CAS - FINAL POST - PART 3/3 - final reflection on CAS experience
I perceive the eighteen months of the CAS programme as a unique opportunity to develop myself as a student, but most importantly as a human. It allowed me to help organisations, such as the Committe for the Protection of the Children's Rights, or the POLIN Museum of the History of the Polish Jews, which both have a higher goal of either solving a major societal issue, or informing the inhabitants of Poland, especially those living in Warsaw about the often forgotten past. CAS allowed me to obtain several practical assets such as management skills, knowledge of the history of my homeland, and also numerous relations with people, who I had the honour to cooperate with. I believe that the biggest difficulty, that I have encountered throughout this programme, was to find sufficient time for external activities, apart from the participation in the International Baccalaureate DP. Yet, I have managed to find enough time to perform numerous activities related to Creativity, Activity, as well, as Service. CAS also turned out to be extremely beneficial while I applied for various universities, as I mentioned several CAS-related activities in my CVs, Motiviational letters, or in the UCAS personal statement. At this point, I it stucked me how the aforementioned programme changed me as a person; I suddenly realised how much I have managed to do, and how knowledge and abilities, I was able to acquire over the past eighteen months in various extracuricular activities. I also realised how my well-being improved, as a result of regular excercise in the framework of the Activity part of the course. Thanks to CAS, I also was able to participate in an abundance of unforgettable events such as the medal ceremony of the Righteous Amongst the Nations, where I could personally award people for their heroism in the toughest times. Therefore, I consider CAS to be a important aspect of my upper-secondaary school education, and always reminisce about it in a postiive light.

While working voluntairily in the Commitee for Protection of the Children's Rights, I had to learn how to be sensitive while working with children who were helped by this institution. This required me to be very careful of the choice of words, but also the way I behaved in order to make children feel safe.

"BEIRUT" - FILM REVIEW
Until now, none of the films reviewed on this blog took place in the Middle East. "Beirut" - the film named after the Lebanese capital will put that statistic to an end.
The film welcomes the audience with magnificent archival recordings from the lives of the Lebanese in the 1960s and 1970s: the legacy of the French colonial past embedded in the country's cafe culture mixed with American ambience: luxurious cars and people drinking Coca Cola everywhere. This intro itself would be sufficient to receive a good note.
Nevertheless, things undergo rapid transition in the next few minutes. Suddenly, we are in the 1980s, in a country that is torn apart by ongoing warfare between local religious groups. Mason Skiles (Jon Hamm), an alcoholic, is persuaded to return to Beirut, where he once used to reside and work, in order to act as the negotiator with Hezbollah which took a U.S. citizen into captivity.
The theme of alcoholism is portayed very realistically in this film. It does not romanticise a severe addiction like some films unfortunately tend to do. Instead it brutally portrays the destructive effect it had on the life of the central character, and the serious difficulty of overcoming it.
Rating: 6/10 - Wonderful vintage recordings of Beirut at the beginnig of the film, as well, as a mature appoach towards the issue of alcoholism deserves credit. The rest is enjoyable, but not necessairly outstanding.

"DOG DAY AFTERNOON" - FILM REVIEW
Truly peculiar... I do not recall any Al Pacino films being reviewed hitherto on this CAS Blog. Well the high time has come!
Not many bank heist-themed films show a story of a complete failure. Usually, as in the case of movies such as "Baby Driver" the tale told is a successful ones, where the robbers manage to escape despite a major police pursuit, owing to their meticulous plan. Well this is certainly not the case in "Dog Day Afternoon", where we, as the viewers, can almost feel empathy for the robbers, who clearly are not the right people to right the bank. They had a plan, but it failed almost immediately, and therefore the majority of the screentime focuses on the dialogue between the robbers, who hold hostages, and the police officers, who, surprisingly, are even worse at their job than the thieves.
The character amazingly played by Al Pacino - Sonny Wortzik has a moral dillema. We can see that he is a good man in a bad situation, unlike his mentally unstable partner in crime, who seriously considers shooting some of the hostages. Sonny tries to come up with the best possible solution in this lose-lose situation. But will he be successful at it? You have to watch it yourselves to find out!
Rating: 8/10 - I always enjoy a film that has the capacity of turning a classic-Hollywood scenario into something yet unseen. I can assure you all that "Dog Day Afternoon" is a textbook-example of such an occurence.

7.01.2021 - “MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN” - FILM REVIEW
When a film stars undeniable, yet often under appreciated such as Edward Norton, Alec Baldwin, Willem Dafoe, or Bruce Willis it, straightforwadly speaking, cannot turn out be a bad one.
“Motherless Brooklyn” is by no means an exception to this unspoken rule. This film which depicts the reality of the New York City in the late 1950s unveils a gripping plot which revolves around the secrets of the aforesaid metropolis.
What is particularly interesting in this film, is the focus on the mental condition of the main character - Lionel Essrog (played by Edward Norton, who, as always, did not disappoint to say the least). It appears that playing either psychologically ill people, or heroes with some sort of split personality truly has become his speciality. In this case, he personated a man, who suffers from Tourette syndrome, which on the one hand, makes it difficult for him to function in the society, as his twitches make other people perceive him as a freak. On the other hand, however, his condtion makes him an excellent detective: his astonishing memory is linked with his serious condition.
Furthermore, music is an aspect of this film that cannot be ommitted in a review. Jazz tunes perfectly suited the atmosphere of the NYC from this period, and were successful in dynamising the action.
Willem Dafoe and Alec Baldwin also did not disenchant, me as the viewer. Dafoe turned into a obsessional engineer, who wanted to redesign the city from scratch. Baldwin became Moses Randolph- a megalomaniacal estate owner, who wished to reshape the city, notwithstanding the objections from the local African-American community.
Yet, nothing can be regarded as perfect. Unfortunely, Bruce Willis's appearence in this film was merely... bland. To be honest, I have forgotten that he was present in this film. But, this is the only major drawback, at least in my humble opinion.
Rating: 7/10 - Artistic deptiction of mental condition is a tough task, yet this film seems to have accomplished it in a brilliant way. Nevertheless, too much cinema-stars in the cast resulted in some of them simply disappearing.

“CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY” - FILM REVIEW
Since it is the Christmas season, and one cannot be entirely submerged in IB workload, I have decided to watch one of the great Christmas classics.
There are very few such long-lasting friendships between an actor and a director in Hollywood. This is what makes the bond between John Depp and Tim Burton so special.
Even though it is a kid’s movie, Depp’s acting is spot on. No man in the enitre world can play quirky, emotional characters better than him.
What I also admire about this film is the good balance between the applied and conputer effects. Of course, there are some parts of the film when the use of green screen technology is over the top, but it was 2005 back then. Yet there are some parts of the film, in which the balance between them is maintained, and hence a convincing-looking final effect has been acquired.
Rating: 9/10 - one of the best moden Christmas clasics. Depp’s performance in this film is largely underestimated, and I hope this changes some day!
