i don't know what the duffers' home situation was when they were kids but fr they do the byers as a single-mom household SO well.

like the scene when joyce and jonathan find out that will is missing--jonathan as a good big bro is cooking breakfast but joyce is frustrated with him for not waking will up on time and then things get MORE tense when she finds out he was working for extra cash last night.

then when she calls the Wheelers you switch from this stressed out (jonathan and joyce are both standing/moving around), muted color palette scene at the byers to a slightly sunnier/colorful, "perfect" nuclear family with the wheelers. dad, bro, and sis are sitting down at the table and karen is the only one standing (presumably bc she makes the breakfast every morning.)

like the contrast is sooooo good.
