About a week late, but here's my final update on Dauntless:
Damn this was such a fun game!! And the community was truly immaculate, like *chef's kiss*.
I'm still incensed over the reset and LOCKING OF WEAPONS WE ALREADY EARNED BEHIND A CASH SHOP, and the early game was very lonely with the new matchmaking system, but I still had a blast seeing this game off. Once I got the hang of the new forms of interrupts, I got the same feelings of satisfaction from absolutely shitting on some poor behemoths. The newer behemoths also added another layer of challenge, and I LOVED the new game modes (Trials and Gauntlet).
I spent the last day of the game's tenure completing the Gauntlet with a friend I made in Ramsgate (WizLizTheChiz, pictured on the left and me on the right) and a friend they made in a previous Gauntlet run
Running around the ruins of Old Ramsgate slaying behemoths really took me back. Whoever designed those arenas did an awesome job, because I remember standing in exact places on that map even after like five years without playing it. That really speaks to how much of an impression Dauntless has left on me after all of these years as well.
In terms of achievements, I was able to get all of them but six, and all five of those were related to progression, which I would have gotten easily given enough time. (Reach lvl 60 with a weapon, spend 100 talent points across all Escalations, complete a Heroic Escalation, unlock Milestone X on the Slayer's Path, reach Mastery Slayer level 40, and do 100k total damage with the revenant omnicell. Considering how much time I put into the game before the reset, how close I was to each of these at sunset (slayer level 34, weapon level 44, and I put a hurting on behemoths with the revenant omnicell), and the fact that these achievements will forever be unattainable, I did some magic that I normally reserve for bugged achievements.... I think it's only fair
Circling back to the development side of things: there are definitely lessons to be learned from Dauntless, but none that I feel that I can really utilize currently. As a primarily text-based game developer, I just don't have the skills needed to build anything even remotely similar to Dauntless... YET. I think that a similar monster hunting game based on antibiotics and antibiotic resistance would be really cool. I'm envisioning something that's kind of a cross between a monster hunter and a creature collector/farming sim, where you have to slay the pathogens, each of which have unique weaknesses akin to real pathogens (ex: targeting peptidoglycan synthesis in gram positive bacteria vs targeting free DNA in viruses) while also mediating the damage done to your tamed creatures (AOE damage? a fear meter maybe? I'd have to workshop it)
Of course, there's always the possibility of me making a non-educational game strictly for fun, in which case I would definitely do a deeper analysis to diagnose what was done well and what I'd prefer to avoid from the many iterations of Dauntless over the years. I just doubt that will be any time soon with all of my time currently being dedicated to my children (they're growing so damn fast) and building my teaching philosophy through experience (the learning never stops).
And with that, I bid a bittersweet goodbye to Dauntless. Rest in peace, you will be remembered. Maybe there's a chance the IP falls into more capable hands one day and we'll all meet again in the Maelstrom. Until then, farewell, fellow Slayers. It was a pleasure hunting with you again, however briefly o7
Dauntless

This one isn't a new game for me. I started playing late in the closed beta and played HEAVILY during open beta.
The open beta days were peak. It had everything going for it that Monster Hunter did, but had a simplified gameplay loop and very satisfying interrupt mechanics. The community during open beta was also outstanding, both the players and devs. I streamed on Twitch at the time, usually around 10-15 viewers, sometimes more, and I had devs pop into my chat, watch me play, and ask for my opinions more than once. I've never seen that for any other game.
Then they chose to launch on Epic for full release. I get why they did it. Epic was heavily incentivising for smaller devs to launch exclusively with them to pull in new users. It was a good financial decision for them. But it killed the game. A huge part of the player base refused to deal with Epic (including me), which is what triggered the game's death spiral imo.
I stopped following it for a while, but from what I've gathered, the studio was sold to a techbro parent company that forced them to essentially burn the game to the ground and start over. Mixed opinions on if this was a last-ditch effort to save the game or a deliberate assassination... either way it was objectively a bad decision.
I saw it was released on Steam and decided to give it a go. EVERYTHING that I'd spent dozens or hundreds of hours farming (armor, weapons, cells, everything) was GONE. WTF. I still had the raw materials I had, and I still had all of the cosmetics that I'd earned or bought, but all of my endgame gear was obliterated, and I had to start over the game from scratch. To boot, they fundamentally changed the upgrade system AND how behemoths could be interrupted (my favorite part). It was miserable for the first dozen hours or so.
I cannot understand how this seemed like a good decision (granted, I have no idea what the state of the game was like when that decision was made).
Now, the game in its current state. Once I got past the frustration of "I am being beaten up by a lesser embermane when I used to nuke rezakiri from orbit", it is still an enjoyable game. The new weapon and armor system sucks, and I'm also not a fan of the slayer progression system (which I do remember being implemented either shortly before or shortly after I quit, so that's not a new feature), but its still fun to interrupt the behemoths. (They took my war pike cannon, whyyyyy did they take the war pike cannon??? It doesn't make it any harder to interrupt, it's just not as cool)
In the wake of these awful changes, the game is being sunset next month. I'm trying to get as many achievements as I can before that happens, because as unfortunate as what happened to it is, it's still one of my favorite games historically, and the open beta days were really important to me as a baby PC gamer and young adult. It would be nice to have that 100% trophy to remember it by, even if its tied to the new version and not the one I loved. We'll see how that goes! I don't expect to 100%, since I work full time and am about to have a baby, but I'll do my best.

I'm currently stuck on the main story quest that requires you to get a weapon to level 30, and I cannot emphasize enough how trash the weapon leveling system is. It feels like a gacha system where the goal is to wear down your patience and nickel and dime you to death, because it's so hard to get the aetherites that give experience. The game sunsets in like a week or two and I'm tempted to buy into the battle pass to get more. Luckily/unluckily (depending on how you look at it) they've disabled the money shop so I physically CAN'T opt into the battle pass.
Really shitty that this grindset pay2win mechanic is literally obstructing my forward progress in the game that, again, SUNSETS IN A WEEK OR TWO. I miss open beta Dauntless so damn much.

Decided to do one of those notes posts I've been seeing
20 notes - I'll try to post more often
30 notes - I'll drink more water daily
50 notes - I'll start drawing everyday
100 notes - I'll start cleaning my room everyday
150 notes - I'll start learning how to play piano
300 notes - I'll write the rest of my oc lore
500 notes - I'll fix my wretched sleep schedule
Only rule is no spamming! Let's see how many notes I can get :>
Edit: Time to get out my Ipad!!
Edit: WE REACHED ALL THE NOTE GOALS??
I should add more..
1000 notes: I'll show off my drawing progress (wasn't able to draw the first few days due to being busy and not expecting the goal to be hit so quick)
1250 notes: I'll learn a new recipe every week and actually make myself food everyday instead of just eating junk food and instant noodles
1500 notes: I'll aim to be a straight A student this year! (I'll still try my best academically, this would just be for some motivation)

Officially 100%ed, I celebrated by passing out in front of the jukebox!

Arcade Paradise

I just started this game this morning and I'm already obsessed, and I can't figure out why??? It's about running your dad's laundromat to """learn what real work is""" and you secretly run an arcade out of the back room. Literally the main mechanic of the game is figuring out how to do the least work/do work most efficiently in order to spend more time playing the arcade games. But I love it???
The arcade minigames are so cute and racing to finish a level before the dryer goes off makes it even more fun. Plus, it has the "numbers go brrr" appeal that all business simulator type games have. The character interactions/narrative is also really nice (dad is a heartless capitalist but big sis is amazing). I also enjoy the cleaning simulator aspect of it, and the little gamified overlay for menial tasks is so cute.
Ok now that I've laid it out I get why I like it so much. It's a cohesive fusion of multiple genres I love. g2g I have laundry to do

I'm drafting this post in between runs of Spacerace Simulator. I'm on my last achievement! Getting one of every color on Graffiti Run was the worst. Nothing else gave me half as much trouble as that one.
I'm really happy I played this game. I think I got it from Humble Choice? I may have never even heard of it otherwise. It's interesting how so many of my favorite games are things I happened on my chance. It's 1am so I'm not going to wax philosophical about that but there's definitely something to be said there.
My takeaways for this game are mainly related to the narrative. I was super invested in this story without realizing it until the rug gets pulled when I lost the arcade. It's very casual, genuine, and relatable. Maybe I'll try a more slice-of-life style story for my next project!
The pacing of the story alongside the growth of the arcade was also very well done and something I would like to be able to replicate in my own games.
Very proud of this 100% and looking forward to Arcade Paradise VR!

Got the DLC (worth) and up to 43/54 achievements. Most of what I have left depends on earning pounds, which I can only get my completing my 3 to-do list tasks each day. So really, I'm trying to complete the goals on as many machines as possible while doing that.

Ok so I went without updating this for a bit because I went real hard in the paint. Was maxing out machines, optimizing cabinet positioning, and slowly but surely eliminating the laundry space. I... kind of miss it? There's less pressure to race back to a game because I only have 2 min until the dryer is done. That being said, with more time to play the games I am destroying the goals and achievements.
Finished the story segment of the game yesterday. (Spoilers ahead)
I cannot describe the rage and utter defeat I felt when the laundrette arcade was snatched out from under me. It was Lesley's fault! Ash is more noble than me because I'd have thrown that bitch under the bus for sure.
The segment where your packing meat boxes while listening to the dad flashbacks killed me. The design was perfect. The ambiance of the scene. The fact that you had to focus to get it right and progress the flashbacks but focusing on *taping up fucking boxes* being so monotonous. The dad's VA killed that performance too. I almost cried.
And then walking through the laundrette on auction day??? Pure misery. I slow walked like I way touching every surface and reminiscing like an old fool. And then the message from Dylan about the investment????? Fuck me sideways that was impeccable delivery. How casual he is while Ash and I are wallowing in misery right before he saves our asses. Perfect. 10000/10. No notes.
And the last call from dad where he opens up about how disconnected his became due to his job??? And how mom said watching Ash and Lesley together was "paradise" and WE NAME THE ARCADE THAT FOR HER?????? You got me all kinds of fucked up on that.
Wonderful game. Flawless. Recommend under all circumstances. Going to study it's ludonarrative structure under a microscope.

I've started completing all the goals on some of the machines and making BANK. Honestly it's starting to not be worth it to do laundry. I wonder if/how that game mechanic gets phased out, or if you just have to let laundry pile up? I hope it gets phased out because piled up laundry will do 6d6 psychic damage to me
Currently at 13/54 achievements. Not really had to go out of my way for any yet
