anyway once again having feelings about charles and crystal and wanting what you cannot have and the growing process of learning that the people you think will fill that hole in your chest won't (and can't) and it's not either of your faults but that doesn't change that you were a mess of awful timing and that maybe, just maybe, someday you can be friends again and see each other as you are and that it won't hurt like a wound but rather like a fading bruise

i was today years old when I realized that the lantern in the attic scene is not perfectly centered between them but actually slightly closer to Charles, which makes sense because he's the one that needs the warmth and the light that is being leeched out of him by death

(also the feelings that i have about the fact that Edwin brought the lantern and is giving Charles warmth and light and reassurance in his final moments. because Charles died with his best friend, going so gently toward his death that he was willing to trade heaven for the boy who crawled out of hell because Edwin was the greatest kindness Charles had ever felt in life and he wanted to spend eternity with that warmth)
