Experimenting with Sewing: Backpack III
Now that I have the backpack design and I want to perfect the construction. One of the biggest flaws in the previous backpack projects was the inability for the pack to hold its shape. For this project I will be adding a thick interfacing in between the outer canvas and the inner lining. This will make the backpack panels thicker, and hopefully it will stand up on its own.

All the pieces cut out.

Panels with thick interfacing. I received the quilted interfacing after replying to a Craigslist ad from a studio in the garment district giving away lots of fabric.

Sewing on the front panel to the sides.

Sewing on the back.

Finished Backpack.

Finished backpack.

Improving the Backpack - 5 whys and in the context of my own personal dystopia
The modern day backpack hasn’t been improved upon since 1938. For almost 100 years we’ve bought the same design modified slightly over and over again without seeing very much innovation. On one hand I understand the backpack’s slow progress - a utilitarian object meant to hold things. But on the other hand I see so much room for improvement. Let’s ask the 5 whys.
Why should the backpack be redesigned?
Because there hasn’t been any major improvements/innovations to the backpack since 1938. Why?
Because the backpack has served one primary function throughout it’s lifespan. Why?
Because they’ve only been used to carry things. Why?
Because people have always needed to carry things. Why?
Because people
What are some ways that the backpack could be improved?
Straps designed for comfort - making the backpack a more enjoyable experience.
GPS tracking device integrated into the bag for navigation/if its ever lost or stolen.
Backpack that turns into other things - serving more than one purpose i.e. table, sleeping bag, tent, etc
Lights installed on the inside - when you open your bag you have the ability to see what’s inside.
LED display on the outside - used as signal to others or to throw off robots.
In the context of my future dystopia, the backpack will need to serve several functions. A nomadic tribe of musician artist warriors who are on the run from futuristic robots will need versatile bags that can hold artisan tools, weapons, and also serve a means of communication to other tribesman. They will also need to be able to turn into other utilitarian things such as sleeping bags and tents. Custom bags will need to be created to suit each tribesman’s needs and have an LED face that can be used as a warning signal, disguise, and/or form of entertainment in their down time.

Future Dystopia Free Writing
Idea 1
The entire world is controlled by one government. Countries no longer exist and English is a global language that everyone is required to speak.
Jobs as we know them now do not exist in 2092. Robots and AI software will have replaced 95% of jobs. Manufacturing will all be done by robots and all other white collar jobs will be replaced by AI software. Human beings will receive a monthly universal basic income for their basic human needs like food and clothing, and our day to day lives will look much differently than they do today. Currency will be loaded onto microchips that are implanted into peoples wrists. Presently when you ask someone what they do they respond with their occupation. “I’m a lawyer” or “I work for a bank.” Our occupations make up a huge portion of our identity. People find a completely new way to identify themselves in a world where there is no need for an occupation.
People will fall into two categories. Complacent people and creative people. There will be a large portion of the population who are happy to receive their universal basic income who do little with their days other than exist in VR, eat drink and sleep. The other main category of people will be creators. People who spend all their newly found freedom creating art, and music. For this category the end of the 21st century and beginning of the 22nd century will be like the renaissance era all over again. Creators will band together forming a new society. The universal basic income will be almost meaningless as these people will reject this form of currency, coming up with their own barter system where everyone has a trade or craft that they use for survival. This category of people will form a resistance against a fascist and restrictive world government that is controlled by only a handful of people at the top.
This World Government will have an army of robots that control the people and try to stop the creators. They will meet in secret, spread information on paper and handwritten notes and leaflets. Since everything digitally will be monitored, the creators will have to do everything offline. There will be a place where the creators exist outside of this governmental
What people don’t know is that now that they aren’t needed, they are slowly being killed off. The family at the top that owns everything is realizing that with no need for a working economy, there is no need for human beings. Food is provided for people in the form of nutritional bars that are rationed out on a monthly basis. At a certain point all the nutritional bars are poisoned and everyone starts to slowly die off. There is a group of people living far away in Alaska who have rejected this form of government and created a working society outside.
MESSAGE
The message that the creators send back is a warning about this future. To reject the universal basic income and be prepared to fight against this inevitable future. The message will be in the form of a futuristic backpack. The backpack will have a hidden LED display that will show a series of symbols that must be decoded revealing a glimpse into the future and a set of objects that present-day people will need in order to fight against their inevitable deaths.
The backpack will also contain a leaflet from the future containing a snapshot of information that the Creators are sending to each other. It will have information on meeting places etc to give people of today a glimpse into the future.

Idea 2
People in the future have proven that an afterlife exists and its the same for everybody. Neither heaven nor hell but somewhere in between. All world religions crumble
After religion falls and people no longer see the need to be good an all out war breaks out. People begin to murder and steal from one another. No one is safe. Its absolute worldwide chaos. One sanctuary city exists where a structured society is still in place isolated from the rest of the destruction. Its impossible to find unless you have a map.
MESSAGE
The message is sent from the sanctuary city in the form of a map that must be decoded. It shows people in the past the location where they will need to build this place.

Ira Glass on Storytelling
Edit out all the crap This is something that I struggle with when producing creative work. I come up with one lukewarm idea that I can’t let go of. This was a great takeaway from Ira Glass’ story telling series. Edit out the crap leaving only the very best.
Getting past the gap When I was in undergrad I experienced being in the gap. I was very much in the in-between stages of learning to paint and becoming great painter and I didn’t push through. Instead I gave up for other disciplines and I still often wonder what kind of paintings I could have produced had I pushed through the gap and actually mastered oil painting. Maybe I will never know. Luckily I have found other creative outlets that I have pursued
Be real, don’t imitate When storytelling, be yourself. This message stuck out to me. People will find your story much more compelling if your are genuine. Makes sense.
Half the work is finding the story not actually producing the work I’m finding this to be the case with the future dystopia project. I’m fixated on the object that I want to create when really I need to come up with the story/message first.

Expirementing with Sewing: Backpack II
I decided to make another backpack, this time with a plaid lining and inner laptop sleeve. Before starting this project I cut-out a pattern with heavy paper. This made cutting the pieces faster and less frustrating. With the addition of a lining the cutting out phase would be double the work so having a pattern helped greatly.

Exterior and interior pieces cutout. Lots of fabric.

Lining pieces sewn onto exterior canvas pieces

Assembling the back of the bag.

Sewing on the handle to the webbing.

Its all coming together

Bag sewn inside out.

Finished!

Finished backpack with lining and interior laptop sleeve.

Creative Process of Dieter Rams: Animatic/Video Draft
After presenting a couple of weeks ago, Gabriella and I got some great feedback that we’ve incorporated into this draft. Biggest edits were removing the beginning section where we describe what an industrial designer is. Instead we jump right into Dieter Rams’ process. Second biggest edit was removing the last section where we verbatim spell out his 10 principles of design. This has been done to death. Our revised video is much more concise, and does a better job at telling the story of his creative process.
