Friendships and being AroAce and Autistic
I’ve been thinking a lot about how the overlap of these things makes friendships so hard for me, and I’m here to vent about it lol.
Being aroace means that like. I don’t want a classic boyfriend/girlfriend/whatever. ALL I have are platonic relationships, and that means I take those relationships a lot more seriously than a lot of allo-people.
And since I’m autistic, socializing is hard and really tiring, and I honestly don’t get along with most people (not as in I fight with them, but as in, I don’t like them enough to be worth spending spoons to hang out with them longterm).
I’m really picky about potential friends. I need to click with them, and honestly, I also tend to want them to share my special interest (Pokemon), and trying to find friends in a fandom space that I, an aroace, get along with, is really hard (fandom spaces are so based on ships and how sexy characters are, it’s exhausting and I doubt people who aren’t aro or ace even notice it)
Either way, I feel like I’m realizing, more and more, people will never view friendships as important, at least not the way that I do.
Friends are just… Always going to be viewed as disposable in a way that a romantic partner isn’t. And people are never going to devote the same time and energy to a friendship.
I just feel so alienated and isolated, even when I talk to people in my fandoms. Even when they’re openly autistic, even when we have the exact same interests, it feels like we’re speaking different languages.
I don’t know. I’ve just felt isolated for years now, attending cons and trying to talk to people. I just feel so…. Separated from “normal” fandom culture.
#some of this is very relatable to me#especially that friendships are so important to me but (most) alloros just don't see it that way#friendships are secondary to people and its so tiring and makes me a little scared for the future because who's going to stick with me#aspec#autism

i really like how afamiliality can dig up so much depth and variety in the concept of family in general. in my mind, 'family' can be split into two pairs kinda like this:
blood relatives <---> non-related family
pre-existing family <---> future family (eg: bio/adopted kids, also the typical "found family" concept)
the "blood is thicker than water" phrase is pretty perfect for afamiliality and the first pair is pretty much that. im very glad that its already in discussion + how we got the red and blue afam flags, so i wont try to elaborate on it.
i havent seen much talk about the 'pre-existing/future' aspect of family, but another post mentioned not wanting to have kids as an afamilial experience and it just occurred to me that there is a distinction. everyone's gonna be different ofc, and if youve been afamilial for as long as you can remember and dont feel differently about your 'original' family and the idea of making one yourseld, then the distinction may not be important, but i think theres something to be said about it.
i think that the pre-existing vs future family distinction contextualizes family as a choice, but in a different way to the blood/water concept, and also differently to how asexuality and aromanticism presents sex and romance as a choice.
there's an opt-out aspect to family that isnt replicated in the same way in sexual and romantic relationships, mostly because (id hope) nobody is born automatically married, but the concept of family**, while just as social and cultural as marriage, is applied to a person before they even fully exist, and (for blood relatives in white cultures at least) is considered broken pretty much only when everyone else in the family is dead, or when legal action has been taken (and even then, its not always reflected socially).
** [ important note: the family someone is born into can extend beyond strictly blood relatives to the larger community, and i am including that concept of family in here. thats why past/future family is a separate distinction from blood/non-related family. ]
on the other side, a future family is something that you have to opt-in to, and in that way it is more like how aromanticism, asexuality and aplatonicism are to their corresponding relationships. its the 'opt-in' side to pre-existing family's 'opt-out'.
partially, i broke the concept of family down like this becuase my experience isnt consistent along the blood family vs non-related family distinction and not having words for it was confusing. hopefully this is useful to someone else as well, and also doesnt exclude concepts of family im not familiar with.

This massive artwork was created especially for the Independence Day of Ukraine, some may have seen it already. 🫣 This is also my explanation for the lack of new art posts lately.😅 At the heart of the composition is Domenico Fetti’s painting "David with the Head of Goliath". ___

The Associated Press (AP) reported that Israel has deemed the "displacement of Gaza’s residents inevitable," as residents were instructed to prepare to move south, with the army claiming it would provide tents and aid there. This move comes as part of preparations for a full-scale assault on Gaza City, with more than 80% of the Strip having become military zones or placed under evacuation orders.
This map shows the areas in the southern Gaza Strip where residents have been asked to relocate.
