In some cases the antibodies in the human body attack the proteins created by gene therapy that are necessary for blood clotting. Shown here in black, antibodies circle around the proteins blocking them from attaching to cells. New drugs are now in production to mimic the effect of these proteins without the antibodies recognising them as a threat.

Gene therapies for haemophilia use viruses to deliver genes to human cells. In this illustration the Adeno-associated Viruses carrying modified genes enter cells through the process of endocytosis whereby the cell membrane envelops them to let them in the cytoplasm and eventually to the cell nucleus where the modified genes can replace defective genes in the DNA.

Riley plans his paintings, but along the way he wrangles the accidents and mistakes that are inevitable. He cannot say what it is that tips a painting in one direction or the other. It's just apparent to him when something is done. The process is a living thing that's of the moment.

Although seemingly these masks tell stories, this again started out as a material experiment. I wanted to find out if by stitching a rope together I could make a large flat carpet. Instead of flat, the samples got curvy. When I was about to give up on the carpet, Vladi came up with the idea of shaping the rope into masks. The possibilities are endless, I’m meeting new faces every day.
