What I wanna know (or wish I knew) is what the likelihood of the show coming back even is… Like I know nothing is ever a sure thing in the entertainment industry, but like are we all worried and anxious for good reason? Or are we overly stressed about something that’s not even a considered possibility?
Not knowing what the stakes are and what’s actually going on, is incredibly frustrating, even more so knowing it could be two more months (based on the fact that the renewal of season 7 was announced in June last year) before we know if the show is renewed or not.
Well, the entire production wanting to keep going no matter what they end up producing makes me think that there is a good chance for renewal. They had replacements for Diesel even before they needed them. We can't know for sure how this season was received, but a network that has smart people in charge of decision making (which is not necessarily CityTV) wouldn't consult this season's ratings because, good or bad, they are not what the show will be about moving forwards therefore they are not an indicator of audience engagement that could lead to decisions about its future. Even if the show doesn't want to continue with John Reardon, it still won't be about Sarah, Joe and Jesse passing Rex around during investigations. So the ratings don't matter, aside maybe for the first two episodes, and that even is a stretch.
If I was the network, I'd focus on two points: a) are the dogs that they have now up to the task of being Rex, and b) not making unnecessary and risky changes.
The first one for me can be answered like this: Every dog has a different personality and they can't be Diesel. But I doubt any viewer ever turned off a Rex show because they replaced the dog, if the dog was any kind of combination of cuteness and efficiency. A lot of viewers usually don't even register the change.
The second one? If anyone in this goddamn network actually understands what this show is about, they'll pressure the production to get John Reardon back, if the production is in fact the problem which I have no way of knowing. If the network is at fault and they're the ones who are envisioning a different show with a different lead and are pushing for it, I'd find that very odd.
To me, CityTV just seems like they want some Canadian content that can also bring decent ratings. They don't seem like they'd get involved in the creative process, much less interfere in a drastic way. I'm not even sure they have the power to do it, renewing or canceling the show is one thing, it's another to be able to make creative decisions. Something definitely went down between the production(s) and CityTV and the whole "We got 10 episodes, now we got 8, now we got 9, now we got 10, oops, just kidding, it's actually 8" thing and some decisions were made. I can't imagine it was pleasant and I can't imagine that it didn't bring friction. Failing to deliver the amount of episodes that you've agreed to is usually serious, but we can't be sure it went that way, they could have come to a mutual decision to shelve the remaining episodes for next season, which would make a renewal more probable.
Anyway, maybe they'll get sick of us asking and tell us sooner than June lol

Mark: Charlie can take care of himself.
Sarah: Yeah, he can.
Narrators voice: Charlie could not, in fact, take care of himself.

I think if at any point John Reardon couldn’t come back to the show, they’d just have to cancel it << That’s why I thought as well.
Like you said, the name of the show is literally Hudson & Rex. The show doesn’t work without Charlie long term. And I believe that fans would also not get behind any other character as some kind of replacement for Charlie. It’s just not possible (I mean some people are already freaking out about Mark, I do think it was unnecessary to add him on this late in the season though, because there’s only 2? 3? episodes left).
Also I while I don’t think they ever intended on starting some kind of love triangle (it’s thankfully not that kind of show), I really just would’ve wanted for Sarah to clarify that Charlie’s not just her “work partner”.
I think Mark was added to take a bit of the load off our main characters. And I think I wrote this before(?) but the reason for the production getting someone later in the season is that you can't just immediately find an actor who can work with dogs, is willing to work with dogs, is willing to travel to Newfoundland to work with dogs and is also good at it. I believe that the reason for bringing him has more to do with the fact that the rest of the actors might not always be available for as many scenes as this season demands of them, we should remember that in most of the seasons it was John Reardon and Diesel that had the most scenes. Depending on how much of the situation the cast knew before the start of filming which I can't know, it's possible they had even scheduled other acting jobs in-between the time they had estimated they had available. Also, the weight of all the action scenes for this season has so far fallen solely on the dogs. That might have been an extra factor for getting someone else. But I honestly think it had to do more with filming the episodes on time.
I give a love triangle zero percent chance of happening. There is no easier way to get the audience to hate a character than have them show any sort of feelings for another character while the character they're in a relationship with is away. Now, add to this the fact that Sarah is a woman. But I do understand why Sarah didn't say, "by the way Charlie's my boyfriend" to a man she'd just met. It was too much to say that Charlie is in Belize, really, and he didn't ask. That was more for the audience's benefit because not everyone catches every episode, so the general audience needs to be reminded of where Charlie is. Also, people who are freaking out about Mark need to chill the fuck down. It's one thing to joke about it and I certainly hope in my own posts what I've written has come off as a joke and not actual hostility towards the character or the actor (I never actually talked about the actor so I guess the character, and I don't really use gifs when I'm trying to make a serious point), and it's another to truly feel threatened by this guy.
I don't want to be dismissive of the fact that more than a hundred people are working on Hudson and Rex, by the way. I feel I should mention this, and that a cancellation would mean loss of jobs for all this cast and crew, in a region that is not famous for its filming industry, to my knowledge at least, so filming jobs must be hard to find. But I just can't find a way for a show to proceed when its named Hudson and Rex if you remove Hudson. It would require major rebranding, and even a change in title (let's assume for a moment that could work) would be of dubious success.
What most procedurals strive to do is to avoid rocking the boat. That means as few changes as possible, lest the audience don't like them and change the channel. So, I can't say with 100% certainty what their plans were in case John Reardon wasn't available, but now that he is, it makes no sense to replace him. Also, the guy is playing basketball on ice. I think he's ready to come back, if there is an eighth season.

Hudson and Rex S07E06
I don't particularly care for episodes involving bees, the X-files one was the last I probably enjoyed and it's actually a movie, but both episodes directed by Kevin Hanchard have a certain quality to them. I'd take the episode apart and talk about it directorially if I could, but I can't.
Good job on making it seem like Nancy was killed in her own apiary while we discover toward the end of the episode that she was murdered elsewhere and her body was moved. Making the scene of the murder happen in broad daylight and then the investigation happen at night intentionally misleads the audience, I certainly didn't notice those were different apiaries.
"The suit didn't offer much protection". Plus, she had taken off her gloves.
"I'm wondering if those bees haven't gotten you all screwed up". Sarah, don't test me. You're supposed to be the smart one.
Banana oil is trendy? I've never even heard of it, even though I've heard of quite a few weird ass oils lately.
We have so many small honey making businesses in Greece. I absolutely recognize the value of good honey, I love good honey, and I didn't realize how lame honey tastes in certain countries I'd visited until I'd tried it. Horrendous. My late uncle was also a beekeper so for a while we had pretty good honey at home all the time. And yet, all these things could not make me care either for the case of this episode, which focused way more on things like producing the honey and honey-making business, or the 911 bee episode this season. Someone might wonder, "Why, after so many cases, you need the case of the week to draw you in?" (my sister says it all the time). Well, it's kind of a big part of each episode. Still, crime shows fail at making the case intriguing quite often, it's not just Hudson and Rex. Would it have been better if Charlie was there? Strictly speaking about the case, I don't think so.
Sarah puts honey in her coffee? In her Pumpkin Spiced Latte? I'm kidding about the latte but I've tried honey in my coffee and it's... eek.
I wonder how much those CGI bees cost.
The plot with Jack and Charlie thickens.

Had to google Belize to get a geographical sense of the story. Also found out that the official language of Belize is English, apparently.
MacBook Air product placement.
Nancy's ex is such an idiot. But also very unlucky.
Killed by a rock that says "bee nice". I like the irony.
Dude, I don't care if I'm allergic or not, I don't go near an active apiary without a suit. Also, Joe whump!
Tumblr media
This is so cute. Also, more suits for Rex! I don't know why it needs to be said that dogs look cute dressed in things. Come on, show.
Headcanon that Sarah sent a picture to Charlie which he will receive whenever he restores his phone (I already have it for granted that something happened to it).
Okay, if I knew I was allergic then I'd definitely not plan to be anywhere near bees. I don't know what the hell Joe is thinking at the end of the episode.
I wish they'd gotten Kevin Hanchard to direct a more meaningful episode.
Promo: Hopefully we get some catchy tunes from Jesse. Also, Jesse whump! I have read the title of this episode as "Kiss the Cook and Make Them Die" twice. To be fair, it makes more sense than kissing a fish and the fish kissing ceremony sounds gross. Oh, and I hope Jesse gets some *wink wink*

Forever in our heart 🥺 🐾
It is with deep sorrow that we share the news that Diesel, who played our beloved Rex, has departed. We could not have had a better dog agent!
The series will continue to honor his legacy, his nephews will take on his role, ensuring that the magic and loyalty of our beloved Rex are still alive in every episode.
