If ghosts were a thing they would clearly count as some sort of development stage of the human, where they "molt", losing all their bones and flesh, to allow a ectoplasmic stage of life to occur

Ghosts are neither vertebrates nor invertebrates, because a human losing all their bones would not taxonomically cease to be a chordate, but a ghost has been separated from the body altogether and has no place where bones are supposed to go, in much the same way that one kidney couldn't be called a vertebrate either.

We all know that but I dare suggest that an animate skeleton also isn't either of those things as its bones are no longer part of the system that constitutes an animal at all. Would you call a dead spinal column all by itself a vertebrate? Of course not. A vertebrate is someone who possesses and utilizes bones that their body grew, or was genetically supposed to do so anyway. Having bones and being bones are not the same thing at all.

Monsters are often a metaphor for toxic/dangerous/abusive people in your life, but don't be fooled! Monsterfuckers are NOT trying to fuck those people. Monsterfuckers are trying to fuck the metaphor. They're trying to metaphuck and monsterfuck at the same time, and we must keep letting them get away with it!

Meanwhile Gregor is attempting the opposite. Gregor is a monster fucker (note the space!) attempting to fuck the actual toxic/dangerous/abusive people in your life to keep them occupied so they don't bother you and so nobody else fucks them by mistake. Whether we should let Gregor keep getting away with this heroic act of depravity is nuanced.
