries, and morally wrong, humans are indeed edible. Perhaps there is more the human race and donuts have in common than one would believe. So, the next time you go out to buy a donut at your favourite bakery or coffee shop, just remember one thing: that baked good may or may not be one of your distant yeast relatives.

If you can’t tell, I really like DEH lol. This is a poster I made in class again: the prompt was to make a concert or movie poster, and though I really wanted to do a Ben Platt poster, I ended up doing a DEH one.
