18-year-old Light Yagami decides this as he faces down yet another horde of evil monsters set on drowning the world in infinite darkness. Or something. Honestly, he kind of lost the plot long ago. The only reason he’s even bothering to give a damn after repeated injury and ridicule and overall just self destruction is that the evil sorcerer Keyron managed to kidnap his sister in one of his evil deeds.

Lawlight angst

Coexistence is boredom - very plot driven, angst (but also super fun in some parts), slowburn, enemies with benefits to lovers, incomplete (still worth reading though !)

Silence - L has Light sentenced to life in an asylum for the criminally insane, which was a terrible mistake. Angst with a happy ending (you will cry), Matt/Mello, Near and B/Light make a cameo. I defend this as the best Lawlight fic I have ever read.

Asylum - the prequel to silence. Includes angst, horror and torture. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I read this

"Exhausted"

500 words challenge. rated G. slight lawlight. set in the yotsuba arc.

Light has been acting strange. Well—strange in the way L notices, and not in his Kiraless way that began during his confinement. No, this is just subtle enough that only L notices it. It’s the way Light’s voice has less emotion when otherwise it’s consistently invigorated, it’s the slight hunch that changes the way he sleeps, and the slight shifting of his eyes as if always on edge.

The evidence is clear.

Light is exhausted. Granted, anyone would be, but the fact of the matter is that he has pushed himself too far and is reaping the consequences. And Light, ever enthusiastic to prove his current, if not actual innocence, ignores this fact to further his goal. For someone who complains so much about L’s negative habits, Light doesn’t seem to care much about his own. Thus, the duty lies solely on L.

“Light,” L prods him.

“Ryuzaki, I am trying to sleep,” Light complains.

“Light will sleep as long as he wants. He should turn off his alarm.”

That gets Light to sit up, giving L a dubious look. When L gives him an expectant look back, he slowly reaches over to the nightstand, grabbing the alarm and disabling it. He sets it down with a final plonk.

“Ryuzaki, what’s this about?”

“Light is exhausted,” L states.

Light gives him an affronted look at that.

“He has gone through multiple emotionally draining periods due to being a suspect, and has not had a chance to cope with the trauma,” L continues. “Furthermore, he is by my side at all times for surveillance, despite my being the cause of the aforementioned trauma. He consistently pushes himself, in what can only be a desperate bid for proof that he is innocent, while consistently tortured by night terrors and on edge from paranoia. All without any rest.”

The affronted look doubles, but something behind it relaxes, almost as if it was glad to be seen. Curious.

“Light has not relented in his efforts to improve my health. I figure it is best to return the favor.”

They meet each other’s gazes in a staring match of sorts. For a moment, L believes Light will protest, find some reason that he is perfectly fine and then shut down any further interrogation. Yet, uncharacteristically, he relents.

“You’re right, Ryuzaki. I haven’t had a break in ages. I appreciate your efforts to give me one,” Light pauses, then sighs. “I suppose the case isn’t making any headway regardless if we are there or not for a day.”

“So Light will take a break?”

“Yes, Ryuzaki, I’ll take a break. Now let me sleep.”

With that, Light buries himself in the blankets of their shared bed. L spares a glance at the computer screen, debating attempting to squeeze a night’s worth of work out. Light exhales a soft breath, and L turns to look at him. With a clack, he shuts the computer, and sets it off to the side. He could use a break, too.

1. into the hellfire, forged in steel

If real life were fiction, the end of the case would be the end of it all. People would go back to life as it was, once the villain was defeated. No longer would tyranny threaten the livelihoods of thousands of people, threaten the happiness of thousands more. It was supposed to be the end of it.

But this is real life. And Kira was no ordinary villain.

People were comforted by his justice, finding solace and safety within it. Kira’s methods had garnered so much support, that even in such a short time, people began to rally behind it.

Contrary to popular belief, or hope, L won the war. He remembers the day clearly, as the shreds of Light’s dignity were torn apart and laid bare. The last time L had seen Light was as Watari bound him in handcuffs, lying down on the floor.

2. The 5 Love Languages Didn’t Prepare Me For This

The room fills with the white wash of a max brightness PC screen. Light slowly shifts in the covers, squinting his eyes shut at the intensity of it. Then he remembers where he is, and his plan slots into place: don’t move, even breaths. Months of a tight schedule has been great for his mental stimulation, but terrible for his sleep schedule. Maybe, today, he’ll be able to finally get a few extra minutes of peaceful rest before he’s inevitably torn away from the warmth of the sheets.

“Good morning, Light.”

Damn it.

He shifts, putting up a meaningless show of just rousing—slowly lifting up into a careful upper body stretch, before brushing a hand against his eyes to check for any crust.

“Good morning, L.”

3. Murderous Eyes and Blind Detectives

A gust of wind rushes through the Channel, up the Laines and sweeps around the tight streets of Brighton. Winter is making its home in the city, and Detective Theodore Evans is late. He stumbles through the crowds of people, wading and waiting to and from buses. He was supposed to be in charge of picking up whatever mysterious representative L had sent as they arrived from the London-Brighton express line train. However, an unfortunately time meeting with a different supervisor had caused him to leave the precinct much later than planned, and left him stumbling in at a rough 15-after-2.

The Express line pulls in just as he enters the main station building. Theo sighs in relief, thanking the notoriety of the train line delays. He begins confidently striding towards the ticket gates, when a voice appears behind him.

“Mr. Evans? You’re late.”

4. And the Wheels Keep Turning

“Thank you for riding this train. This is a Marunouchi Line train bound for Ikebukuro. This train is going to Ginza, Tokyo, and Otemachi.”

There’s something about Tokyo at night. Beautiful in theory, depressing in practice. The skies are always gray. There’s 1 million twinkling lights. But these lights aren’t stars—they’re streetlights, screens, and neon signs. People still bustle about even in the late night. The rail system never seems to relent in its cacophony of noises.

5. Death is Life is Death

When Near solved the Kira case, he never once fooled himself into thinking that’d be the end of it. Shinigami could get bored anytime, drop their notebooks at any time. It’s highly likely Near would see another Kira by the end of his lifetime, however long that may be. If he were a romantic, Near would say the battle of Kira and L would become an event carrying on past lifetimes, written into the stars.

However, Near is not a romantic. In fact, he’s quite the opposite. He could care less about the return of Kira, unless his opponent was anywhere worth it. It was a mindset he respected of L’s, one of the few ones he’s willing to keep with his transition into the role.

Would he be willing to encounter Kira once more? Yes. If they’re worth it.

6. In the Absence of Everything

Light Yagami opens his eyes, trying to blink away the fog covering them. Once he gains some level of clarity, he shifts his gaze around. The room is dark; no lights nor windows allow for any light to come in. He can barely see but he thinks he can make out a single door, solid metal. He doesn’t know where he is, but he has an inclination that L is behind it.

7. The Stars You Bleed For Me

The Skeld. A multipurpose explorer ship designed to collect data on the farther reaches of space. The crew, a loyal bunch decorated in multicolored spacesuits, seemed entirely unaware of the space their aging vehicle had breached.

Well, Light couldn’t be too bothered. He got a decent meat suit out of the arrangement, topped with a red colored spacesuit to boot. Light always was partial to infrared; this color is a suitable replacement.

Light opened his eyes to the ship’s cafeteria, observing the inside at last. It was a mediocre arrangement, with circle benches in gray-blue that were painful to sit on and were covered in grease stains. Along the walls were several locations where various members could complete menial tasks.
