Endless Forms Most Beautiful
XVII: Columbidae
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adjacent to the Mirandornithes, the second branch of the 3 way basal Neoavian polytomy is Columbimorphae. There are 3 families in this clade, the first of which is Columbidae: the doves and pigeons. There are an impressive 344 living species in this family with a cosmopolitan distribution. Pictured are the pink-headed fruit dove (Ptilinopus porphyreus) and the spotted dove (Spilopelia chinesis).
Pigeons are perhaps the most familiar birds to people across the world; not only does this family naturally live everywhere that humans do, but descendants of feral rock doves have been introduced to most parts of the world, where they are commonly known as "city pigeons". In general, doves have small heads and beaks, short legs, and large broad wings. Combined with their powerful flight muscles, these birds are rather strong fliers. Unusually among birds, doves are able to drink using suction (like us humans), rather than having to scoop water and tip their heads back like most other birds.

Doves are generally herbivores, with some species preferring fruit while others opt for seeds. The young are altricial, but grow faster than most other birds thanks to a diet of cropmilk produced by the parents (most likely independently evolved from that seen in flamingos).
